GAA LEAGUE 2 - PRF 27 May 2012

Pierre Marais astounding! By IAIN PEPPER

A very chilly Sunday morning greeted us at PRF for our 2nd GAA League event for 2012. A very chilly Sunday morning build. greeted us at PRF for our Unfortunately Carl Nicholl 2nd GAA League event for was the only pilot in 2012. Although not as cold & Master class & flew very windy as last year we had a well improving with every great entry of 19 pilots. We round to end up with a very must say thank you to PRF competent 67.17% round 3. for providing us with such a Next up were the Advanced great venue. pilots with 5 entries. First up were the F3A Pilots PJ Norden took the 1st 2 with 9 entries. The bar was rounds closely followed by set very high with the 1st Richard Wiedemann in a class pilot being Andre Stockwell of his own in the 3rd round. scoring a 73.06% . But this Although Richard had the did not scare the rest of the better %score it was PJ that pilots with Calvin Schroll, won . We all know that they Chris Harris & Pierre Marais breed them tough as nails all putting in better flights to in the BLUE BULL zone , but raise the bar even further. MaxBuizer really showed Needless to say that by that they are not scared off the time the 2 P & 1F anything. He had a bit of schedules had been finger trouble in the 1st round flown the bar had & destroyed his new Sebart in been raised to a point a ball of smoke. Not fased by that we have not seen this he jumped in his trusty here for a long time BAKKIE , went home & with the top 5 pilots arrived back in time for in the mid 70% area. round 2 with another Pierre Marais put in a plane. brilliant 2nd P flight to Although he finished score an astounding up 5th overall I think he 79.83%. It was good to deserves to be crowned see Clinton getting to the overall winner for his terms with his Peridot guts, determination & (ex Dean/Wolfgang) commitment. as well as John Brink WELL DONE MAX... improving with his new own design scratch

GAA LEAGUE 2 - PRF 27 May 2012 F3A Results

The Sportsman class had 4 entries. Watch out F3A pilots as there is a youngster, that is only just tall enough to use the mens urinal , Daviid Swanepoel that put in 3 amazing round to win the class with an average of 73.84%. Ayrton Valente flew very well to come home 2nd , but the way him & Daviid are flying it should not be long before they are

topping the charts in the Advanced class. All in all a great enjoyable days competition was had by all at a great venue. Special thanks to the GAA for their great organization skills , Oom Danie Potgieter our regular CD, to Carl & Dave Harris for capturing the scores & last but not least Mr Dugmore for the hours he spends doing the dirty work of field set up.

WP League 3 - hrf 03 JUNE 2012

17 entries had been received before the event with 4 withdrawals due to versions personal reasons. So 13 pilots arrived to take part in this 3rd league event of the year. We had planned, if time allowed for 4 rounds and we had the weather for it as well. First was the Novice class with two entries, Brian and Aidan who battled it out, but Brian was in a league of his own scoring a great 66.96 on his second round to win the class. Aidan found the going tough but did his best with a “non” pattern plane, DAD, it’s about time you let him use your Zepharo!! I am sure next time we will be seeing Brian in the sportsman class.

The Sportsman class had two withdrawals which left 4 pilots to battle it out. Rory from TMFC was a clear winner of the class but Richard (Aidans father) was a close second. Third and fourth, Anton and Mario with also close scores. Great to see a welcome return by Anton who was flying Advanced 3 years ago entering Sportsman with a third place result. I am sure if he sticks to it, will soon be back in Advanced and battling for first place. Three entries in Advanced saw Cobus with a great final round score of 68.17 making him the clear winner. Greg who has been out of flying for a couple of months managed to remember the schedule, just! Between himself and second

Z maneuver realize his mistake had to roll back thereby scoring 0. Brian improved to a high 50.

They do call for each other and very competitive, need I say more!!

In the 3rd round Ernie got a dead stick, Stuart just lost the plot and Brian wanted to go home, not good for anyone. At the end, Stuart took the win just ahead if Ernie and Brian in third.

Now to the big guns… (Ok, I can say that, I am doing the writing), Masters class, regulars Stuart and Brian where joined by Ernie Smith, who had decided to demote himself due to the F3A(F). First round saw Stuart blow the other out of the water with an impressive 66.83 flying his brand new Envision, Ernie still with his 2 stroke Quantum scoring 60.54 and Brian with 55.50. Second round was taken by Ernie with a 67, Stuart decided to do a full roll on the

Unfortunately Marc was the only F3A as Nazeem had to withdraw, but Marc as normal put on a top performance flying “P, P and F” with very respectable scores. A big that’s to the club and members who gave up a stunning day for this competition, to Dave and family for lunch and to the judges, Martin, Kas, Nic and Ludwig for there time.

Novice winner, Brian

John CalEFATO at BOMAC LEAGUE - not sure what he is trying to explain to Claude mackrill, maybe he is looking for his contact lenses

MODEL AEROBATIC ASSOCIATION OF SOUTH AFRICA

FROM THE NEW CHAIR May I commence by thanking my predecessor, John Brink and his outgoing committee for their dedication and application to the tasks demanded of steering an Association as is ours. To those committee members who are still with us, I say, welcome to the new era, congratulations on your re-appointment and may we have an amicable working association into the future. To the new members, thank you for stepping up to the plate and may your term be a rewarding and enjoyable one Briefly, my appointment was a surprise as I had only anticipated ratification of my Vice- Chairman post at the AGM. That said, it was mooted that John wished to stand down as Chairman to concentrate his time and effort on heading the organizing of the forthcoming F3A World Aerobatic Championship in 2013 here in South Africa. He certainly has a monumental task at hand and I think I speak for one and all, in wishing him and his team success. I now face the challenges of my new appointment and to me it has a two fold connotation. Precision Aerobatics is steeped in an historical background of success in South Africa, so it is with that in mind, I firstly, must carry on the Chairman’s role as diligently and successfully as possible and secondly, deem it a privilege to be at the helm. The transition period will be taxing personally, but I am confident that with the committee I have, the well wishes and pledges of support and assistance I have received from the members of our Association, it will be smooth. I do not anticipate any changes being made in the short term, however, if changes are to be made, they will be done as necessary, with finesse and the consensus of the members. In conclusion, I look to the future with expectation and a very positive image for the Model Aerobatic Association of South Africa. Long live Precision Aerobatics. Thank You. Arthur Eggar.

Sportsman Winner, (just) Mario

The rain stopped for the day The day started later

than scheduled but once

underway the small entry

kept to the program and we managed to fly 4 rounds.

Andre, enjoying another beautiful day in the cape

It was cold but dry when I arrived at 8. All of the previous week had been very wet, but the forecast for today was cloudy, mild with no wind. The forecasters were right on target. Martin, Nic and Ludwig where the three judges who gave up there time to judge all 10 entries flying 4 rounds. First up was Aidan in the Novice class, once again on his own and his flying improving during the event, his scores reflected this and his best score of 63.10 on his final flight gave him a very respectable 58.81 average. I am sure he will be flying sportsman very soon. They where next. Four Sportsman entries, the normal list of Richard, Mario, Gabriel and Rory. Rory is normally the one in front but Mario was hot on his heals in round 1.

Rory and Andre in deep discussion

WESTERN CAPE

WP League 4 - TMFC 01 JULY 2012

Round 2 and Rory had a failed receiver on his second maneuver only to stand and watch his swallow enter a hole in the ground. This left Mario to win the second round, but watch out, Richard and Gabriel close behind. The third and fourth rounds produced interesting results. Gabriel has finally found his rhythm and broke into the 60’s and won the 3rd and 4th rounds with fantastic 60+ scores, Well done. These two final rounds put Gabriel second only just behind Mario. Richard was third with a reasonable score. His was flying his Wind S for the first time but did some pit “maintenance” forcing him to fly his sons plane after round two. The sportsman class is looking very competitive. Advanced next and once again the terrible twins where the only entries. Andre and Greg. Greg is really battling, and this shows with scores in the high 40’s, low 50’s but with the lack of practice (pattern) it’s not surprising his scores are low. (sorry Greg)

Andre finally broke into the 60’s, scoring a very respectable 65.12 on his last round. With high 50’s in the previous rounds gave him a final 60+ score, his first Masters score of the season. With only two more league events to go, will he get that all important Masters invitation. Masters class next and Stuart and Ernie battled it out for the win. Ernie was late and missed the first round but once he arrived a got his new plane together managed to fly the remaining 3 rounds. Stuart won the next two rounds with good mid 60’s but Ernie did also score a good third round, this was only his third flight with this plane so I am sure this class is going to get very competitive.

Ernie showing off his new plane to Gabriel

Gregs OTOP and Andres PASSPORT

The final round was won by Ernie, Stuart just loss complete concentration and had a poor flight. Didn’t matter though as he had already won the class with a great overall average. Marc was the only F3A pilot. As normal Marc produced slow, precision flying in all four rounds.

WP League 4 - TMFC 01 JULY 2012

MODEL AEROBATIC ASSOCIATION OF SOUTH AFRICA

A little bit of confusion on his first flight, One half spins or two!!! A good score anyway. A great second score of +70. Then it was time for the ‘F’ . We all watched him fly the F with skill and graceful flying, I have no idea how one starts to practice all the maneuvers, such a hard schedule but Marc did improve on his final round despite a ‘0’ on his first maneuver.

We finished all 4 rounds by 2pm which was great timing and allowed the club members to take to the skies, they had sat around most of the morning waiting for us to finish, a big thanks to them.

Pilots support will be appreciated for Langabaan, they are so keen on Pattern we need to support them. If the cost of getting there is a problem they gat a lift…

The next League round is at Langabaan on 12 August, the next clinic is at PRF at the end of June.

(And this morning, Monday its raining!!)

Thanks again to all pilots, Judges and TMFC.

The pilot line-up

On arrival at the field, we were welcomed with hot coffee and rusks, a great idea, as the weather was sunny but very cold. Only 8 entries for this end of the season league event, with Cobus and Andre chasing scores for masters. Well the weather was good for high scores with very little wind, a great change after the cape was hit by strong winds and Gail force winds yesterday and Friday night.

2012 BOLAND Event Report August 2012

Sportsman had 3 entries Richard showing that he is getting used to his new plane and with an overall score of 57.46 will surely soon be a strong competitor for a class win. This was taken by Rory who once again was the winner. He is now the owner of Ernie’s quantum and once he gets used to the extra power, will certainly be a strong winner on the sportsman class, the it will be time to move to Advanced next year having now qualified for the Masters. Gabriel batted with his swallow and was ended third. Time to get that new plane going Gabriel. Advanced class was between Andre and Cobus, Greg had entered but the pressure of his daughter getting engaged must had put him in a frenzy!! Anyway, Andre with his passport and Cobus with his no name home build plane battled it out for the win. Both pilots flew very well but it was Cobus who took the win. Both pilots scored there 60+ scores for another masters qualification. Both needing one more score to qualify. Lets hope they get that last needed score at the last league event next month.

Novice pilot, ready for take-off

Judging the three classes, Novice to Advanced was Martin, Nazeem and Stuart. All our scores were very close and I must say I enjoyed scoring despite the cold breeze. Masters next and John and Stuart were the only entries. After two rounds the clear leader was stuart, John scored well but not good enough and Stuart was the clear winner. “I found it difficult to judge, fly and do the scoring, with the help of Megan. So I decided not fly my third round so I could compile the scoring and results”. Hopefully next year there will be a bigger entry here, this year was a learning curve for the club who are very enthusiastic and next year will certainly have one or maybe two leagues. To the pilots who did take part, see you next year. To those of you who didn’t, please try and support the events up here next year. Yes, it’s a long drive but only two Sundays in the year is not much to ask. Remember, shared transport is the best idea so next year, no excuses!!

Cool and the Gang Comments - by Neil Allen

A lovely day greeted our happy gang again. Cold at first, but it turned into a perfect sunny day, with gentle winds. Considering the week we are now having with rain and chilly weather, we are feeling lucky. Everyone was enjoying the flying so much that we stayed on for a fourth round.

Rory had emailed me to cancel as he was stuck in Durban, Tim and Marc just didn’t show. Claude had plane issues the day before and Kurt had plane issues on his first flight, so that left only one more pilot than the judges!

Richard told me that he had crashed his Sebart 50 the week before with complete radio failure but will be back next season with his CA Models Zafaro.

Anyway the event situated in the picturesque setting of the Paarl hills, with clear blue skies, 30c temperatures, slight breeze and a welcoming club staged this event.

Masters class was against Kurt and Stuart. Kurt had plane issues on his first round and aborted the flight and event. So that left Stuart with the class win and two practice rounds. His second round score of 69.04 was his best score to date and just missing out on that illusive 70%. Anyway this did help him achieve a very respectable final score. Thanks to the four judges, Martin, Christo, Nic and Ludwig who once again gave up part of there Sunday to judge. Thanks to BOMAC club for allowing us to to stage the comp and finally thanks to all the pilots who took part in events this year. It has been one of the most enjoyable seasons since I started, I do hope that next season is even better. The those pilots who qualified for the SA masters, congratulations. Changing of the guard As is traditional, the final event of the Gauteng Aerobatic Association (GAA) 2012 season was the GAA Provincial Championship, which was kindly hosted by Henley Aeromodelers on 22 and 23 September 2012. By Clinton Carter-Brown

The scorers

Henley Aeromodelers

is located close to Henley on Klip, north of the Vaal Dam, and will be the site for the 2013 F3A World Aerobatic Championship. These world class facilities have to be seen to be appreciated, with two flight lines, impressive runways, lapa, hanger, and even a swimming pool. Hosting the GAA champs at Henley allowed the GAA to arrange a packed 2 day event, flying on both flight lines, which also provided an opportunity to fly in conditions similar to those expected at next years’ world champs. It furthermore allowed us to test the facilities and identify any areas for attention in preparation for the world champs.

Entries closed a week before the event, and as expected a very impressive turnout was realized, with 33 pilots registering and only 1 cancellation. The breakdown per class was 6 Sportsman, 6 Advanced, 11 Masters and 9 F3A pilots. Entries included precision aerobatic pilots from as far afield as the Eastern Cape, Free State, Kwa-Zulu Natal, North West and Limpopo. The Friday before the event saw in excess of 10 pilots practicing at the Henley field. The official competition got underway on Saturday morning, starting with the pilots briefing. As always the contest director was Danie Potgieter Snr. With two flight lines in operation Danie was also the line

The full time judges for the event were Ivan Olivier (MAASA Chief Judge), Chris Theron, Bruce Clark, Sebastiano Sacca, and John Clements. Due to the need to run two flight lines, the additional judging duties were performed by several of the pilots. Roston Dugmore Snr set up the flags for both flight

lines, and the Dugmore family kindly assisted with the scoring. Catering was coordinated via Danie Potgieter Jnr, and saw a local catering company providing a wide range of great treats, eats and drinks. Flying started around 8:30, and the wind built steadily during the morning. By mid morning the wind had built to a demanding 20 knots plus, which was directly across the flight line. This presented a real challenge, especially for the northern flight line as the wind was directly across the single runway resulting in an extremely difficult landing. Although the plan was to complete two rounds of F3A P schedule and

3 rounds for all other classes on the Saturday, the weather had other ideas. At around 3:30pm dark storm clouds started to roll in, and lightning saw the second round of F3A stopped during the second flight. Within 20 minutes the heavens proverbially opened, with a downpour and even small hail. Unfortunately this bad weather saw the F3A and Masters rounds postponed till Sunday morning. After the late afternoon showers it cleared up reasonably, and a lovely evening was had with an excellent spit braai and entertainment in the form of our own established entertainer, John Clements.

MODEL AEROBATIC ASSOCIATION OF SOUTH AFRICA

GAA CHAMPs- LEAGUE 4 - HENLEY 22-23 September 2012

The hanger at Henley proved an excellent venue, and saw the 50 odd competitors, officials, family and friends enjoying a meal and drinks. Due to the need to fit in additional rounds on Sunday morning (as a result of the Saturday rain delays), flying on Sunday started earlier at 8:00 am. Fortunately there was sufficient time available on Sunday to complete all of the rounds and still finish flying by 2pm. The weather on Sunday was vastly improved, with a mild breeze, warm conditions and no rain. Thank goodness. Flying on Sunday was concluded by late lunchtime, and the prize giving followed shortly thereafter. Due to the generous donations of our event sponsors, the prizes for the top placed competitors were fantastic, with Bridgestone Formula 1caps, iPods, spur vouchers, medals and certificates. The results are tabled, and show the fierce levels of competition. In particular congratulations to Christopher Harris, who took top honors in F3A, bringing to an end an era of domination by Pierre Marais and Andre Stockwell. Our thanks to our sponsors and benefactors. Without their generous support the GAA Champs would not have been the top class event that it was. In particular thanks to Seven Eagles Spur in Greenstone Mall, Portable Shade, and Iain Pepper, who also provided the use of his home at the Vaal Dam for the accommodation of the officials. Naturally once again thanks to all of the officials that made the event possible (contest and line directors, judges, scribes, caterers, entertainment) and in particular to Henley Aeromodelers and their membership for allowing us to use the excellent facilities, and for giving up their weekends’ flying for us. Thanks also to the Henley members who were present from Friday, and helped ensure that everything ran smoothly, such as wiring in the generator electrical connection. I would like to take the opportunity to thank my fellow members of the GAA committee for their hard work and dedication. As is customary the GAA AGM was also held at the Champs, with the primary intention of selecting the committee members for 2013. Danie Steyn was not available for re-election, but Clinton Carter-Brown, Grant Brook and Iain Pepper had offered to stand for re-election for another year. In addition the 2013 committee will also include Roston Dugmore Snr, Max Buizer, Van Zyl Koegelenberg, Gary Lees and Stadler Brits. The final precision aerobatics event for 2012 will be the MAASA Masters event hosted by Klerksdorp Radio Flyers. I look forward to seeing many of the pilots at the Masters.

They do an excellent toasted mega sandwich lunch though, which is a very civilized way to do things. In Sportsman class our regular ace “Speedy” van Niekerk was joined by our glider guiders, Dave Greer and Simon Nelson, who put up credible performances. Dave’s plane is the Angel 50, and Simon has a Wind 50. We also had a welcome return from Mike Wyatt, flying for the first time his Zenith 90 size electric. This is a old design of mine that

Mark used his Wind 2m instead of the Azurit for this event, and gave the judges constant backchat as usual. Johan de Lange, otherwise known as Osama bin Lange, tried flying the F3A P pattern for the first time, after practicing it on his simulator, and did extremely well. I flew my newly rebuilt E-motion,

SA Masters Klerksdorp Radio Flyers where kind enough to host the 2012 Masters.

I was told that up until Thursday the weather had been wet, windy and very stormy. KRF must have had a magic wond, the weather changed for the weekend, sunshine and warm conditions, the only part KRF forgot to get changed was the wind, which blow all weekend.
