Artisans of Dorset An advertorial & documercial series for the artisan communities in Dorset, United Kingdom
Photography by Srinath G M
FOREWORD “Artisans of Dorset” is a photographic journey to discovering the hidden artisan communities of Dorset county in Southwest England. The landscape of this county has been shaped for nearly 8000 years by the farming & fishing communities who raise, grow and create the finest quality food & drink to feed their families. The beautiful coastline of Dorset has also influenced artists, jewellers, designers and ceramicists for generations. It is evident the county is proud of its heritage as it continues to make, bake and invent products that impress the global citizens. Photographs produced under this title serve as a link to connecting artisan communities to a larger pool of audiences and documenting some interesting and meaningful aspects of artisan businesses has led me to produce ‘brand narrative’ outputs. Effective visual communication is the key and this factor was established by framing a singular context and a wellconstructed narrative to the project. Extensive visual research was undertaken to relate the subjects, their work and environment to the chosen narrative. Contemplating the image making process from the perspective of the intention and responding to the output to examine what is actually obtained, it’s vital the photograph interprets the same intentions with the audiences. A strong level of aesthetic continuity is maintained in terms of lighting, colour and tonal ranges. Images produced in this series can individually or collectively work as a narrative when presented. The project’s outcome is largely a reflection of self-directed brief. The aesthetics are managed in this series to link the era gone by to the present day scenario. The aim is to make the viewers think the future is “Artisan Business”. Subjects featured in this project are the actual makers of these artisan products. Efforts were taken to document subjects in their actual working environment as closely as possible to bring out the existing truth and reality and avoid debates that relate to notions of truth and authenticity. Exploring the individual elements of the produced images made using certain aesthetics can be studied for its role and function to build a presentable narrative. Subjective thought processes can be explored by artisan business owners to increase their brand visibility in the competitive marketplace by translating these photographs into successful adverts by using appropriate signs, symbols and texts.

Artisans of Dorset is a photographic project where I chose to document the works and lives of artisans in Dorset. Advertorial and documercial images produced in this series highlight on various artisanal values. The images if modified in to adverts will provide better visibility status to artisan businesses in the existing marketplace. I travelled across the county, interviewing business owners and chose the ones who could justify the term ‘artisan’. An idea to include businesses and people in the landscape of this county led to the birth of this project.

This project is a response to my past photographic projects done on a commercial level to promote the products made by artisans in India. I will continue to document more artisans on a personal level and with the help of agencies, internet and social media, I would like to create a resurgence in artisan businesses and encourage the urban masses to purchase more responsibly.
