SEMESTER 1 | IN MENTOR : KENNY FRASER,

LLED GARDEN | URBAN ACCUPUNCTURE

NDIVIDUAL DESIGN SIMON BELL, PAUL MORSLEY

GRANTON WALLED GARDEN Granton walled garden is widely considered as the hidden garden or secret garden of Edinburgh. it has immense relevance in the history of Edinburgh. It bears trees that are aged more than 100 years. The B-Listed compound wall shows its archaeological importance too. For the last few years, the garden is taken care of by the Friends Group of Granton walled garden. it is now a place where the native people are using it as a community garden. We were asked to propose a new design for the garden. Since it is a community garden the concept was to create a closed looping pathway that holds the elements together like a community. The existing pathway in the garden is linear and was creating a strong statement in the landscape. When we analysed the history of the garden and the castle. Linearity doesn’t fit the context. The path travelled by the garden even from the historical days had up and downs with twist and turns. So in order to blend the history, the idea was to create meandering paths for the circulation merging with what exists.

VISIBLE

INVISIBLE

The concept is the reaction to the fieldwork. After analysing the data collected, the relationship of the community with the garden space triggered me. So, the focus was given to enhance the interaction between the human and plant species. The idea came from a philosophical thought of mine. “Like us the humans, tree & plants have life and they express themselves in different ways. They are interacting in between them and also trying to communicate with us in many ways “ I believe that Plants/ Trees are trying to communicating with us through sensations. The sound made by leaves in wind Make flowers, symbolise Seasonal Change They share odour They give us Fruits Hugging a Tree will make us Relax

RETAINED STRUCTURE

The historical elements were so strong in the present garden, so the design was made respecting those historical flavours. Tree of sacrifice is the icon of the project.it is a tree sculpture made to remember the sacrifice of a Ash tree. it is removed from the site before being infected by the Ash die back issue. So the Ash tree wood was later reused to make entrance structure for the garden. Even though the tree was cut down, it was reused at the same place it actually exists.

TREE OF SACRIFICE

Instead of usual formal seating, mounds were positioned across the garden which can be used as a informal seat space.

TREE CITY

| EDINBURGH

NDIVIDUAL DESIGN NON, NORMAN VILLEROUX

A MILLION TREE CITY The city of edinburgh is after a mission, of making edinburgh, a million tree city. The project works in three scales, territorial, park network and site scale. After many studies and research, a theme was formulated for each scale, which can be relatable in each scale. The territorial scale includes the whole city, and the theme for the design was conceived as poetics of connectivity. It’s an idea of connecting the island like green spaces to the blue network. The poetic layer inspired me to give a poetic finish on the focus of connectivity. it cant be peeled off because it’s Edinburgh. For a detailed approach in park network scale, the city’s northwestern area, ie between the Dean village and Cramond Beach, was selected. The network was made upon the poetics of romanticism. Since the place has already a romantic flavour, the design was to enhance it to a much wider context and to make it more organic.

TERRITORIAL SCALE

On the territorial scale, it was about connecting the archipelago green areas with the existing blue network. 3 rivers were pick out based on research,ie Water of leith, Braid burn and River Almond. The green spaces with in the city were connected to each other and these clusters are later connected to these rivers forming a complete network of blue and green infrastructure of the city. For the park network, parks in between the Water of Leith and the river almond that connects to Cramond beach were shortlisted.Considering the importance of Lauriston Castle even from the romantic era,

it was selected automatically. In the romantic era map of Edinburgh, the Lauriston farms and the Silverknowes were marked with predominant importance. So I just added that too on the future network even though the golf course has restricted entry. The Brunsfield Links and the Burgess Golf Course were 2 major golf course in this area even from the post-industrial era. Effectively, there is 3 golf course in a mile radius. So the amount of golfing area can be reduced to make new interventions in the remaining land. Along with these parks, few other parks were added into complete the network.

EXISTING

Interaction with the stakeholders and the people of Edinburgh helped in proposing a new intervention. Along with the proposed, cycle network can also be used as the connecting corridor. The cycle network often aligned away from the traffic zones, and are not treated well. In some regions, it is hard to create a road landscape. In those selected regions the proposal was to make use of the parking area allocated on both sides of the road. it will force the people to use public transport and can reduce the traffic inflow.

PROPOSED

The Water of Leith walkway is a dominant factor in Edinburgh’s landscape but in the majority of places, it is active only on one side of the river. Since we are considering the water of lieth as the backbone of the network, a walkway on the other side also was proposed.

The typologies were articulated based on the extensive ecological research performed. Across the city, the seashore is protected by well-defined sea walls and was creating a barrier to the people to interact with the sea except for portabello beach and a few harbours. To overcome that a finger-like projection was introduced. Green and brown roofs were introduced over the selected buildings to create favourable conditions for the birds to get fed. As the river are the protagonists of the design, intervention proposed over the river edges were planting more trees and plants that feed more birds. It will facilitate the migration of birds from their hotspots to other parts of the city. They can be a reason for the new sprouting of new trees in those regions. Apart from these onshore interventions, an offshore intervention was introduced in the proposal, of adding floating green platforms that allows the seal and the birds to sit on and feed.

When comes to the site scale , Lauriston farms situated near the Silverknowes beach was selected as the stewardship park. Lauriston Farms is a land of infinite opportunities, that’s why it has been chosen as the stewardship park. Being a pivotal part of a romantic network, the stewardship park also shares a similar rhythm. The idea is to create a space where everything interacts with each other, Human, landscapes, birds, land, water etc. it has a large grazing land at the southern end almost up to the middle of the farm.

The human movement is facilitated using a wooden path, that starts from Silverknowes side, runs down the hills and turns above the wetlands and finally forms a symmetrical path before it reaches Cramond. Both entrances have dedicated spaces for activities, where people can gather together and kids can play. Tree planting was proposed on all sides other than the north and the northwest. When comes to the northern edge of the site, the land is treated as a combination of freshwater wetland and marine wetland, which then extends to the sea.

A fimic expression of the design was done along with it. The story starts from the Pentland Hills, where the majority of the river running through the city originates. Throughout the theme of poetics of connectivity, the river is used as the protagonist. Initially, the seasonal changes in the present landscape are featured using the present section of the river. As time flows the season changes through the section. The birds in the section will guide to the proposed master plan of the city and later to the updated section of the river. The water of Leith is taken as the protagonist character since it originates and ends within the city limits. As the river flows and reaches near Roseburn and dean village. From here, the birds will be flying in search of a place with rhythmic similarity and find it near the Cramond and the Silverknowes beach. Towards the end,m a romantic park network is featured, by poetically connecting the spaces using the flavour of romanticism. it will then points towards the stewardship park and a moment in the park. Now, we are at the beach and it ends. PLAY Started from the hills like the river, flows through the city like the river and reaches the seashore, like the river, At last, it merges with the sea, like the river

GREENS & BLUES Greens and Blues is a competition entry, were the landsacape part was done by me and my friend Nirmal did the architectural side, ie the tree house design. The site is located at Cekmekoy District of Turkey which is 33 km away from Istanbul. We believe that nature is the wholesomeness of modernity; and its quality of life. The overwhelming technological advancements and interventions portray ‘Futuristic serenity’ as a bureaucratic title to differentiate it from natural exquisiteness. We feel nature has always been the epitome of ‘design’ of the past, the present and it will be in the future. Sustainability is the key to that future. The approach is started by reinstating the fact of implementing the design principles of futurism; dynamism and energy, into some of the principles of environment; everything is connected to everything. Thus forming a reaction where the dynamic elements of the project are connected using the asymmetric flow and liquidity of nature.

The design concept was inspired by the archipelago formation near Istanbul. The proximity of the site to the sea where the archipelagos present were the main reason for taking inspiration from it. The activities were segregated based on the many factors and were clustered accordingly. Those clusters were later conceived as islands and these islands are connected using a pathway, which resembles water.

ISLANDS OF COMMUNE The islands of the commune is a zone dedicated to public access. in these islands, people will be are of different state of mind. it like the normal society we have; people with a different state of mind. When they start to walk through the trails. A contrasting tree welcomes them in the middle of the walk, it is placed strategically for a reason(to be revealed on the next stage). As they walk more a gabion wall will creepers will be present in a hand distance, a touch of nature to settle the mind.

KEY PLAN

TRAILS -blue colour -contratsing colour directes to the islands -experiencing the landscape with tranquilty

ISLAND 2 : OPEN AIR THEATER -existing sloped topography with minor changes -floating seat walls -Raised platform at the lowest point -Boundary has designer wall of varying height and a part of it is connected to the nearest island wall, it creates a overhead connectivity with the neighbouring island and permeable closed space for the valleys. (to be detailed) -the edge is bermed to the sea of pebbes which will be later occupied by planned or unplanned vegetation

VALLEYS

-scattered green patches with thick vegetation -Sea of Pebbles, which can be also used as an adventure trail -the berm which will be a space for vegetations -experiencing the landscape with adventure

ISLAND 1: CHILDRENS PLAY AREA - Childrens Play Area - Equipped with play equipments - Surface finishes : Sand

ISLAND 3 : FOREST -It has a variety of native woodland species -acts as a buffering zone between the next plot. -the natual contour is maintained and the at the top you can experience a wider view

VALLEYS - scattered green patches with thick vegetation - Sea of Pebbles, which can be also used as an adventure trail - the berm which will be a space for vegetations - experiencing the landscape with adventure

ISLAND 4 : VEGETATION AREA - dedicated area for food production - stragetically placed to get maximum sunlight

ISLANDS OF VIBRANCY the island of vibrancy welcome you with a hike and followed by vegetation space and a kids play area. An island dedicated to making the atmosphere serene.

ISLAND 5 : ZIP LINE & ACTIVITY -dedicated area for mixed actiivties -strategically placed closer to the tree houses -It includes city view point and stargazing platforms

ISLANDS OF TRANQUILITY The final, island of tranquillity has space for meditation and an open area for socialising where the people will feel the complete happiness ISLAND 3 : MEDITATION AREA AND YOGA CENTER - dedicated area for meditation - to be detailed with city view point and yoga center and tree plantings

VALLEYS - scattered green patches with thick vegetation - Sea of Pebbles, which can be also used as an adventure trail - the berm which will be a space for vegetations - experiencing the landscape with adventure

ISLAND 4 : SOCIAL ACTIVITY SPACE - dedicated area for socialising, gatherings

Yoga CenterFour wooden platforms to create spaces for the functioning. The roof of this place depicts an enclosed volume of trees and an elevated floor.

TREE OF SACRIFICE As Geddes Visiting Fellows of 2021 at the ESALA, Barcelona based architects Eva Prats and Ricardo Flores conducted a workshop on using filmy techniques in design development. I was one of the 13 students selected and completed the workshop. We were asked to take a moment in any of our previous design for filmmaking. The Tree of sacrifice concept from the Granton walled garden project was the one chosen by me. The films narrate through the emotion of an Ash tree, getting cut off because of the Ash dieback issue. It was conceived as a monologue, where the emotions are conveyed using words.
