ACTION REPLAY

SQUIRES GATE 4-2 LONGRIDGE TOWN

Report by James Ashton

It was the perfect start for Gate, going ahead inside three minutes. Pett intercepted a back pass and was brought down inside the area by a Longridge defender, with Pett burying the penalty into the bottom corner.

It got better for Gate ten minutes later, with Josh Westwood doubling the lead. A brilliant Riley corner was met by Westwood, with his towering header deflecting into the back of the net.

Gate made it 3-0 on 29 minutes through Nathan Cliffe. Good work between Hughes and Riley down the right led to Mekkaoui-Abouzaid beating his man in the box, rounding the keeper and finding Cliffe who smashed into the open goal.

Cliffe scored his second and Gate’s fourth just six minutes later, with Pett doing brilliantly to keep the ball and find Mekkaoui-Abouzaid on the edge of the box who layed it off for Cliffe to finish clinically past the Longridge goalkeeper. The visitors did get a goal back before half time. Gate gave the ball away from a throw in, and Jack Arrowsmith was found in behind and fired past Nathan Pennington in the Gate goal.

Longridge scored a second goal on 57 minutes. Gate failed to clear a free kick from the right, with the ball played back into the box and bundled into the bottom corner.

Gate weathered the storm though and went close to a fifth goal on a couple of occasions. Firstly Mekkaoui-Abouzaid went one-on-one and tried to take it round the goalkeeper but was denied. Riley then had a well-struck free kick parried away.

Pennington was called into action at the other end to make two excellent saves. Firstly the goalkeeper denied Ing from close range, then tipped away a goal bound header from the bottom corner.

Pett almost got his second goal and Gate’s fifth twice in the closing stages. Firstly the striker was denied from close range, then he headed agonisingly wide from the following corner.
