Gen Z prefers burial over cremation, reversing decades of preferences PR NEWSWIRE
A first-of-its-kind survey conducted by the National Funeral Directors Association offers definitive data to show how Gen Z thinks differently about end-of-life matters for themselves and their loved ones — as well as similarities with older generations. Notable differences between the generations highlight Gen Z’s unique perspective, even compared to millennials who are the closest in age, highlighting a pivot in end-of-life preferences to come: • Final form of disposition: Over the past several years, the U.S. cremation rate has increased steadily (60.5% in 2023), and the trend is forecasted to grow to 81.4% by 2045 (Source: NFDA 2023 Cremation and Burial Report). While cremation is still a top preference for baby boomers (66%), Gen X (50%) and millennials (42%), Gen Z stands alone with traditional burial as their top preference (37%).
• Talking about death: Nine in 10 (91%) Americans believe talking about death and dying is healthy and normal. However, among the four generations, Gen Z (18%) is significantly more likely than older adults to disagree, believing it is not healthy and normal — bucking the generation’s reputation as willing to discuss difficult topics. “As consumer preferences evolve, funeral directors are tasked with ensuring the services and support they provide evolve right alongside them,” said Dutch Nie, president of the National Funeral Directors Association. “We know Gen Z is both community-minded and interested in breaking cultural norms. This creates an opportunity for us to showcase the value of funerals and options available to create a truly custom service that honors the life of a loved one.’”
Other notable survey insights include: • Importance of funerals: Sixty-eight percent of Gen Z strongly agree it is important to commemorate the life of a loved one with a funeral or memorial service compared to 44% of baby boomers. • Role of funeral director: While many U.S. adults have positive opinions about funeral directors, younger generations including Gen Z and millennials are even more likely than baby boomers to think of funeral directors as important, valuable experts in relevant products and services and trustworthy. • Comfort with death: Two in three adults (69%) are very or somewhat comfortable thinking about their own eventual death and seven in 10 (73%) are very or somewhat comfortable talking with others about death. More baby boomers (33%) are very
comfortable thinking about their immortality than Gen Z (24%) and millennials (28%), while millennials (71%), Gen X (72%), and baby boomers (77%) are more comfortable than Gen Z (63%) when talking about death. NFDA’s survey not only revealed new generational trends and end-of-life preferences, but also highlighted a need for all generations to find healthy ways to discuss death and their plans with friends and family. Methodology This survey was conducted by Bridge Market Research LLC in May 2024 on behalf of the National Funeral Directors Association. It includes a representative sample of 2,000 U.S. adults age 18+. Results have a margin of error +/- 2.2% at the 95% confidence level. ❦

Nearly 60% of Americans either do not have insurance coverage or are unsure if they do BUSINESS WIRE
According to new research from Corebridge Financial, many Americans have a good understanding of key life insurance principles, yet nearly six in 10 either do not have coverage (50%) or do not know if they do (9%). Misunderstandings around cost could help explain this life insurance coverage gap. While eight in 10 (80%) Americans correctly recognize that the most affordable time to buy life insurance is when they are young and healthy, the number one reason keeping individuals from buying life insurance is cost, with nearly half (45%) of those who do not have coverage saying cost was a reason for why they have not yet purchased a life insurance policy. At the same time, many Americans do
not appear to have a clear picture of the affordability of life insurance. Only about one in 10 (11%) could correctly identify the approximate monthly cost for a healthy 30-year-old to get a 20-year $250,000 term life insurance policy. The price for this example policy is typically around $15 per month, but 16% expect the price to be more than triple this amount, another 16% expect it to be more than double, and 41% are not sure. “Life insurance is a cornerstone for a secure financial plan, but misperceptions around cost deter too many people from making this important protection a part of their overall strategy,” said Tim Heslin, president of life insurance at Corebridge Financial. “Regardless of your stage in life — whether
12 | In Loving Memory | Sunday, October 20, 2024
you’re getting married, starting a family, sending a child off to college, or preparing for retirement — it’s important to evaluate your life insurance needs so you can help protect your loved ones and help secure your financial future.” Life insurance runs in the family One key determinant of whether someone has life insurance is if those they love are insured. This is particularly true for individuals whose spouse has a life insurance policy and for those listed as a beneficiary on a life insurance policy. Nearly half (49%) of those whose spouse has a life insurance policy have purchased their own coverage, compared to just 10% of those whose
spouse does not have a life insurance policy. Similarly, 43% of respondents who are listed as a beneficiary on someone else’s policy have purchased their own coverage, compared to 15% of those who are not. Testing well on life insurance basics The new Corebridge Life Insurance Insights & Awareness research identifies where Americans have a strong understanding of important life insurance concepts. When presented with a series of true or false questions, most respondents answered questions about the following correctly: • Converting term life insurance to permanent life insurance — Seventytwo percent correctly answered that
a term life insurance policy can be converted to a permanent one before the end of the policy. Converting term life insurance to a type of permanent insurance is relatively easy and does not typically require a medical exam, even if your health has declined. • Living benefits — Seventy-two percent correctly answered that life insurance can provide benefits while you are living. Permanent life insurance policies can offer features that may create a lifetime income stream, give you tax-free access to available cash value, or help you financially deal with life’s challenges. • Leaving a legacy — Seventyone percent correctly answered that life insurance can be used to leave a donation to charity. While many will name their loved ones as beneficiaries, other options include using your policy’s death benefit to honor your school, give to a hospital important to your family, or help another cause you are passionate about. Room to learn about different types of life insurance While Corebridge Life Insurance Insights & Awareness finds the most prevalent misunderstanding about life insurance is overestimating cost, the new research also reveals that Americans have an opportunity to learn more about the differences between term life insurance and permanent life insurance, and the specific benefits that these different types of coverage can provide: • Death benefit amount is not always fixed — Sixty-one percent incorrectly answered that the payout at death for all life insurance was fixed at time of purchase and does not change. While term life insurance policies generally set a fixed level for the death benefit, for many permanent policies the death benefit can change over time, as a result of policy owner choices. For instance, individuals with a permanent life insurance policy will see their death benefit change if they take out additional coverage, or if they make withdrawals or use policy loans from the cash value to help meet other financial goals or needs. • Permanent policies can build cash value, not term — Sixty percent incorrectly answered that term life insurance allows the policyholder to build cash value. This feature is available with permanent life insurance,
where a portion of the premium may go toward building cash value that can grow over time as you earn interest and make premium payments. • Premiums are level for term but not always for permanent life insurance — Forty-nine percent incorrectly answered that premiums increase every year with most term life insurance policies. In most cases, premiums do not change across the term period of such a policy; however, certain permanent policies such as universal life insurance have flexible premiums that allow the policyholder to pay more or less, depending on, for example, their goals for growing the cash value of the policy, premiums increasing as they age, or whether the cash value has grown enough to partially or fully pay for the policy. “When people think about life insurance, it’s the protection that life insurance provides for loved ones that typically first comes to mind, and rightly so,” said Heslin. “Permanent life insurance can offer a broad range of benefits that go beyond passing money down to your beneficiaries. Meeting with a financial professional or insurance agent is a smart first step to help you understand the nuances between different types of coverage so you can select a policy that fits your needs and can become foundational to your financial plan.” When asked to consider which life insurance benefits are important for their overall financial plan, Americans found value in both the death benefit as well as the additional living benefits that permanent life insurance features. Nearly six in 10 (58%) said leaving money to their loved ones when they die so they can maintain their lifestyle would be an important part of their financial planning. Further, 71% of respondents cited one or more of permanent life insurance’s several living benefits as valuable to their financial plan, such as access to the cash value of life insurance, help in providing a supplementary retirement income stream, or help in financially dealing with life’s challenges. Methodology The 2024 Corebridge Life Insurance Insights & Awareness survey was conducted online by Morning Consult on behalf of Corebridge Financial June 18–20, among a national sample of 2,204 adults. ❦

SURVEY:
Americans deeply unaware of the costs, timeline, emotional toll of probate PR NEWSWIRE
Trust & Will, the leading digital estate planning and settlement platform in the U.S., recently released the findings of “The State of Probate in America,” a groundbreaking study that unveils a startling lack of awareness surrounding the probate process among millions of Americans. Probate, the legal procedure for estate settlement, remains shrouded in misunderstanding and fear. Despite its significance, only 65% of Americans understand its definition, while 19% remain uncertain. The study reveals a significant gap in understanding, with 35% admitting to not comprehending the process at all. The study findings underscore the urgent need for heightened awareness and preparation in estate planning. Key findings from Trust & Will’s 2024 Probate Study include: • Underestimation of probate process: Most Americans vastly underestimate the duration and costs associated with probate. Despite the average timeline of 20 months, only 2% of respondents believed it would take that long, while 37% were uncertain of the timeline. Similarly, 56% have no idea about the costs involved, with 10% expecting it to be $1,000 or less, and only 4% anticipating costs to exceed $10,000. • Perception of difficulty: Over half (52%) perceive probate as somewhat
or very difficult, emphasizing the emotional and procedural complexities involved. Despite this, only 40% believe they have a strong understanding of the process. • Need for guidance: Most Americans (40%), even with their general lack of knowledge about probate, said that it will be “somewhat difficult” to manage the probate process. A staggering 65% of Americans would seek help from a probate attorney, highlighting the reliance on professional assistance during the complex process. Americans are blissfully unaware of the cost of the probate process Despite its inevitability for many, probate’s costs and duration are widely underestimated. Nearly half of Americans are unaware of the costs, with 56% having no idea of the financial implications. Furthermore, the average timeline of 20 months is drastically underestimated, with most respondents believing it to be significantly shorter. Americans vastly underestimate the financial costs of probate. More than half (56%) have no idea what it costs; 10% believe it will be $1,000 or less, and only 4% believe it will cost more than $10,000. It is commonly estimated that probate costs average 3-7% of the total value of the estate, so an estate

valued at $750,000 could incur probate fees ranging from $22,500-$52,500. Most Americans are more optimistic than realistic about timelines: 15% of people believe it will take just 1-3 months, and another 15% think 4-6 months is the average timeframe. Twelve percent believe an estate can be wrapped up in 10-12 months. The majority, 37%, say they are not sure what the probate timeline will be. Probate will greatly delay the “Great Wealth Transfer” Experts and economists are predicting the “Great Wealth Transfer,” one of the largest transfers of assets from owners to inheritors in modern history, with an estimated $72.6 trillion expected to transfer between generations. But most people are unprepared — Trust & Will’s 2024 Millennial Study found that 62% of millennials do not have a will or trust and 34% do not know if their parents have an estate plan. Probate is a process that can be avoided with proper estate planning. Without the existence of a solid estate plan, probate is dictated by location, and many people are not aware of whether they would have to go through the process. Half (50%) of Americans have no idea if they live in a state or county that requires probate to settle an estate.
“As the United States stands on the brink of the largest intergenerational wealth transfer in history, our latest study reveals a concerning lack of preparedness among Americans regarding the probate process,” said Cody Barbo, founder and CEO of Trust & Will. “For most Americans, the inheritance process is far from easy — and the lengthy and costly probate process can make it even more difficult, especially as people are grieving the loss of a loved one. Amidst an aging population that isn’t fully prepared for end-of-life via estate planning, millions of Americans will be plunged into the long, expensive, and emotionally draining process of probate. We hope to shed light on this topic and make it less taboo, while also providing resources and education to ensure a smoother transition of assets.” Visit trustandwill.com/documents/ probate-study-2024 to see the full results. Methodology Trust & Will worked with OnePoll to survey a representative sample of 1,000 Americans aged 18 and older. This survey was conducted from March 13-18. Estimates made by estate planning attorneys and CFPs who have written extensively on the topic, including Chris Nudo, Margarita Cheng and Philip B. Shane, a professor at College of William & Mary – Raymond A. Mason School of Business. ❦
Compassion is an integral component of palliative care METRO SERVICES
Various medical and therapeutic treatments are designed to promote health and well-being. Many of these therapies attempt to remove illness or address sickness. But at some point in their lives, people may receive a different form of care known as palliative care. Palliative care, according to Get Palliative Care, is based on the needs of the patient and not the patient’s prognosis. Unlike curative treatments that aim to eliminate illness, palliative care is centered on improving quality of life for patients and their families by addressing physical, emotional and psychological needs. Palliative care focuses on comfort, care and quality of life for those with serious illness. It is designed to improve life for people of any age who need it, not just older adults. The National Institute on Aging says palliative care is interdisciplinary, which means it involves a variety of doctors and care providers who work together with patients and families to address individual goals and values. Palliative care prioritizes comfort and support, aiming to alleviate pain, manage symptoms and offer holistic care that
encompasses the whole person. Some of the hallmarks of palliative care are relief from pain and other symptoms of a serious illness. It also may help a person cope with side effects of medical treatments. Palliative care may be recommended whether a condition can be cured or not. It is performed alongside other treatments a person may be receiving, says the Mayo Clinic. Patients with serious illnesses often experience pain, nausea, fatigue, and shortness of breath. Palliative care specialists utilize strategies and medications to alleviate these symptoms, ensuring that patients remain as comfortable as possible. Some of the conditions for which palliative care can be effective include: • Cancer • Heart disease • Blood and bone marrow disorders • Dementia • Cystic fibrosis • Kidney failure • Lung disease • Liver disease • Stroke
Celebrations
According to a study published in the New England Journal of Medicine, patients with who received palliative care lived longer than those who did not receive this care. By focusing on relief and support, palliative care helps individuals and their families confront challenging times.
Those who would like to inquire about palliative care for themselves or a loved one can search the Palliative Care Provider Directory to find options nearby. A conversation with one’s doctor also can point patients in the direction of palliative care. ❦
