JONATHAN DATTILO, MD

Dr. Dattilo is a board-certified orthopedic surgeon specializing in minimally-invasive anterior total hip replacement and knee replacements. Originally from Cincinnati, Ohio, he pursued his medical degree at Johns Hopkins University. He then completed his orthopedic training at the University of Pennsylvania, followed by an additional year of sub-specialized training in Washington, DC before he was recruited to join the astounding team at Coastal Orthopedics. He continues his academic pursuits to offer his patients the best care. He has authored 50 publications and is currently using virtual reality to teach surgeons how to perform anterior hip replacements. Dr. Dattilo has published numerous articles on pain protocols to minimize narcotics after surgery. These efforts greatly assist him in offering world-class care to patients in Sarasota and Manatee counties.

TELL US A LITTLE ABOUT YOUR PRACTICE.

I believe in developing relationships with patients. I have an individualized discussion with each patient about how pain is affecting their life. I offer comprehensive management, including medications, injections, therapy, and surgery, and we discuss what is right for them. If they pursue surgery, my philosophy is like anything else in life, the more you prepare, the easier it is. We develop a personalized pain protocol and tailor the therapy to meet each person’s goals. Every aspect of care is scheduled so that when the patient returns home, the only thing they are focusing on is their new joint replacement.

HOW DOES YOUR PRACTICE HELP TO IMPROVE THE LIVES OF YOUR PATIENTS?

Hip and knee replacements are extremely successful in improving the quality of a person’s life. It is an investment in yourself to return to the activities that you love. I ask every patient to pick an activity or a goal prior to surgery. After surgery, we individualize the therapy to ensure that we are moving forward in achieving that goal. The most rewarding part of my profession, which is truly humbling, is when people give me pictures of them hiking, biking or playing with their grandchildren because they are so excited that they have a new lease on life.
