CERAMICS WORKSHOP

“IT DOESN´T HAVE TO STAY ROUND”

NEW!

Demonstrations will include on- and off-wheel fluting and faceting, square and oval forms (including lids), darting, and stamping as pathways to created works that reflect the hand of the maker rather than the limits of the forming tool (the potter´s wheel). Forms and functions based on tea bowls, lidded jars, pitchers, and teapots will be included in the sharing. While the base forms will start on the wheel, options for hand builders will be a major part of the dialog. CREATIVE DESIGN IN GRISAILLE with NANCY HONEA

NEW!

You can create powerful artwork by developing essential design skills in this 3-day Intensive Workshop with Nancy. A strong design is the first stage of any successful painting. By mastering your intuitive design process with solid technique you will take your vision to the next level. This process applies to designing any genre: portrait, figure, landscape, or still life. We cultivate MAPPING SKILLS to enhance your perception and the ability to organize complexity into simple shapes used to design a composition. In the next stage we develop your DESIGN INTUITIVELY. We create exciting relationships and dynamic balance in an abstract design as we organize dark and light shapes into a strong design (Notan). Through this intuitive process you will transform the ordinary into the extraordinary: your own unique composition. We study the amazing concept of GRISAILLE, a value-based monochrome painting technique often used to lay-in the first stage of an oil painting. Yet when refined, a Grisaille painting will stand as a beautiful, captivating work of art. We explore the differences between an Open and a Closed Grisaille painting, and learn techniques to handle paint effectively. You will leave this workshop with insight that empowers you to approach design from a more creative perspective, and with valuable new painting skills. Also, you will take home a Closed Grisaille study of your own unique composition that can serve as the basis for a full-color painting to be done independently. This small class allows for quality instruction through lecture, visuals, demonstration, and individual instruction. We use charcoal and oil paint.
