ACTION REPLAY

SQUIRES GATE 3-0 STEETON AFC

Gate hosted Steeton AFC last Saturday in their final pre season-friendly of the summer. Performances had been strong in preseason at times, but a win was still elusive going into this one for Evans’ men. It was a strong start from Gate, who got a deserved opening goal on 12 minutes.

Patient build up play led to Ryan Riley finding Theo Ball in behind, who crossed back to Riley, with the winger laying off James Boyd to volley into the back of the net in his first start after his return to the club. The lead was doubled just six minutes later, with Ball involved again. The striker initially won the ball back then playing an excellent pass in behind for Riley who showed great composure to round the Steeton goalkeeper and finish calmly. The visitors almost pulled one back before the break, but a goal-line clearance from Isaac Abankwah kept the score at 2-0. Luke Holden went close for Gate too before half time, heading against the post from a pinpoint Riley corner. It was a quieter second half, although Nathan Bartram did have to produce an excellent lastditch challenge to deny a Steeton player a clear run at goal. The win was sealed on 76 minutes, with stand -in skipper Chris Webster finishing smartly after a brilliant cross from the right wing. It secured a good win for Luke Evans’ side, who can take confidence and belief from both the goals scored and the clean sheet into the coming season.
