LONDON DESIGN FESTIVAL
TIME:

PAGES: 1 ........................................................... Welcome design folk to issue No.1 of my trend magazine Spring / Summer / Autumn / Winter Collections featuring the significant designs and trends showcased at the 10th London Design Festival. The London Design Festival firmly clarified the unrivalled influence the city holds on the design world. Over 70 events took place from Shoreditch to Mayfair with visitor numbers exceeding 110,000 making this the biggest show to date. Design folk appeared in party spirit as they queued, blagged and jostled to gain unprecedented entry into the wonderful world of design delivered by the innovative show teams. William Knight led 100% Design team to successfully relaunch the pioneering show in spectacular style at Earls Court, whilst Design Junction and Tent presented excellent events in gritty industrial venues. Fuelled by my passion for design I travelled back and forth across the capital scouring the collections to discover, curate and present only relevant designs to the design devotees. I am proud and excited to introduce this labour of love I created from concept to Issue 1. Discover the design highlights you should not have missed from the shows you must visit next year. Claire Phillips-Stanford

INTRODUCING:
1. RODRIGO BRAVO 2. PLANT & MOSS
Name: Rodrigo Bravo Company: Bravo! Title: Creative Director Location: Santiago, Chile Style: Modern Craft
Where are you from? Santiago, Chile Where did you study? I studied Industrial Design at UDP, here in Santiago. Where do you find most inspiration for your designs? I mainly find references and influences from everyday life and Chilean craftsmanship. What are your strengths and weaknesses? Our strengths would be to creatively develop good design with small and simple processes. The weakness would be working so far away. Which is your favourite product you have designed? La Familia containers, because of them I’ve found a new field on copper exploration. Another favorite is the Domínica Chair, because it’s so light and slender. Which product stopped you in your tracks at London Design Festival? Collections from Benjamin Hubert, John Galvin and Miranda Watkins at
Design Junction. What has been the highlight so far of your career? I would say presenting work at the big shows such as Milan and LDF. Also having my products exhibited at galleries alongside guys like Phill Cuttance or Jolan Van der Wiel. What was the highlight of London Design Festival? Definitely how La Familia and Nidos received so much press attention! What was the last interior product you bought? A collection of antique Danish coloured bottles. Do you have a top tip for young designers? Don’t focus on other designers, pay attention to your local surroundings. Who would you like to go the pub with? I think that going out with Charlie Sheen might be fun. Will you sum up LDF in 3 words? Diverse, young and loose. www.springsummerautumnwinter.co.uk

James Plant & James Moss Company: Plant & Moss Title: Founders Location: Birmingham Style: Modern / Classic Mix
Where are you from? We are based in the Jewellery Quarter, Birmingham. The region has a long heritage with manufacturing which proves useful and we believe gives us an advantage. Where did you study? We both graduated from Buckinghamshire New University, in High Wycombe. The UK’s home of chair making. Who has been your biggest influence? It’s hard to pin-point just one person but for myself (James Plant), I would have to say key figures were my tutors who would always challenge me, this made me more determined and tenacious. Which is your favourite product you have designed? Our new Bistro Range is a favorite of mine, I think it has the potential to become a classic design, elegant yet utilitarian-it has a level of understated style. Prior to that it was Original Clamp Lamp. Which product stopped you in your tracks at 100% Design? I thought that the Emerging Brands aisle, that we were a part of, really gave a great entrance to the show. The level of quality of work from some very young brands really shows some hot competition and future promise. What has been the highlight so far of your career? Having our work selected to be displayed at Lancaster House during the Olympics, as a representation of Great British design for the ‘Great’ campaign was a warming accolade of our efforts. What was your highlight of London Design Festival? The relaunch of 100% Design which brought a new side to the show. One that is serious about design and another that wants to attract emerging design to sit alongside the big design names we all know and love. What was the last interior products you bought? The last interior product I brought was an Anglepoise Apex 90, I saw it at a second-hand shop and decided it looked worth of a new home. Do you have a top tip for up and coming designers? I would say take as much advice as you can get, ask lots of questions and gain some simple business sense. Who would you like to go the pub with? In the design world it would have to have been Achille Castiglioni. His designs are fun, happy and hopefully give pleasure to the people.using them. We hope to achieve this at Plant & Moss.
