A Learning Center and Incubator CONCE PT: T H E NA R R AT IV E PA R A D O X An experiential space where the narration guides the paradox

The design idea is to work in angles in both plans and form and provide a dynamic and vibrant space that encourages creativity, ideation and growth of each individual through collaborative spaces that enhances networking and working outside their comfort zone.

1B. RE-IMAGINING URBAN STREET An Urban Design Group Project CONCE PT: DES IG NING T H E N E E D

The streets around Swoyambhu Nath are busy both in vehicular and pedestrianized scale. It is due to it’s fame as the renowned World Heritage Site as well as our religious and cultural values as Nepalese citizens. Recently, the road has been made One- way minimizing the vehicular traffic. Also, the entrance of heavy loading vehicles have been prohibited in order to minimize the impact. Here, we have designed the street according to it’s present condition. - Minimizing the carriage way. - Adding footpaths on both sides of the road. - Integrating the footpaths with the building’s platform. - Designing street amenities such as planter boxes, seatings, etc. - Creating sense of place. - Well designed vegetation pattern. - Multipurpose street sections.

Location: Swoyambhu Parikrama road Typology: Secondary road Connections: Swoyambhu chowk to Kimdole Designed section of Parikrama Road

The entrance to the street which has recently been made One- Way, not allowing any vehicle to enter through that street

Unused section of the street due to no provision of black topped paving. Used for parking and dumping

Depleted condition of the street due to unmanaged street design, parking and unintentional vegetation growth

1B. RE-IMAGINING URBAN STREET An Urban Design Group Project CONCE PT: DES IG NING T H E N E E D

SECTION 1: Various levels of the streets with the minimized width of carriage way only allowing one way flow of vehicles 7|Shreya Singh|

SECTION 2: Same section with the carriage way being used as pedestrian street during festivities such as Buddha Jayanti, Kora Parikrama, etc.

Creating a vibrant and live active environment through integration of sense of place using the Buddhist Prayer flags in an uniform order. Also the integration of footpath to the building platform creating a live shopfront with vibrant flooring

Transforming the present scenario with designing according to the need of an one way road with pedestrian sidewalks, sitting space

The drainage system integrated with the planter boxes for proper utilization

Introduction

OLD ST OR IES NEW S C R IP T

The project was divided into two parts: Study Phase and Design Phase. Badegaun being on the verse of identity crisis and destruction of the existing heritages, we analysed the issues and proposed the solutions in such a way that the heritages are not compromised.

Issues • Complicated property ownership • The lack of an urban plan, owned by the municipality • Unplanned development in the new town threatens the visual unity of the Old Town. • Failure to understand the need for design guidance. • The lack of access to private and/ or government capital and grants

Old Stories

New Scripts Heriage Conservation •Propose alternate route in order to preserve the Laachi •Adaptive reuse of old buildings into a. Bed and Breakfasts, Homestays b. Revitalization through small elements of delight in streetscape c. Training schools •Restoration of old buildings and open spaces • Heritage walk through the Jatra and festival routes • Local Architectural character • Archives • Preserve the heart of the city (lachi) • Protected Vistas 9|Shreya Singh|

• Satellite city of the traditional town of Patan • Historical Route to the settlement through Tanga gate • Historically gated City • Historically designated resting place on the way to Godawari • Kal Bhairab built on the ruins and as a vantage point of the city • Economically active area with agricultural background and home based textile industries Tourism Development •Adaptive reuse •Heritage walk through Jatras and Festival Routes •Preservation and protection of Sadaksheri Lokeshwor Chaitya • Provision of bus stop • Creating sense of place in the specified areas •Vibrant retail and residential zone •Live and remarkable Bazaar area

The current plan proposes a 22 m wide road through the badegaun settlement that if happens destroys the whole town of badegaun. So, a proposal was made in order to conserve the town and an alternate route was proposed from the other side of the settlement so that the town is conserved.

Economic Upliftment • Galleries, commercial centers for the trade and display of local goods and services • Community Initiatives a. Skill generating workshops b. Traditional eatery and restaurants c. Awareness Campaign

Sustainable Approach • Integration of green spaces such as parks, terrace farming, etc. •Energy efficiency through awareness and use of energy efficient techniques a. Solar PV b. Rain water harvesting c. Use of animal waste for bio gas production and manure in agricultural lands.

Conservation Studio Project OLD ST OR IES N EW S C R IP T

The town had its traditional route which now existed as an alleyway due to the new road. So, a proposal was made in which the traditional route was converted into a heritage walk route going through the gates and main attraction points of the settlement. This allowed the revival of the old settlement, their ways and their traditions.

11|Shreya Singh|

The gate which was not present at present was proposed in Tanga tole as the gateway to the settlement

Kwa Nani was revived as Aila tasting and traditional eatery.

Sova Nani was resurfaced to its orginal glory as a resting place

Lusi Jhol tole lacked conservation which as restored

PAV I L I O N - S PA C E F O R E V E R Y O N E Cum Community Center CONCE PT: IN T EG R AT IN G A N AT O M Y The city of Kirtipur stands tall on various level nestled in between various cultural and social aspects along with high held history. Through the concept of INTEGRATING ANATOMY of the city, I have tried integrating the town into the site along with digging deep into the anatomy of the city and bringing the fading essence back to life.

Taking datum points along the diagonals of the site.

Raising levels in the plaza area resembling the levels seen the elevation of Kirtipur.

Cutting and maintaining the plane into ramp for special needs and accessibility

Aligning the built spaces around the datum point.
