St. Marv's Countv Farm Bureau - A Look to the Future

Generally speaking it is our youth and ever-expanding technology that do so much to shape our future. Agriculture is no exception. The challenge will be to work with these two vital influences so that their impact on agriculture is positive, progressive, and respectful of what we do and who we are. From that perspective, we have opportunities right now to help shape our future by: o Developing a strong parhrership with the local school system. o Encouragrng, supporting, and even insisting on a strong agricultural component in the science curriculum of our elementary, middle, and high schools. o Encouragng and promoting agricultural field trips for students. r Promoting the stability and growth of 4-H. o Through 4-H and FFA, building a strong pool of young farmers preparing themselves to take leadership roles in the agricultural community. o Developing programs and projects to inform, educate, and empower the adult non-farm community on agricultural issues. o Make our agricultural programs, and our organizations, more visible to the community by developing a shong working relationship with local media.

Each individual in the agricultural communiff might consider a personal pledge to take time as opportunities present themselves to talking to decision-makers, as well as non-farm individuals, about agricultural topics and issues. The community cannot support agriculture if its people do not know about it. It is up to us to see that they know what the issues are and hear about them from a farmer perspectivenot from a legislator, or politician, not from a government agency representative or a self-appointed watch dog, but from those of us who have chosen agriculture as our work and our lifestyle.
