Madhubani Paintings Madhubani paintings, also called as Mithila Paintings are folk art form from the Mithila region of Indian states of India (Bihar) and Nepal. This beautiful art form got its name from the place it originated; Mithila regions or Madhubani Village of Mithila region. Until the decades of 60s, Madhubani/Mithila paintings were made
MARCH 2016 by the women from Brahman and Kayastha families. However, Godna and Gobar style of Madhubani painting was done by women who belonged to Dalit and Dushadh families. Modern days, there is no caste barrier in making Madhubani paintings. It is believed that the Madhubani paintings originated when the king of Janak (present day Janakpur in Nepal) hired women to paint on the mud walls with in celebration of the marriage of his daughter Sita with Ram. These paintings were done with mud and cow dung (Gobar). The Kohbar (Nuptial Room) was
MARCH 2016 decorated by Madhubani paintings. Traditionally, these were depicted as bamboo, birds, fishes, lotus, snakes etc. in union. These images represented fertility and proliferation of life. Even today, the custom of Kohbar is celebrated in many marriages in the Indian states of Bihar. Tools used to make these paintings:
Fingers Twigs Pens Match sticks Toothpicks etc. Modern days, people use pens and markers too.
MARCH 2016 Medium:
 Natural dyes and pigments; such as extracts from flowers, leaves etc.  Modern days, people use Acrylic paints, watercolors etc. Patterns:
The most beautiful part of this painting style is that with the use of simple Geometrical patterns, Madhubani/Mithila Paintings take a magnificent composition. With the use of simple designs like circle, triangles, squares, dots, zig zags, lines etc.,
MARCH 2016 the stories from the Hindu Mythology or the festivals and even important events like child birth are depicted. This art form is more like a celebration of life but in the simplest of ways. Traditionally, Madhubani paintings were done on freshly plastered mud walls, but nowadays they are also made on cloth, paper and canvas. Styles of Madhubani Art:
 Bharni (filling the Work with bright colors)  Katchni (filling the work with fine lines)
MARCH 2016 Tantrik (The subjects are based on religious texts and characters related to them; such as Goddess Kali, Durga, Saraswati, Lakshmi, Ganesh etc.) Godna (Tattoo is known as Godna. These paintings were made of circles of flowers, fields, animals, leaves, trees etc. The themes were from daily activity and rural practices) Gobar (The paper was washed with cow dung; which is called Gobar in Hindi; and the paintings were done using earth colors)

About the artist: I started exploring this beautiful art form in the year 2013. I am from Bihar-Jharkhand region of India and I always had the strong affinity towards learning this art form. So I started to teach myself by practicing Madhubani inspired designs and patterns using pens and Markers and Acrylic paint. The best part of this art form is, that it is a very meditative and addictive art form. Once I started with madhubani paintings, there has been no stopping. Now I love to create Madhubani inspired works for several themes and concepts. The
MARCH 2016 madhubani designs simply enhance any painting that I work on.
