House or residence is one of the basic needs for humans. Where, this basic need will determine the level of welfare as well as the quality of human life itself. Therefore, a dwelling in essence can affect the quality of life of the people who live in it. The assignment took place in semester 3, 2016. The Idea given was to design a house located not far from the campus area, so I chose Jl. Sei Asahan because the area was intended for housing. The user is a little family consists of parents and their two children, daughter and son. The father is business man and the mother is a housewife. The daughter is currently in high school, and the son is in elementary school. SEI HOUSE | 7

CROSS VENTILATION

This house uses a tropical architectural theme with the use of wood materials (doors, windows, and several parts of the floor), and cement plaster for finishing the walls. This house also optimizes the use of natural light by increasing the opening and using cross ventilation. In addition, this house also has a garden beside the back of the house, also on the front and side of the building. The building is divided into 2 levels of height, for the front (living room and bedrooms) 1 meter raised with wooden floors. Meanwhile, the rear (bathroom, kitchen, and dining area) is only 15 centimeter elevated from the ground. SEI HOUSE | 8

A destination must have various facilities needed by tourists so that a tourist’s visit can be fulfilled and feel comfortable. The various needs of tourists, among others, transportation, accommodation, travel, attractions Iculture, recreation, and entertainment), food services, and souvenir items (Gde Pitana 2005 : 101). When we have plans for vacation out of town, one thing that is important and we have to prepare is renting an inn.

The assignment took place in semester 4, 2017. The Idea given was to design a homestay in Pantai Bul- Bul, Balige. This homestay consists of the manager’s house and several homestay rooms. There is also a restaurant and common rooms, too. BG HOMESTAY | 20

Student dormitory is one of the facility of every university, both government and private university, as a place to rest, to study, and to socialize. This facility has a variety of uses, depending on the decision of the university itself. However, the student dormitories are usually reserved for students come from out of town who need a safe place, comfortable, and the location close to the university. Therefore, University of Medan Area is planned to develop a male dormitory design, after previously built a female dormitory. This design aims to realize a student dormitory as an economical residence, suitable to be occupied and have a symbiotic relationship between the residents and the surrounding environment.

In this case, the theme of tropical architecture has been chosen because this student dormitory is in a tropical climate, so this theme is considered suitable for solving problems that occur in tropical climates such as by optimizing lighting and ventilation, paying attention to thermal comfort, and using the right material. In addition, the chosen concept of mass is the duplication of existing female dormitory grids with the aim of creating conditions in the student dormitory complex that have harmonious harmony.
