ans of popular brunch spot Cafe Melba living in the western part of Singapore need not schlep to the East Coast for their favourite Melba Burger anymore. This is because the Australian-style cafe has opened an outpost in Mediapolis @ one-north. Located within the shiny new MediaCorp Campus at 1 Stars Avenue, the casual eatery replicates the laid-back atmosphere and kid-friendly policy of its older sibling but with a more sophisticated slant. Designed as a relaxing spot for onenorth office workers to retreat to in the middle and end of the day, the cafe dishes out all-day breakfasts
in a comfy setting decorated by Australian designer Emma Maxwell. On weekends, the outlet becomes a brunch hotspot, just like the original Cafe Melba at the Goodman Arts Centre. A recent winner at the Italian A’Design Awards 2016 for Best Interior Design, interior designer

Emma brings her fresh perspective and magic touch to the interior of Cafe Melba at Mediapolis. The warm and cosy space inspired by the Australian landscape takes its cues from Mother Nature. Wood-panelled floors, solid oldgrowth oak tables and handcrafted chairs made of recycled wood
Caraway dark rye bread and avocado
Parma ham and rocket pizza
Grilled asparagus and poached egg salad
are artfully paired to create a stylish and inviting space. Adding a hint of glamour is the handmade copperhued ceiling consisting of layers of bespoke recycled metal plates inspired by the Louis Poulsen PH Artichoke lamp. Other than creating a stunning feature, the metal layers also act as an effective sound baffler. Complementing this are threedimensional geometric concrete tiles famed by two curved windows crafted from pale oak. Known for her ultra-modern and luxurious style, Emma designed all the furniture and lighting especially for the outlet. Reminiscent of midcentury modern shapes, patterns and colours, the pieces are not only elegant they are tremendously cushy, the more to encourage diners to make themselves comfortable
without feeling rushed. The globular copper-lined pendant lamps, in particular, work as a way to softly illuminate the space in the evening. In the day, generous floor-to-ceiling windows allow plenty of daylight to flood into the space all while letting the greenery from the site play a part in setting the scene. This relaxed and carefully styled backdrop has a knack for encouraging diners to indulge in leisurely meals – be it brunch or dinner. Cafe Melba’s hearty breakfast signatures are all available here, including its popular Full Melba Breakfast consisting of pork sausage, eggs any style, bacon, cherry tomatoes, baked beans, mushrooms, mini vegetable rosti and toast as well as Eggs Benedict served on an English muffin. There are also all-day dining favourites like the famous Melba Burger and a selection of classic and creative thin-crust pizzas, including the scrumptious Chilli Crab pizza and vegetarian Forest Mushroom pizza.

Neighbourhood to watch Vibrant waterways, sustainable designs and smart features – we round up the exciting developments and upcoming projects that make a home in Punggol so sought-after Text Lee Kai Lin Photos Wilson Pang (unless otherwise stated)

IT
’s hard to imagine the lively, advanced and next-generation town of Punggol as the fishing village it once was. But those days are long over with major overhauls transforming Punggol into the sustainable waterfront town it was promised to be. In 2012, the town received seven new waterfront districts: Punggol Point, Canal, Waterway East, Waterway West, Crescent, Matilda and Northshore. Since then, multiple milestones have helped
place the northeastern town on the map for Singaporeans – from the unveiling of Punggol Waterway Park and the buzzedabout Coney Island to the opening of Waterway Point. But Punggol’s development is not yet complete – there are phases it has yet to embark on, from the expansion of its industrial cluster to the upcoming launches of hotly anticipated housing projects. Here are some of the district’s most notable current features, as well as developments to look out for in the next few years.
The picturesque Punggol Waterway Park meanders through the heart of the town, connecting facilities via paths for the convenience of residents.
Treelodge@Punggol has been developed with eco-friendly features.
The new Punggol Visitor Centre will serve as a shared community space for residents.

Slated for completion in 2020, Punggol Northshore will be Singapore's first smartenabled public housing district. Features such as sensor-controlled lighting will characterise public spaces, while homes will come with a range of digital facilities like data ports and additional power, allowing for owners to easily install other smart technology. The Punggol Northshore zone will also boast solar-ready roofs, a smart waste conveyance system as well as car park management technology that can control the number of lots for visitors during peak and non-peak hours, ensuring residents have sufficient lots. The first batch of smart homes launched for sale are Northshore Residences I and II, expected to be completed in 2020. They will be situated along Punggol Way, next to Samudera LRT station.

When the HDB constructed Punggol Plaza in 2004, it was one of the last neighbourhood centres it built as part of housing estates. Now more than 10 years on, HDB is bringing back neighbourhood centres – a move in response to discussions with residents. With a focus on community spaces, Oasis Terraces will be one-stop destination for residents to meet their amenity needs.

To be completed earlier will be the Punggol Visitor Centre – a three-storey complex in Punggol Town Plaza set to open later this year. The centre will not only be a shared community space, but also serve as a site for residents and visitors to learn more about the development of the waterfront town. A first of its kind, the centre will have an interactive 3D scale model of Punggol Town on the ground floor, allowing the public to have a firsthand experience of key public housing developments, transportation, and the greenery and water bodies in the town.

keep things cohesive and polished, the zones are mostly decked out in furnishings of varying monochromatic shades. “We wanted a clean and bright space,” explains Jean Tan the homeowner of the swanky three-bedroom condominium. “Our last home had a darker theme, with grey and black walls. With this home, the black-and-white concept allows us to enlarge the space visually with natural light bouncing off the walls and white cabinets.” The couple engaged the team at interior design firm Distinct Identity to help them realise their gorgeous space. Armed with a wealth of experience, Home Journal ensures that each project is meticulously executed with precision. The young and dynamic interior design firm provides a full suite of solutions – from interior design consultation to onsite coordination – for all your home improvement needs. Specialising in industrial and loft-style interiors, Home Journal aims to translate their clients’ personalities into meaningful, well-designed spaces.
MASTER BEDROOM The master bedroom takes on a hotel-like ambience with chic decor, crisp bed linens and a sophisticated neutral colour palette. To add a sense of opulence and a soft touch, designer Kalyn Guo decided to clad one side of the wall in grey fabric panels. The full-height black wardrobe, which extends from wall to wall, is given the same panelled design #open in line with the modern work Victorian theme.
KITCHEN Painted black, the kitchen cabinets stand in stark contrast to the white subway tiled walls. While most of the tiles were laid in a conventional staggered brickwork pattern throughout the cooking zone, the tiles for the backsplash were laid in a herringbone design, giving the space an unusual visual interest. Black pipes and fittings as well as metallic accents provide an industrial spin. OVERALL What best articulates the modern Victorian look the most in this home is perhaps this blue-grey, fullheight TV wall, which was framed and trimmed by a professional carpenter and then spray-painted to leave a woodgrain finish. The TV is fully recessed, allowing the home to achieve a seamless appearance. The living room is defined by light woodgrain tiles, while the flooring for the front entrance and the doorway into the kitchen is defined by a darker shade.
Home Journal Pte Ltd
A half wall not only visually opens up a small space, it also creates a sense of airiness while adding interest.
LIVING On one side of the living room, a brick wall adds tactile interest to the space. The hues of this gritty surface were chosen to match the brown leather sofa. Kalyn chose to create a half-wall that opens into the dining room to create a sense of airiness and spaciousness throughout the home.
DINING ROOM This dining area is temporary – the homeowners plan to turn this into a kids’ room in the future. For now, a custom marble-topped high table is set amidst a crisp-white colour palette, offering the homeowners an elegant spot to hang out. An industrial-style light fixture hangs above, providing a focal point for the space.
