ADAPTIVE SYSTEMS IN NATURE Process of coagulation Second year undergraduate dynamic installation GROUP PROJECT
The installation is an abstracted re-imagining of the structural and physical changes that take place within our body due to the process of coagulation, or clotting. The morphing and expansion of the red blood cells, the tightening of the fibrin strands, the shrinking and collapse of the clot structure- each of these processes are important stages of coagulation that were studied and represented in the form of a dynamic wall installation.

A) PIVOT MECHANISM
The final installation to represent the unwinding strands, expanding fibres and contracting clot involved CNC routed PVC plywood with telescopic tongue and groove joinery. The entire network was then mounted on the wall, supported by steel rods attached with plates. The telescopic movement was achieved with the help of hollow tubes concealed behind the PVC ply. Each unit could be pulled out centrally from the wall, creating gaps representing the tear in collagen. The combined pull of the fibrin network and the compression of platelets bridged these gaps, causing the clot to form and the wound to heal.

MUSEUM OF ARTS AND SCIENCES JVPD Scheme, Mumbai, India Fourth year undergraduate project ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN
The streets of South Bombay are home to a diverse range of ecclectic and colonial architecture. Scattered across the old city, these monumental buildings offer us a glimpse into the past with their grand geometries and bold volumes. Walking through these structures offers one a variety of experiences with their changing intensities of light and mass. The positioning of elements and the geometry of the facades, purposely designed to create different qualities of space also serve as decorative features- establishing colonial symbols which adapt to the climatic conditions of a tropical country. The relationship between the human scale and the facade elements was studied and the observations then converted into a contemporary facade which would create diverse interactions betwen the user and the space.
The resultant facade was created using the geometry of the circle positioned at different heights and with varying sizes. The openings were adjusted according to the human scale, allowing differing quantities of light and defining the public and private zones within the structure. The facades were then folded along a grid and placed on site, where the existing site conditions dictated the placement of openings. Areas connected to the main roads were provided with double screens for privatizing the space within, while intersecting facades created unique conditions of light and volume. Each separate space was therefore defined by its own individual experience, setting down the parameters for allocating the programme and function.
The plan consists of five different circulation networks with separate starting and ending points that move through the structure, displaying exhibits relevant to their individual categories. The spaces between are used for recreational purposes or administrative activities.

Applying the narrative to New Market, Kolkata Established on 1st January, 1874, the site chosen was the first municipal market in Calcutta. Over two thousand stalls selling a variety of products were enclosed within the covered arcade. The Hogg market attracted not only local merchants, but also immigrants from outside the city who set up notable establishments, some of which are still popular destinations.

Keeping this in mind, the site was re-imagined as a convergence of different storylines- each highlighting their own aspect of the market to transport the user into a fictionalised architectural journey. “The most compelling charm about the place lies in its ability to adapt from an exclusive covered arcade centered upon the European ideal of a marketplace, to a bazaar steeped in local flavour and converted into something which conveys the very essence of the city. The building is alive in its own way- behaving like a native resident and changing its colours and experience with the advent of new seasons.”
