song, dance, and how to perform before a live audience. Campers will explore how to create characters and costumes, as well as, prop and set design while learning about stage direction. No two camp sessions will be the same as each week will offer a unique and exciting theatrical experience. Finish the week with a final performance on Friday at 2pm to share your amazing talent! week led by seasoned professional instructors. Our studio arts instructors provide campers the opportunity to experiment or refine techniques in a specific art medium. We often expect to be told what to do, but the secret is: The best stuff resides within yourself. DRAWING, PAINTING AND MIXED MEDIA EXPLORING COLOR WITH PASTELS This class is for anyone with a passion for pastels, beginners, intermediates and even pros. Pastels are the medium of choice for those that love color. They have the purest pigment of all art mediums and, hence, enable especially vibrant colors. In this class students explore and experiment different textures, surfaces, and application techniques to maximize the effect of color and obtain visually attractive works of art. Student are encouraged to use both pan pastels and traditional stick soft pastels. PASTELS AND OILS! WITH MARGARET DYER You can paint with oils or pastels in this class. We will paint from live models, photos, still-lifes and floral arrangements. We’ll explore drawing, composition, anatomy, proportion, value, perspective and color. Using a step-by-step method, you’ll see how easily you can tackle complicated subjects. You will be sent a schedule and supply list by email before the first class. Be prepared to paint the first class, bring all your supplies. On days we have a model, you need to bring a large newsprint pad and charcoal (vine or compressed) for gesture drawings for the first half hour of class. You will spend the next two and a half hours on your pastel or oil paintings. On days we have a model, bring cash to pay model (amount depends on number of students in class that day ($60 divided by number of students present. Usually less than $10 per student). CHUNKY KNIT BLANKET M&T Learn how to make a dreamy super thick and cozy knit blanket. This project requires no knitting experience and it’s so simple you wont even need knitting needles! BOLD AND BEAUTIFUL BODY-CONSCIOUS JEWELRY: Pattern Making and Fabrication for Fitted Jewelry NEW! Two-Weekend Workshop. When you put love, hard work and costly materials into a beautiful statement piece, wouldn’t it be awesome if it fit you just perfectly? It’s not always as easy as it looks, due to the uniqueness of each individual’s shape and size. Learn how to make patterns, templates and mockups for cuff bracelets and several types of neck collars, for yourself or others. The first weekend will focus on pattern and template making for a variety of styles. Students will use paper and jeweler’s brass to test and adjust patterns until a good fit is achieved. Then we will discuss materials and fabrication strategies for one project of your choice, to be completed during the second weekend. SALT WATER ETCHING
Learn how to safely etch your cooper and brass using salt water, a battery and a Silhouette Cameo die cutting machine to cut custom vinyl decals as the resist. We will cover how to apply the vinyl resist to your copper or brass, how to safely and properly etch your metal, how to stop the etching process, how to clean up the salt water when the etching process is complete, and how to properly filter the salt water so it can be reused again and stored properly. A list of all materials used in class will be provided. *Students are required to come to class with a printed/hard copy black and white image (no gray scale) that they would like to have etched onto copper or brass. CLASSICAL CHAINS USING THE LOOP-IN-LOOP METHOD Loop-in-loop chains have a simplicity and elegance that has endured since their creation thousands of years ago. INTRODUCTION TO TORCH-FIRED ENAMELS Come have fun and discover the color, pattern and texture of torchfired enameling. We will learn the basics of glass on metal with both opaque and transparent enamels applied by sifting and wet application. We will create design and pattern with stencils, foils, textured metal, stringers, and glass seed beads. Students will make several pairs of earrings and/or pendant/ centerpieces. STEEL FABRICATION - BLACKSMITHING AND METAL SCULPTURE Cut, weld, twist, bend, and forge steel using an array of techniques, tools, and methods. In this class, we will cover metalworking skills along with the proper usage of the gas forge, anvil, grinder, chop saw, oxyacetylene torch, and various types of welders. Beginning students will complete small projects to learn techniques. BASIC WOODTURNING WITH NICK COOK
There will be something in the class for everyone interested in the art and craft of woodturning. There will be discussions and demonstrations of a variety of woodturning techniques, from spindle projects to bowls and plates. Topics will include introduction to the lathe, turning tools, safety, sharpening, wood selection & preparation, chucking techniques along with sanding and finishing. Students will have plenty of hands-on time on the lathe. Spindle projects include basic spindles such as honey dippers, furniture parts, baby rattles, spinning tops and garden dibbles. Additional projects include turned lidded boxes and goblets. Students will also have the opportunity to turn a simple plate and bowl. If I am registering my child, I understand that this program is not licensed by Bright from the Start: Georgia Department of Early Care and Learning and is not required to be licensed. Spruill Arts does not offer Daycare Services. Safety rules are posted in the studio. Failure to follow safety rules and procedures may result in dismissal from the class. I also understand that the Spruill Center for the Arts has taken other reasonable precautions for my safety. I participate in this class solely at my own risk. I, the undersigned, have read this release and understand all its terms. I execute it voluntarily, with full knowledge of its significance, as a condition to participating in the class. There is a fee for late pick-ups.* • SCHOLARSHIPS: There are a limited number of scholarships available for our summer camp program. Contact the Education Director at 770.394.3447, extension 229. • GROUPING REQUESTS must be submitted on the registration form. Friends must list one another and be within a two (2) year age range. We do not guarantee placement. • CAMPER DROP-OFF AND PICK-UP: Walk your child in on the first day of camp. Carpool information at www.spruillarts.org. • MULTI-CAMP DISCOUNT: Register for 3 camps together: save $10 on all 3 camps and subsequent registrations.
