Future of AV - innovative, flexible, sustainable What is the latest in audio, visual and lighting technologies or what is round the corner that the audience can expect or look forward to while sitting in an auditorium, automobile, a stadium, a live concert, a campus cafetaria, the mall or a conference room?
4k will also be a boon for data presentations in the corporate world as the inherent advantages of greater visual detail will far outweigh other considerations. Eventually, with time, non-cinema venues will catch up with multiplexes and home theatres.
Video
Audio
When it comes to video the world is inexorably moving towards 4k projection. If hitherto, 2k (1920x1080) was the holy grail then commercial cinema has raised the bar and home theatre too is falling suit. With four times the number of pixels (3840x2160) 4k is closest to 35mm film, or to believe some, digital surpasses film!
Multichannel digital surround sound has been a greater challenge for non-cinema venues to adopt. While luxury automobiles and corporate boardrooms do boast 5.1 or even 7.1 surround sound the impracticality of its application at other venues has meant lack of content and hardware deployment.
Expect 4k to gradually get deployed in commercial spaces as the content, media storage and streaming devices are being developed. Advertising will benefit the most from razor-sharp imagery, richer palette of colours and greater visual detail. More than farfield sightlines like stadium and live concerts, it is the nearfield applications like shopping malls, airports, theme parks and even multipurpose venues that will be early adopters given that commercial advertising, as always, will drive this digital signage initiative.
Commercial cinema too has been stuck on 5.1 for more than a decade now with very less content and infrastructure for 7.1. More channels have been added with very less success. Current experiments continue with BarcoAuro 11.1 or 13.1 with height channels embedded in the front and/or the roof. This too is not discrete but matrixed by extracting info from existing 5.1 or 7.1 content. None of this is expected to flow to non-cinema. Stereo will reign supreme and at the most 5.1/7.1 may get deployed in controlled environments like an auditorium.
Lighting One of the biggest changes will be seen in the world of lighting as LED slowly but surely takes over. LED has the unique ability of being hugely flexible and hence can get into the skin of things right from the floor to seating to furniture to the traditional location of walls and ceilings. LED can change colours the way cool or warm white cannot. LED enables more focussed, taskbased approach and hence one can expect less of ambient lighting and more of discrete islands. Above all, the driver will be energy savings as neither is electricity wasted in heat not is much required to power the LED light fixtures.
Controls Mobiles and tablets are making touchscreen technology ubiquitous. Prices are crashing and alongwith improved resolution and tactile, touchscreen controls will be all over the place, from the remote to the console to the front panel and everything else in between. Innnovative, lightweight, flexible, sustainable - these are the mantras that will govern the future of technologies. See them and meet us at the Infocomm Roadshows!

JBL HiQnet Performance Manager provides a comprehensive, step-bystep workflow that directly corresponds to real-world system configuration, taking the workflow paradigm introduced in System Architect 2 to a higher level of functionality for any live performance audio application. It is fully integrated with JBL's Line Array Calculator II loudspeaker configuration and acoustic modeling software. The user begins by loading templates of the speaker arrays used in the system, and then runs Line Array Calculator II for each array as part of the initial sound design task of determining how many and which type of loudspeakers are required to cover a given venue. For each array, Performance Manager automatically loads the passive VERTEC or powered VERTEC DrivePack DPDA line array configuration into the main application workspace - the first of many automated design processes native to the software application. Loudspeakers can also be manually loaded into the templates if desired. Once the user defines the required amplifier parameters for the passive loudspeakers within the arrays, Performance Manager automatically loads the correct number of Crown Audio VRACK or other userdetermined amplifier racks into the audio system. The software then associates the amplifier outputs with the bandpass crossover inputs for the selected array and programs the amplifiers with the correct JBL preset data, as well as gain shading and JBL Line Array Control Panel equalization
Representations of the bandpass inputs for each loudspeaker section are overlaid onto the arrays, enabling the user to easily visualize the array configuration, whether JBL DrivePackpowered or driven by external Crown power amplifiers. Performance Manager software also significantly simplifies system-networking configuration - the user can simply drag and drop devices discovered on the network onto the pre-configured devices within the Performance Manager workspace to synchronize all addressing and parameter values. In addition, the Performance Manager graphical interface provides embedded control panels for array calibration, time alignment and system EQ which utilize input section digital signal processing resources available in either Crown ITech HD power amplifiers or JBL DrivePack-powered loudspeakers with DPDA digital audio input modules. Input attenuation, equalization, delay settings and bandpass controls are all readily accessible directly within the main application workspace along with flexible grouping and comprehensive solo/mute functionality for system testing. Once system tuning is complete, Performance Manager's Show Mode display is optimized for the actual live performance, offering appropriate adjustment control ballistics for equalization and dedicated monitoring interfaces for levels, speaker loads, thermal conditions and AC power requirements. The workspace for all stages of Performance Manager's workflow has a common design motif, with monitoring functions overlaid on top of the same loudspeaker bandpass representations within the workspace, making visualization easier and more consistent across various workflow screens.

Eon515xt Portable Pa Loudspeakers For some, music is an escape from reality. For others, it provides a road back to reality. For Gabriel the Gun, it's been both. Co-founder of the skapop band No Doubt with star Gwen Stefani, Gabriel has been through his share of adventures. To tell his story, Gabriel relies on Harman's JBL EON515XT portable PA loudspeakers while traveling to Los Angeles school districts with the hopes of steering students from the dangers of a lifestyle he was lucky to survive. "We started touring with No Doubt in 1986 and I got into substance abuse in a big way," Gabriel said. "It wasn't until I was flat on my back in an ICU hooked up to all types of monitors
and machines, that I knew I had to change my life. I thought of my own kids and how my actions reflected on them and vowed to get clean. I took a 3-year sabbatical and straightened out my life. At that point I started to think of young musicians and how I could turn my mistakes into their success. I knew my destiny was to make a change in the world-maybe just one kid at a time." Eventually, Gabriel founded a 10-piece reggae/ska band with a jazz and soul influence called the BackBeat Brawlers. Gabriel said, "I believe that music heals and my epiphany was to serve society as an artist. And let's face it, we as humans are challenged daily by a multitude of bad situations and music helps people through hard times. The BackBeat Brawlers perform at inner city schools within the Los Angeles Unified School District. We play for the kids and then we get down to the business of the truth. At most clinics, artists discuss music theory, what scale to play within certain chords, but we talk about life on the road. And while we discuss substance abuse and the pitfalls of the addicted lifestyle, our main focus of discussion is on all the great things that music and the arts provide." Gabriel explained the need to have an audio system that is self-reliant and easy to travel with. "When looking for speakers that would fit our needs, I went right to JBL knowing their reputation for being the best," he said. "The message we want to convey is one of positivity, creativity and the soul-enriching power of music. We needed speakers that were equal in sound to the strength of that message. The choice was a no-brainer. The logistics behind traveling with a 10piece band are difficult, and the JBL EON515XT speakers make our new road life less complicated. They are awesome sounding, easy to transport and the setup is a breeze." PMC-3SM and TPMC-3SMD" I am so excited by the change that we have created in schools and communities," Gabriel concluded. Digital Power Factor Correction Analog Devices, Inc. (ADI), a global leader in high-performance semiconductors for signal-processing applications. Analog has introduced the ADP1048, the first interleaved digital power factor correction (PFC) controller with highly accurate AC power metering capability. The interleaved (or dual-phase) ADP1048 uses conventional, continuousconduction-mode PFC techniques to reduce harmonic distortion. The ADP1048 can be configured as an interleaved design to reduce inductor size and replace the ACDC rectifier to improve efficiency in bridgeless boost mode. These techniques convert all signals to the digital domain and allow parameters to be adjusted and reported over a PMBus compliant interface, including accurate measurement of input voltage, current and power. More About the ADP1048 Interleaved Digital PFC Controller As with the ADP1047 single-phase controller, the ADP1048 interleaved PFC controller is easily programmed using an intuitive graphical-user interface (GUI), which enables customers to design and optimize their systems without the complex code programming required by alternative digital signal processor (DSP)-based devices. Designed specifically for high reliability AC/DC power-factor correction systems and motor control applications, the ADP1048 is suited to communications infrastructure, industrial and instrumentation systems, such as motor control, and high-power medical imaging applications. The ADP1048 can be frequency synchronized to eliminate "beat" frequency noise, or alternatively, the switching frequency spread spectrum feature can be enabled to further improve EMI. Key ADP1048 Features and Benefits Interleaved capability enables reduction in inductor and solution size and is suited to high-power-level PFC.
Flexible; digital-control-loop PFC enables optimized harmonic correction. True RMS AC metering capability provides high accuracy power measurement. GUI programmability promotes ease of use and reduces time to market. PMBus compliance allows a standardized system software interface.

Electro-Voice and Dynacord in the New Ntadium of Hallescher FC Completed in September, the 15,000plus capacity Erdgas Sportpark provides a home for Hallescher FCone of the most successful clubs in Germany's Regional League North. To provide high quality sound, the city of Halle commissioned construction firm GP Papenburg AG, which enlisted the assistance of ssm euromicron GmbH (Schkopau branch). Led by Hans-Dieter Lemke, a team from subcontracting company Studio Elektroakustik GmbH of Leipzig devised and installed a system that features 28 EVF-1152S/99-PIB loudspeakers systems from ElectroVoice to cover the grandstands, as well as five more for the playing area. A major challenge for the audio team from SEA Leipzig, led by project manager Hans-Dieter Lemke, was the tight schedule. After elaborating an acoustic design with the help of computer simulations conducted by Richard Merget of Bosch Communication Systems, the team set to work in July to assemble to control room equipment and install the stadium loudspeakers. After meticulous resting of the sound reinforcement system in the course of July and August, the system was measured acoustically by Richard Merget in time to be handed over to the building clients on September 15th. "In the course of the practical trials, the EVF systems completely convinced me with the transparency of their reproduction," said Lemke."The sound quality is really high and in terms of intelligibility the speech reproduction is simply excellent!" " In the VIP areas, too, Sea Leipzig relied on loudspeakers from ElectroVoice: six EVID 4.2 and two EVID 6.2 compact surface-mounted loudspeakers provide the requisite coverage. The system is driven by five Dynacord DSA 8805 power amplifiers: four for the stadium sound reinforcement and one for the VIP areas. A P64 digital audio matrix

Electro-Voice in the National Stadium, Bucharest For over 50 years, the National Stadium in Bucharest was the venue for all home matches of the Romanian national football team. In 2005, it was decided to tear the stadium down and construct a new one in its place. The new "Stadionul National," which was three years (from 2008 to 2011) in the making, is an ultra-modern, multifunctional arena designed for both major sporting events and concerts.
manager from Dynacord provides the overall control. In all, the stadium technicians have 12 kW of amplification at their disposal enough to satisfy the demands of every occasion. A Dynacord CMS 1600 mixer and a number of audio playback devices round off the audio equipment in the stadium's sound control room. As is usually the case with modern stadium installations, the sound reinforcement system in Halle is connected to the evacuation system. In case of danger, a voice alarm system takes over the control of the entire sound system - a solution that assures the simplest possible handling and fastest possible reaction in case of emergency. The measured acoustic values in the stadium not only satisfy the standards imposed on regional league clubs but also, in case the club wins promotion, those applicable to the third and second divisions as well. Visitors had their first experience of the new system at the opening match against Hamburg's prestigious HSV. "The spectators were unanimous in the view that the announcements and commentary were easily intelligible and that the music reproduction was powerful and of a very high quality," reports Lemke. "Overall, the opening match was a triumphant success to which the quality of the sound reinforcement contributed considerably."
Satisfying the very highest international standards, the stadium is capable of accommodating over 55,000 spectators, including 3,600 VIPs. If needed, the total capacity can be expanded to 62,000. The arena is the first in Romania to meet the highly exacting "elite stadium" standards for infrastructure laid down by UEFA, making it the first stadium in the country qualified to host the finals of international competitions. The first such event scheduled for the new stadium is the UEFA Europa League Final on May 9th, 2012. Among the most important criteria prospective "elite stadiums"' need to satisfy relate to their sound systems. Here the responsibility for ensuring compliance was entrusted to UTI INSTAL CONSTRUCT SA of Bucharest. After conducting simulations and comparisons, those responsible for the installation opted for an extensive Electro-Voice system. Key influences on their choice were the evenness of the coverage, the high level of intelligibility, the ability to supervise and control each loudspeaker cabinet
individually, and the numerous worldclass references Electro-Voice was able to provide. The equipment featured here includes 141 EVH-1152S hornloaded (models 64-PIB, 94-PIB and 66PIB) and 32 EVID 6.2 T compact surface-mounted loudspeakers. The installation is powered and processed by 40 CPS 4.10 power amplifiers and ten N8000 NetMax controllers with MI1, AO-1, DI-1 or DO-1 cards as well as CM-1 CobraNet network modules. Thanks to the IRIS-Net software employed here, a multitude of possibilities exist for the configuration, operation and supervision of the system. It is possible, for example, to create an interface tailored exactly to the needs of each user, in which all the most important parameters - such as the level, muting, or error conditions are clearly and intuitively laid out. Furthermore, if required, all the parameters of the installation can be accessed from a single central location, which considerably simplifies the commissioning, operation, and maintenance of the system. The powerful N8000 task engine - which supports even the most complex programming logistics - provides automatic redundancy switching between the main and ancillary control room matrices, which both exhibit dual redundancy. As a result of the free configurability of the N8000's DSP, it is possible, for example, to selectively manage announcements to different areas of the grandstand via both the ELA system and the central operational computer. A ducking function is also available to ensure that music volume drops to an acceptable level to allow intelligibility during announcements; the music returns seamlessly to its previous level once the announcement is complete. The entire loudspeaker processing is also handled by the N8000. CPS multichannel amplifiers are used to drive the EVH loudspeakers, and offer a comprehensive safety-switching package, the possibility of supervising the impedance of the connected loudspeaker enclosures, remote control via an optional RCM-810 module, and Variable Load Drive. All add up to make CPS multi-channel
amplifiers the ideal solution for projects of this kind. "The selected loudspeakers represent the best solution due to their high level of intelligibility and the ability to control and supervise every cabinet individually," says Cristian Gheliuc of Prosound Solutions Romania. "I am also an absolute fan of the NetMax N8000 controller. It is simple to install and offers excellent user interfaces, with endless send, receive, and tuning possibilities." The installation has met with the complete satisfaction of the National Arena managers. "Our client is totally delighted and full of enthusiasm for the outstanding acoustic quality," Gheliuc adds. "This is the first major project of its kind in Romania and this installation now represents the standard to which all future stadiums in the country will aspire."
connections–thus enabling redundancy rings that increase the failure-safety of the discussion system. "With our new cascadable power supply unit, the ADN PS, we are one of the few manufacturers who enable their customers to create systems with high failure-safety," explained Jens Werner, Product Manager for Conference Systems. In such a system, the power supply unit provides power in two ringcabled lines to 20 discussion units each. If a cable fails in one redundancy ring, operation continues without interruption via the other cable path. If a decision is made in favour of an alternative cabling–branch or daisy chain - one ADN PS can power 4 x 15 discussion units. The cable topology in each case is displayed by status LEDs on the power supply unit. Up to 15 ADN PSunits can be cascaded. Software update
Power Supply Unit and Software Update for the ADN The ADN PS power supply unit is now available for Sennheiser's ADN conference and discussion system. The power supply unit also offers the possibility of using redundant ringcabling (redundancy rings), thus increasing the failure-safety of the system. At the same time, the audio specialist is releasing a free software update that expands the system's performance: the new software now enables conferences to be recorded and adds a PTT mode and effective acoustic feedback suppression to the system The ADN PS power supply unit features double conference
The new upgrade now makes it possible to record a conference directly onto a USB mass-storage device or an external hard drive. Each microphone and the sum of all microphones are recorded as separate files. A particularly user-friendly feature is the new Push-to-Talk mode; the microphone remains in operation as long as the speaker keeps the microphone button pressed. The ADN CU1 The ADN CU1 central unit in a new design–the luxurious anthracite finish attractively complements both modern and classic conference environments. A special mode for acoustic feedback suppression, which uses an algorithm specially developed by Sennheiser. "Very difficult acoustic environments often make it impossible to set a sufficiently high volume level without feedback," explained Jens Werner. "Even if the system is already operating at its limits, this new mode enables the volume to be increased even further." The mode can be activated in two stages, thus providing higher gain before feedback of up to3 dB and 6 dB respectively. The feedback reserve can be set separately for the discussion unit loudspeakers and an external PA system. January-March 2012

Unique Twist to New Shure KSM353 Shock Mount provide the isolation. In place of the traditional elastic bands or rubber orings found in most shock mounts, the A300SM employs wire rope.
Shure Incorporated unveiled an innovative new shock mount for its KSM353 ribbon microphone that uses advanced materials and design to deliver excellent isolation with a refreshing dose of style. The accessory was shown at the recent Audio Engineering Society conference in New York. More than 18 months in development, the mount had to provide exceptional isolation, securely mate to the microphone, and complement the simple metallic styling of the KSM353 ribbon microphone. The KSM353's 1.5pound weight and lack of a secure attachment point posed distinct challenges to achieving these goals. "Shock mounting a heavy microphone is a delicate balancing act," said Chad Wiggins, Director of Wired Microphones at Shure. "If the support straps are too compliant, the mount is floppy and bottoms out. If they're too tight, the mount won't isolate well. And, for a ribbon

Wolf Trap Modernizes its Loudspeaker System The most important cultural centers are Wolf Trap National Park for the Performing Arts. The main venue of wolf trap was Filene Center, a uniquely beautiful and architecturally distinctive 7,000-seat indoor/outdoor theater that is host to an average of 90 performances a year from major and local artists. The center has opened in 1984; the rebuilt Filene Center II recently upgraded its aging delay loudspeaker system with Harman's JBL Vertec VT4886 subcompact line array elements and VT4883 subcompact line array subwoofers. Snyder says that "the First, the speakers had to fit within the existing space, and the management would not allow the new speakers to intrude upon the design of the theater, meaning they could not be placed anywhere other than the alcoves for the previous speakers, which are extremely limited for a modern line array. Secondly, that the lack of available power precluded the use of powered speakers and limited our amplification options. Also, we were looking to upgrade as economically as possible, which made the use of existing wiring desirable. Basically, the fewer the amplifier channels we needed to use, the better. In the end we were able to implement this system with just five circuits per bay." The coverage requirements of the Wolf Trap Theater also presented a challenge. "We needed an array which could provide substantial vertical coverage-over 30 feet of elevation-yet also had a relatively short throw range; about 120 feet was needed for this installation," Snyder noted. "The VT4886 line array elements proved to be ideal for this application. Their smaller size enabled us to put a large number of enclosures into each array, and we went with 9-element arrays in each of the six bays which cover the lawn area. The controlled axial shading of the VT4886 gave us the coverage pattern we needed."
"The cardioid coverage pattern of the VT4883 subwoofer also worked to our advantage, as we had to minimize low-end spill from the delay subs into the main pavilion area," Snyder continued. "The subwoofer's dispersion pattern enabled them to integrate well with the mains, even though they were physically separated rather than used as extensions of the main line arrays. "The lower weight of the VT4886 and VT4883 was also a big advantage, as we could easily hang all the speakers without making any major structural modifications." Snyder was able to go into the project with a high degree of confidence. "JBL was good enough to send out demo units for our evaluation before the install, and we also used JBL Line Array Calculator II speaker configuration and acoustic modeling software to help predict the response of the system. Once the speakers were installed, we did final tuning with the aid of SMAART and SIM measurement and analysis software. We were extremely satisfied with the results." "The Filene Center is a unique space and one of the best-designed venues in the country," Snyder concluded. "The JBL VERTEC line arrays turned out to be just what we needed for this project, and the improvement in sound quality is just what we'd hoped for."
renovation at the San Diego Civic Theatre, which in its 45-year history, has hosted some of the world's greatest talents, shows and musicals. Harman's JBL loudspeakers, along with Crown amplifiers and BSS processors, are part of the major retrofit at the city-owned, 2,967-seat performance venue. The new audio system, designed by WRL Sound Consultants, features two JBL PD5322/95 full-range loudspeakers and four JBL PD5322/64 full-range loudspeakers comprising the center cluster, supplemented by four JBL ASB6128 subwoofers. An additional four JBL PD5212/95 loudspeakers serve as delay fills for loge and balcony coverage. "There was an outdated system in the Civic Theatre before we came in," said Sound Image Project Manager, Mike Martin. "As far as retrofits go, it's always a challenge to install modern equipment with the existing structure, especially with the last update occurring more than 30 years ago. Projects like this are always a great test of an installer's mettle." To swap out the older system for the new one, an intricate pulley system was used to bring each piece down and their replacements up, with care to avoid disturbing the fragile space. The pulley system was originally installed during the 1990's to set up the previous loudspeaker system. "The new JBL loudspeaker system offers a completely improved level of sound quality," Martin continued. "This cutting-edge performance space required top-notch equipment to support the dramatic vocal and musical performances, and we were able to deliver that with JBL."

There were 20 each of Robe's new MMX Spots and LEDWash 300s, plus 20 ColorWash 575 AT Zooms, all supplied by Conversano (BA) based rental company International Sound, the largest such operation in southern Italy, and is owned by the Firulli brothers - Franco, Paolo and Gianni. The fixtures were positioned on three over stage trusses, together with some conventionals. The LEDWashes were used to illuminate an upstage backdrop, and the MMXs and ColorWash Zooms did all the main beam-work and fabulous effects. Paolo Firulli especially likes the vivid colours and dual graphics wheel of the MMX which is excellent for fine quality projections. The near silent movement of the lights is particularly important for theatre shows, and this was also the first time he had used them in a theatre venue. Commenting on the LEDWash 300s, Firulli likes the brightness, the 15 - 60 degree zoom and the smooth homogenised light source which has always been a feature and a strong point of Robe's LED ranges.

Shure Classic PBS Series in Austin City Limits Now in its 37th season, the PBS concert series Austin City Limits has captured an incredible variety of artists from every corner of the musical spectrum. Longtime audio director David Hough of originating station KLRU-TV, Austin PBS, notes that one constant across those decades of television's longestrunning music series has been the use of Shure microphones. "For all 37 years I have been with Austin City Limits, we have always had Shure vocal mike downstage, and they have always worked great," Hough recalls. "I remember when we shot the pilot; the fellow we rented the PA system from brought a bunch of scratched-up Shure mikes he had been using. We wanted a good look for television, so he hand-painted them with white epoxy paint. It was a different look, but of course they sounded fabulous. The SM58 is still one of our go-to vocal mikes today. When you think about it, that's pretty amazing." While the SM58 remains a constant, virtually everything else in the production of today's Austin City Limits is, as one would expect, thoroughly up to date. Taping has moved from Studio 6A at KLRU to a new venue, ACL Live at The Moody Theater, a state-of-the-art facility with great sightlines and more seating capacity for what has always been one
SS

of the hottest tickets in Austin. Typically, the station does between 18 and 20 tapings to create the 13 onehour shows that comprise a season. "We've moved with the times, of course, and that includes our choice of microphones," Hough explains. "With the new venue four miles from our studios, we knew we needed new mike stock to go with it. Shure has a wide selection of products that really help us capture the sound and flavor of the concerts we're taping." Among the new models that have found a home on the new stage is the Beta 181, a compact side-address condenser microphone that Hough tried on drum overheads. "I used it on Flogging Molly, one of the first tapings in the new venue," he notes. "I have been using it ever since. The sound is clear, and they just disappear on camera because they are so small." The focus of nearly all bands rests squarely on the vocals, and Hough leans toward the dynamics that have been a mainstay throughout his career. "Of course, we try to let the bands sing on what they're most comfortable with," he shares, "but our go-to mikes are the Beta 58A and SM58, hardwired, especially with loud monitors and PA. The new KSM9 is a sweet-sounding vocal mike, too." Like most television productions, Austin City Limits prefers to keep wireless use to a minimum. The production keeps a couple channels each of Shure UHF-R Series handhelds and PSM 900 personal monitors on hand, but generally allows the artist to use the RF systems they are carrying. As conservative as that may sound, David Hough doesn't hesitate to try unconventional uses of his tools. To avoid the use of lavalier mikes for backstage interviews, the SM89 shotgun mike or VP88 stereo mike might be used on or behind the camera. Pre-show audio glitches are typically identified and addressed with the phase reversers, transformers, attenuators, and other problemsolvers in the Shure A15 Series. In fact, Hough is confident that his collection of Shure products will provide a solution to whatever production challenges he faces.
Barco SIM 7Q Projectors upgrade for Ford's Visualization pioneer Barco announced that its SIM 7Q simulation projectors will be used to upgrade Ford's VIRTTEX (VIRtual Test Track Experiment) advanced simulator to provide enhanced image rendering capabilities for use in testing active safety features for its automobiles. In concert with Blue Newt Software's image generation and software development tool kits, Barco's solution delivers an extremely realistic cardriver simulation to assist in Ford's development of a collision avoidance system. VIRTTEX opened in 2001; Ford has completed numerous driver distraction studies, in addition to evaluations of teen driving, driver drowsiness and a pedestrian warning assessment, among others. All of these studies have led to the development of technologies, vehicle features and programs designed to improve vehicle and occupant safety, such as head-up displays, driver drowsiness alerts, lanedeparture warnings and more. The VIRTTEX simulator features a spherical dome mounted on a hydraulic system to duplicate vehicle movement. Seven Barco SIM 7Q QXGA LCoS projectors comprise a display system that covers a 360-degree horizontal and 45-degree vertical field-of-view (FOV), mounted to a mechanical structure on the Ford motion base. The projectors surround the driver to display scenery, terrain, and various traffic situations synched to the test car's acceleration, braking and steering functions. Blue Newt Software, Inc., an industry leader in high-fidelity, highperformance networked simulation software, provided the image generator engine and software development tool kits which model dynamic illumination; multiple, realtime shadow casters; the pixel-accurate sky dome; weather models; and other realistic visual effects for the simulation system. The company's highly advanced rendering technologies integrate with a
manufacturer's legacy data to enable them to easily and cost-effectively leverage advanced applications and models as new technologies and techniques are developed. "Once a manufacturer subscribes to our visual technology platform, they enjoy a perpetual migration path with access to the most modern, sophisticated visual renderings as they become available," commented Robert Kuehne, Owner and President of Blue Newt Software. "This allows them to always be on the cutting edge of immersive simulation and provide the most realistic user experience. One of the most important capabilities Ford required was the lighting component, which we're one of the first to address in the industry. Barco's SIM 7Q projectors - which feature lamp-based projection, the brightest illumination source available are designed specifically for use in multi-projector, high-speed motion simulators. Numerous features, such as DynaColo, Linked Constant Light Output, Warp geometry distortion technology, and optical edge blending, combine to deliver razor sharp, no-smear images and a smooth, continuous FOV with consistent color and luminance matching between channels. The SIM 7Q's smear reduction technology enables superior visualization of terrain details and road signs during continuous vehicle simulator operation at driving speeds. The system was designed using Barco's SimCAD tool which accurately models the behavior of light to perform resolution, luminance and shadow analysis with high precision, reducing the risk of non-compliant performance while facilitating fast, smooth installation.

DiGiCo SD10 at 54th Annual Monterey Jazz Fest McCune Audio / Video / Lighting have been handling the audio services for the acclaimed Monterey Jazz Fest since the 1960's. In business since 1932, this full service technical event production company has done its share of myriad events in its nearly 80-year history. They purchased their first DiGiCo, an SD10, and the console made its debut at the 54th Annual Festival this past September. "We purchased the console for its flexibility, features, and sound quality," said McCune VP, Mike Neal, "and were excited to get it out to the festival this year. The system includes the SD10 surface with HMA Optics and 3 of the D-Racks (32 x 16) that can operate at 48 or 96 kHz so that we can easily deploy these stage racks where they are needed on a particular show. The console has exceeded our expectations and we're looking forward to using it on a variety of events we have coming up in the near future." The SD10 handled FOH duties at the Dizzy's Den stage, with the weekend fare including interview segments during the day and bands in the evening-with live highlights from such names as John Pizzarelli, Donny McCaslin, Wil Blades, and Hiromi. San Francisco State University graduate and McCune engineer Dunning Butler, who hadn't worked on a DiGiCo console previously, was able to get his hands on the desk a few days pre-event. "Up until this point, we have been utilizing Yamaha digital consoles such as the LS9, M7 and the PM5D, as well as Midas analogue consoles. The board arrived at our shop only a few days before we had to load trucks, so I was able to have some time on the system prior to the festival. I didn't need to use the offline software this time around, although I definitely will in the future. I made that call because the SD10 was new to me and I wanted to get as much hands-on time before the MJF as I could. Programming the SD10 was great experience. Obviously there was

a learning curve as there is on any new system, but its OS system is very well thought out. They did a great job making the presets applicable to the entire console and the macro functions are absolutely genius. I did not need use any external gear at all…not even a system processor! Not that I recommend others do that, but we were just able to get it done with the onboard EQ's and in this particular instance, it worked well." During some of the interviews, including a conversation with Clint Eastwood and HBO "Treme" star, Wendell Pierce, Butler handled source material coming from video decks and also a record feed. "The room was very tubby sounding, so I asked one of our other senior audio engineers, Nick Malgeri, who had mixed in that room in previous years to come help tune the PA. After it was tuned to our satisfaction I was very pleased with the results. I found the audio quality of the SD10 to be the best that I've heard coming from a digital console." One feature Butler found himself utilizing quite a bit during the
weekend was the SD10s macro keys. "I set up one key for every FX rack and another that flipped the board into 'sends on fader' mode. I also colorcoded the keys Red for 'Off' and Green for 'On' with different names for each mode on the same switch. This made it very easy for guest engineers to jump on without a sound check, and start getting a mix together quickly." In retrospect, Dunning had nothing but a positive experience with the SD10 on his very first outing at the Monterey Jazz Fest. "I actually never had a moment the entire weekend where the board stumped me. I spent a lot of time anticipating what would be needed for the show and that influenced how I programmed the board ahead of time. When we first got the SD10, DiGiCo National Sales Manager Matt Larson gave me a tour of the console in person, and showed me his take on how to improve workflow, manage sessions and how to prepare for certain live situations. It really helped me immensely prepare for the hectic pace of the festival."

Electro-Voice Sound Systems Training in Bangkok Electro-Voice (EV) held its first Concert Sound Systems Training in Bangkok on the 28th and 29th of November. The two-day session was attended by most of the Bosch ProSound employees in Asia, and existing EV line-array loudspeaker users. New XLine user CenterPoint, kindly provided the venue for the event. CenterPoint, owners of the venue and also a touring company, chose Electro Voice X-Line and TG amplifiers as their main sound reinforcement system. QRX was further chosen for their monitoring and supplementary needs. The training was conducted by Phil Scobee, EV Product Manager for Concert Sound Systems, who has spent most of his career on the road with EV Line Arrays in the USA, most notably as Director of Operations for Morris Leasing, where he was responsible for Kenny Chesney's tour sound. Scobee has used EV X-Line and XLC systems at 60 of the largest stadiums in the U.S, and he shared his experiences with colleagues and friends in APR. The training covered system design, rigging, and configuration, as well as LAPS (Line Array Prediction Software) updates. X-Line was put through the paces. TG-series amplifiers were also effectively demonstrated, and attendees were awed by new FIR-Drive DSP settings for loudspeaker performance enhancement. "If I would close my eyes and listened, I wouldn't have guessed that it was the same loudspeaker system that I

Kordis Sound & Lighting at Bijou Nightclub Kordis Sound & Lighting recently upgraded the audio system at Bijou, a high-end club in Boston, Massachusetts, with a variety of Harman's JBL loudspeakers, immediately transforming it into one of the most state-of-the-art clubs in the city. With two main floors of entertainment, Bijou wanted to create two different atmospheres for its customers. The top floor system contains four Harman JBL Dance5 loudspeakers, two CBT4 loudspeakers, eight ASB7128 subwoofers, while the back room features four AC28/95 compact 2-way loudspeakers with two SRX718S subwoofers, with four Control 26C ceiling speakers in each of the two restrooms on the floor. The DJ booth includes JBL's EON515XT portable PA speakers with a PRX718S Powered subwoofer. Powering the top floor system are two Crown CTs 1200 amplifiers, two
CTs 3000, two MA-9000i, four MA12000i, two XTi 2000 and XTi 1000 amplifiers, plus one Crown 180A amplifier. The whole system was processed with a BSS BLU-160 signal processor. The bottom floor features six JBL AC28/26 compact 2-way loudspeakers, 12 AC18/26 compact 2-way loudspeakers, two AC28/95 compact 2-way loudspeakers, as well as four Control 26C loudspeakers for each of the two restrooms on the floor. There are also 16 JBL ASB6112 subwoofers distributed around the floor and ground area with an AC28/95 loudspeaker used for the DJ booth with a PRX718S subwoofer. Powering the system on the lower level are six Crown XTi 2000, four XTi 6000, and an XTi 1000 amplifiers, and a 180A amplifier for the restroom. When deciding on which loudspeakers would fit the environment, Greg Kordis of Kordis Sound & Lighting cited JBL's ease of installation, sound quality and affordability. "The Dance5's have the nightclub levels that Bijou was looking for to turn it into a premier club," Kordis said. "The ASB7128's were chosen because they fit perfectly into the size of the cabinets that hide them, while still delivering quality sound. The horsepower on this system is like no other, it had the room bumping without even breaking a sweat." There were many challenges that arose during the installation. At first, there were difficulties with acoustics and having the sound trapped between walls and furniture. "We dealt with this by using an assortment of smaller, AC Series speakers rather than using a few larger ones. With low ceilings in a small space, this ended up working perfectly to create the atmosphere and feeling that Bijou wanted," Kordis said. "Bijou is very pleased with the new system, and they're looking forward to a great future with JBL," Kordis concluded. "The sound is excellent and keeps people dancing and partying all night long."
'Theatre of Nations' Powered by C Series As part of a massive 5-year renovation project that culminated in a starstudded opening ceremony recently. Moscow's premier playhouse, the 'Theatre of Nations', has been equipped with an APG loudspeaker system. Designed, supplied and installed by Russian pro audio and lighting specialists, Doka Center, who also supplied the fully motorized lighting and staging systems, the main audio system is based around APG's versatile DS Series loudspeakers, and is powered by Lab.gruppen C Series amplifiers. The Theatre of Nations is described as a unique structure within the system of Russian theatre with a wide-ranging palette of activities including its own original productions. Korsh theatre which was built in the year 1885 and the land were belonging to the millionaire Bakhrushin, merchant family. The reopening of the historic venue was marked by a visit from Russian Prime Minister, Vladimir Putin. In accordance with an old theatre tradition, Putin was asked to hammer into the stage a silver ruble minted in the year the theatre was founded. The renovation has been hailed as a success by all concerned, actors and suppliers alike. Doka Center's head of sound, Sergei Yurchenko, said, "For the Theatre of Nations we decided on a main system based around DS15s around the proscenium arch because it's an extremely versatile cabinet with a lot of flying/hanging options, and it offers superb sound reproduction. We opted for the compact MX1 for delays and fills." The flexible C Series of four-channel and eight-channel amplifiers couple a space saving power-to-size ratio and high channel density to superb sound quality, continuous reliability, and a comprehensive six-year warranty. All models include facilities for the individual adjustment of maximum voltage peak output and gain per channel, as well as bridge-mode operation selectable per channel pair for maximum versatility in channel
output configuration, and most efficient distribution of available power. Advanced NomadLink networking with remote monitoring and control facilities comes as standard, allowing the end-user to configure all levels and powersequence each device remotely from the control room with ease. Filling the amp racks at the Theatre of Nations are eight C Series amplifiers three 8-channel C 10:8X, and three C 16:4 and two C 28:4 (both traditional 4 channel models). Augmenting the C Series is three of Lab.gruppen's ubiquitous FP+ Series - commonly found in touring applications - used on this occasion to power the subs, thanks to their high power density over 2-channels, perfect for driving low-frequency enclosures.

Gearhouse Invests in Robe LEDWash 60 Gearhouse South Africa (GHSA) is one of the largest and most significant technical production companies in the southern hemisphere. GHSA has purchased 72 Robe Robin 600 LEDWashes to add to its rental stock, which already includes a substantial amount of Robe moving lights, over 250 in total, which are a mix of ColorSpot and Wash 2500E ATs and 700E ATs and LEDWash 3.192s. They also have around 24 CitySkape 48 LED washes, 16 CitySkape Xtremes. These are distributed amongst Gearhouse SA's three facilities - their HQ in Johannesburg and branches in Cape Town and Durban. The new LEDWash 600s are also divided similarly. Stuart Andrews, Lighting Operations Manager for the Johannesburg branch, says,"They are fantastic products, and I have wanted to be able to offer them to our clients since the first demo I saw, just after their launch about a year ago". The lights were supplied to GHSA by Robe's South African distributor DWR. Stuart confirms that LED wash moving light fixtures are becoming increasingly common on specifications, and are being requested by many LDs, so they are responding to market demand. "They are bright and versatile, and like all Robe products, proving very reliable," he confirms. The energy efficient factor also played a part in the decision. With many clients endeavouring to make their events greener, lighting is an area where big reductions can be made in power consumption by using the right fixtures. Apart from that, there's also a considerable lower running cost advantage in using LED lighting, plus lower on-going maintenance costs. On the practical side, they are lightweight, easy to lift and put less stress on rigging requirements. Projects on which GHSA's LEDWash 600s have been working have included the COP17 Convention on Climate Change in Durban, lighting

Jean-Francois Zygel. The artists line up for the final included Italian opera singer Roberto Alagna, Anguun, France's 2012, Eurovision Song Contest hopeful and French jazz singer and guitarist, Thomas Dutronc. There was also a 90 piece orchestra. It was recorded in the large Euromedia Studio 217, at the Studios de France in Paris. The Robe equipment included 24 Robin MMX Spots, 40 ROBIN 600 LEDWashes, 14 ROBIN 300 LEDWashes and 16 Robin 600E spots, which, together with various other fixtures were spread out around the studio in the air and on the floor. Seligmann-Forest was brought
the LGP Pavilion area and fulfilling the brief for cleaner, greener light sources. They were also used on the recent South African leg of the Kings of Leon world tour; the high profile "46664 It's No Joke" comedy extravaganza at Emperor's Palace in Johannesburg, and also for a Johnny Clegg concert at the same venue. They have all been out on a corporate show for Castle Light at Gallagher Estates in Midrand, and Gearhouse also dispatched a quantity to Lagos for the launch of the new Christ Embassy evangelical church in the Nigerian capital.
Robe for La Grande Battle Lighting Designer and DOP David Seligmann-Forest from Lite4Life used Robe ROBIN MMX Spots, ROBIN 600E Spots and LEDWash 600s to light 'La Grande Battle', a live TV presentation aired on French network France 2. Ten major European stars from a diversity of musical genres - rock, pop, rap, flamenco, opera, brass band, etc. battled it out to win the final of this popular series for the best reinterpretation of classical songs and music. They were selected from over 300 bands by the public vote via the website. The event was hosted by popular TV presenter Nagui and classical musician
onboard to design the show's lighting by production company Banijay Productions, with whom he has worked on several previous projects. He is a great advocate of Robe products, and has been using the brand in his work for 10 years - since Robe first launched as a brand in its own right. A massive amount has happened in that time, and Seligmann-Forest has used most of Robe's new technologies as they have come on-stream. The newly launched Robin MMX was specified for La Grande Battle final because of the 8.5 - 46.5 zoom and the extremely bright beam, which he reckons is far more efficient than any competitor product in that range or even some of their higher powered fixtures. He also thinks the MMX Spot's gobos and dual animation wheel are excellent. Having all these Robe units at his disposal offered exactly the right creative tools to be able to light. The show was dynamically and differently for each different contestant and their performances.
Robe MMX and LEDWash Specified for European Film Awards Over 100 Robe moving lights, including the new Robin MMX Spots and Robin 600 LEDWashes were specified by lighting designer Andreas Fuchs for the 24th European Film Awards, staged at the Tempodrom in Berlin. The show - produced by the European Film Academy, presented by Anke Engelke was broadcast the following day on national channel ARTE and streamed live to more than 100 countries. It was attended by over 1000 VIP guests and recognizes excellence in European cinematic achievements. Awards are given in over ten categories of which the most important is the Film of the year, won by Lars von Trier's "Melancholia". The European Film Awards show featured 23 MMX Spots, 51 Robin 600 LEDWashes, 30 ColorSpot 700E ATs and 23 ColorWash 2500E ATs, all of which were distributed on overhead trusses with some on the stage floor. These - and all the other lighting for the show - were operated by Uli Weiss using a grandMA console. Good use was made of the MMX's dual graphic wheel to create sophisticated fluid texturing effects across the set and stage floor, while the LEDWashes were used to produce rich and full colour washes and fabulous colour mixes all over the stage. They also made much use of the LEDWash 600's good range of 'proper' whites, and pastels, which make superb skin tones.
Robe MMXs for Bryan Adams Tour The latest Bryan Adams tour is the first major one in the UK tour to feature Robe lighting's new 'ROBIN MMX Spots', as specified by lighting designer Ewan McRobb and supplied by the tour's lighting contractor, High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire, UK based Siyan. Robin MMX Spot is the first of Robe's next generation of 1200 series moving lights - and like its predecessors, is expected to become a workhorse lighting unit for multiple applications. The MMX Spot is considerably smaller, brighter and lighter and seriously more power friendly designed and built with the principals of greener technology to the fore. McRobb - who has worked for superstar rocker Adams, has shown the MMXs when initially discussing the tour with Siyan's Nick Valdez, who had just taken delivery of some of Robe's newest technology. McRobb liked what he saw and decided to spec twelve MMXs onto the tour. McRobb needed really intense fixtures on the rig that were seriously bright enough to be able to hold their own against a large 24 metre wide by 9 high upstage Stealth screen, which creates the main look and defines the visual spatiality of the stage. This was Adams' idea, and video mainly the raw, highly effective IMAG mix of video director Mathieu Coutu plus some playback - and a sparse looking stage underpins the show's aesthetics. The power of the music takes centre-stage bordered by a monochrome, edgy industrial look. McRobb's lighting compliments this very strong filmic aesthetic. As a photographer of some repute, Adams takes a keen interest in lighting and therefore also his stage lighting. "He has multiple ideas and knows exactly what he wants," explains McRobb, adding that Adams also fully appreciates the dramatic potential of lighting. The MMXs are spread out over the rig's four trusses and are used for general stage lighting, for key lighting the band and for some more specific
high-brightness effects. Also on the rig is a selection of other moving lights and generics, but overall it's not a large lighting set up for an arena show, and McRobb makes all fixtures - including the MMXs - work hard. He is really impressed with the performance of the MMXs, remarking "It's the first time I have properly used Robe in a design, and the brightness of the MMX is remarkable. They have no trouble at all in cutting through and contending with all the light coming off the screen," he comments, adding that he also likes the compact physical size of the units. This is also appreciated by his crew - Iestyn Thomas, Matt West, Karl Lawton and Chris Randall. He also remarks on the reliability of the MMX - a well-documented characteristic of Robe products to the delight of hire companies and touring techs alike! He realises that he's only scratched the surface in terms of utilising the features and functionality of the MMX so far - due to the nature of the show and the creative requirements of the lighting which is clean, direct and nothing complicated with gobos or mixed colours. "I'm definitely interested in using them again, and exploring and expanding my MMX horizons," he concludes. Bryan Adams is constantly touring and playing live on average about two weeks a month, a testament to his enduring popularity worldwide and is currently alternating between acoustic 'Bare Bones" concerts and a full band show which acknowledges 20 years since the seminal "Waking Up The Neighbors" album. The set includes several anthems from that work. January-March 2012

Time to multiplex the auditorium! - Sandeep Mittal
The advent of multiplexes in India at the turn of the century heralded a paradigm shift in the way movies were viewed so much so that it had a multiplier effect on two major industries – first the movie industry itself in the way movies were produced and distributed, so much so that movies began to be branded as multiplex movies for urban audiences that began patronising the multiplexes in large numbers and single-screen movies for the semiurban or rural audiences. And secondly, it impacted the retail industry, in the way multiplex patrons shopped and shoppers dropped by to watch movies, making multiplexes a magnet for footfalls to the mall, exponentially expanding the business. Something similar needs to happen in the unorganised, unprofessional world of auditoria (plural for auditorium). As of now the auditoria in India, even the best of them in the top cities, government or private sector, present a dismal picture. Exceptions are corporate auditoria housed in company campuses. But

public auditoria are much like their single-screen cousins! They are popular because of the history and heritage attached to them, having become city landmarks over time, and because audiences have nowhere else to go - the TINA factor – there is no alternative for live performances. So the upwardly mobile middle and upper classes have begun to shun them altogether except for die-hard fans of theatre, music and dance! Going to the auditoria for a live show has become very niche, very speciality … just for the arty class. It does not attract the sizeable population of middle and upper income classes since auditoria are not perceived as hip, happening places. Contrast this with Leicester Square in London or Broadway in New York where theatre is a craze and the experience includes downing a couple of pegs at the attached bar! Or consider the auditoria tucked into the hotels on Las Vegas’s strip that boast a variety of stage shows. Their backstage is an engineering marvel.
Why talk about developed countries? Let’s look at a comparable country like China. Again, India is far, far behind. There are auditoria constructed in port cities on the seashore wherein the back stage wall fully opens out and the real sea becomes a backdrop! Auditoria with membrane roofing that allows diffused natural light in during evening shows giving a outdoorsy ambience or even opens up to reveal the starlit sky! Stage engineering that rivals the Las Vegas auditoria with water, fire as regular props and stage floors that move horizontally, vertically and/or revolve! How bad are India’s auditoria? Nonexistent or inadequate parking space often on narrow roads that become a traffic nightmare at the start and end of shows, dimly lit exteriors with unpaved paths so a walk becomes a trek and a twisted ankle is not ruled out, broken seats with poor ergonomics that results in cramps, decrepit interiors with outdated ceilings and panellings, either poor acoustics or not in sync with modern audio, shabby stage sets, inadequate
• SPECIAL FEATURE • air-conditioning, stinking toilets etc. Food+beverageis contracted to an external agency and the concessions counter is an apology. The audio equipment, the original installation being in a state of perpetual disrepair, is substituted with high-quality rental loudspeakers that are stacked on either side of the stage with cables snaking all the way to the rear, where the mixer is plonked in the centre aisle. Exits, vital during a fire emergency, are routinely blocked. When will we wake up to this potential disaster? In short, an assault on the five senses except for the show itself which may be a delight.A show sells-out because of its superior content, not because the audience loves the auditorium, much like the single-screens that used to report house-full for popular movies. Auditoria are not winning new audiences and definitely not the younger generation that anyways is so difficult to glean away from any of the four screens they are perpetually glued too – mobile, laptop/tablet, television or multiplex! In fact today’s
auditoria are shooing away potential, high paying patrons that go for destination entertainment to the mallmultiplex, stadium or theme park. With so many options in home entertainment to get a patron of the comfort of their homes is in itself a challenge! Why do audiences today prefer swanky multiplexes? Why is it a booming business never mind the many duds at the box office? Because it is all so easy, convenient and comfortable … multiplexes please our five senses. Booking is online via mobile or laptop, parking is a cinch in multilevel carparks, the walk to the cinema a pleasure through the airconditioned mall or paved paths, the interiors so very contemporary, the food+beverage- though heavily westernised - presented in a glitzy ambience with engineered counters, the seating is modern with wide seats and plenty of legspace, toilets are autoflush and a pleasure, the whole technical design so very state-of-theart with the latest in sightline sciences, audio video, lighting etc. Only the bar is missing!
It is time auditoria got multiplexed! This will have its own multiplier effect on the socio-cultural scenario in India. It will impact the way shows are produced since upper class, urban patrons with deep pockets will be attracted. This will result in higher admission rates and more audiences per show which would mean more money all around. There is a rising number of aspiring middle class with generous disposable incomes and the auditoria industry, if it can be called one, must get real to plug in. This will also impact and improve the neighbourhood where such auditoria are located benefiting the secondary ecosystem. Being a service industry it will add to employment and bring India at par with developed countries. If we can flaunt the latest mobile, laptop, car and villa why can our visit to the auditorium also not be at par? It is time auditorium owners, that include a sizeable number in the government sector, set their house in order. Payback would be in terms of premium rentals and houseful audiences. It is also time show producers exerted pressure on the auditoria owner/operator community.

The operations are all being project managed by Colour Sound's Fletch, who ensures that each venue receives the quick, efficient, fuss-free service for which Colour Sound is renowned. He comments,"The key is to assess each space and design and deliver something appropriate and specific for the size and the entertainment being staged, and also offer a cost-effective solution to the client". All the systems have been programmed and set up for straightforward operation by the venue's lighting crew or DJs. Life is a 700 capacity nightclub right on the seafront with three arched spaces towards the back forming the main dance floor, which are lit dynamically with a rig including Robe Scan 575 XTs as the central moving light system.

ball over the bar at the front, which when lit, shoots shafts of light out onto the seafront! An Avolites Pearl - a favourite for installs of this type and size - is used for control. Coalition is a 500 capacity nightclub and live music venue, into which CSE
• INSTALLS • has installed eight Robe Scan 575s - a reliable, versatile product for club environments - plus six Atomic strobes, 24 PARs and three 600 milliwatt green lasers, all run by another Avolites Pearl. It was important to ensure that the lighting elements could double up to be used over the dance floor for club nights as well providing good stage coverage for live performers. They are rigged onto a series of scaffolding bars in the ceiling. The Tube is a cozy disco space in a prime seafront location. Lighting needed to be flexible and tough enough to deal with being in constant use. Fletch decided on six Robe Scanners, three 16 inch mirror balls for a bit of dancehall retro, complete with six pinspots, all controlled via a Pulsar Masterpiece. The control system also includes a Pulsar Outstation for the DJ to operate manually if desired, otherwise the lighting is designed to run without an operator using a set of preprogrammed sequences. The final club in the current Brighton project is Sticky Mike's Frog Bar which is in the South Lanes, a winding network of small, interesting streets leading down to the seafront. The venue has about 200 capacity, so again, lighting needed to be just right for a relatively intimate space which hosts bands and comedians as well as having a dancefloor. Currently there are 10 LED Zoom PARs and six classic disco effects run off a Pulsar Masterpiece. Small is beautiful! The lighting for all these venues has been installed by Colour Sound over the last 18 months. "We make a considerable effort to ensure that each club has a totally different lighting ambience and a proper design. We are also constantly reviewing the situation, seeing how the operation is running and ensuring that the kit stays relevant," says Fletch. He adds that one of the most important elements of long term installations is the build quality and reliability of the equipment, and this was an important factor in their choice of brands. They are used to create a dramatic white-out explosion for the Chaser's entrance, and then stunning undulating defocused background ripples while they complete their questioning session. This is set on a gentle chase and flickers almost imperceptibly. Twelve VARI*LITE V*L 3000 Spots are used for gobo breakup on the polished black floor. Another 16 vertically rigged BB4s follow around the line of the crescent screen about a metre higher than its top, and 20 silk tubes in five groups of four also grace its perimeter, each one up and down lit from the ends with a Satellite. Twenty-six Sunstrips follow the screen curvature at floor level, footlight style. HSL also supplied 24 lengths of festoon with clear bulbs, hung behind
the silk tubes ... creating an overall organic hint of showbiz. For Kinane, the key creative objectives for lighting are enhancing the drama as the competition unfolds and the potential prize money builds, ensuring the contestants are well lit - which he does with the aid of some very tight
key- lighting, and keeping it visually interesting and stimulating for viewers. He comments, "As always Sean at HSL has ensured that we have been brilliantly well looked after and that we get everything we need, quickly, efficiently and with no fuss".

Slovakian Legends of Pop Robe MMX Spots were among over 50 Robe moving lights supplied by Slovakia's top technical production rental company, Q-99, to lighting designer Martin Kubanka for STV1's new music series, "Slovakian Legends of Pop", aired live during Friday night prime time on national TV channel STV1. The 9-week Legends of Pop series was recorded at STV's studios in Slovak Republic capital Bratislava. It culminated in the presentation of songs from one of the most famous bands from the Czech/Slovak region, Elán, whose incredible forty year career went 'meteoric' back in the 1970s. Martin Kubanka is among Slovakia's leading television lighting designers in fact, a bit of a legend himself in his own field of work! He was asked to light the show on the strength of his long and illustrious track record. Taking the LED oriented set design by Michael Brna - which utilised three different types of LED - as a starting point, Kubanka needed some seriously powerful lightsources on the rig to hold their own amidst all the LED!
The MMXs were rigged above the midstage area, and were used to light the forestage areas with very bright beam and gobo effects. Kubanka made extensive use of the MMX's 8.5 - 46.5 degree zoom range and its iris features in addition to the gobos which he used sparingly and in a more theatrical style, particularly for the looks in which the LED surfaces were less prominent. Other Robe fixtures on the rig included 14 Colorwash 1200E ATs - six on the floor and eight in the air on the overhead trusses, all used as effects
lights. Twenty Robin 600 Beams in the roof made fabulous punchy down lights, and another 12 on each of three left and right set columns combined to provide some very striking cross stage beams, providing a highly visible contrast to the LED panels. For the closing scenes with Elán onstage, ten ColorSpot 575E ATs and four LEDBlinder 96s were also used for additional lighting. Even though it was not a massive rig, using all the latest Robe technology and his prodigious imagination, Kubanka managed to magic up an original look and feel for all the different performers appearing each week. "It's absolutely brilliant," he comments, "Having all this flexibility at my fingertips". Q-99's Marek Adamik comments, "We have used Robe for many years now, and from a rental company perspective its ideal as the kit is well made and very reliable. However, the latest ROBIN series, including the LEDWash 600 (Robe's biggest selling unit ever) and the MMX (the 'next generation' 1200 type series fixture) have really raised the bar …… and taken moving light technology to another level".

end Sennheiser wired and wireless microphones have also been used in the installation. For the video solution 3 nos Hitachi CP-X5021N projectors were used. Due to distance of the projectors from the control room, the integrators had to put in place a video distribution system that could transmit HDMI video signal for over 75 meters without any loss, so they decided to use a product called H-Dlight P 1000 which transmits the HDMI signal over optical fiber cable and then converts it back into HDMI signal at the receiver end. REVIEW
The 21st annual Broadcast India 2011 show opened its gates to the future of technology from October 20 to 22, 2011 at the Bombay Exhibition Centre in Mumbai. Broadcast India was back as a hit this year. Broadcast India is an exhibition dedicated to the rapidly evolving broadcast and entertainment industry in India and showcasing many of the world's leading companies with their latest technologies for the broadcast, film, 3D & Digital cinema, lights, animation, audio, radio, IPTV and mobile TV industries. 589 companies from 33 countries exhibited their state-of-the-art equipment and technology at this year's show. Some of the world's leading manufacturers like Panasonic, Sony, Avid, Harris, ARRI, Cartoni, Transvideo, Cooke, P+S Technik GmbH, Herman, Blackmagic Design, Autodesk, Christie Digital Systems, Orad, Canon, Cinectech, Datavideo, Wasp3D, Fujinon, Thomson Grass Valley, Panther, AJA Video Systems, RCS, Innovision Optics, just to name a few, On its conclusion after 3 days, both the exhibition and conference welcomed an unprecedented number of visitors from various fields of the entertainment industry, and recorded a 33% overall growth in
exhibition space, thereby making it the most well-attended and successful Broadcast India Show to date. During the show, Jacques Delacoux, president of Transvideo and Geoff Chappell international sales director Cooke presented the Ravi K. Potdar Award to the director of photography Mr. Ratnavelu (a.k.a Randy). The ace cameraman was chosen for the prestigious award for his outstanding contribution to the Indian Film industry. Mr. Rathnavelu is one of India's most sought-after cinematographers today. A meteoric career graph, combined with his unusual, often unconventional choice of films all have made him a much writtenabout cinematographer. Since 1991, the Broadcast India show is a clear manifestation of the limitless possibilities in the field of broadcasting and film technology and promises to carry into the future the commitment to contribute toward and boost the progress of the industry. It would be an incomparable experience that one would want be a part of.
