VOORWOORD Het sprekende lichaam Wij van Julidans doen, soms, aan introspectie. Waardoor is de ene voorstelling wel geschikt voor het festival, de andere niet? Wat willen we bereiken, en lukt dat? Waar staan we als festival eigenlijk voor? Een ding is duidelijk: Julidans is geen festival van pure dans en prachtige superbodies. We zoeken elk jaar juist naar dans die nét afwijkt, grenzen opzoekt, overschrijdt en verlegt. Dans die nieuwe vormen presenteert en dwarsverbanden creëert tussen disciplines. Dans door unieke performers die ons verwachtingspatroon doorbreken en de (voor)oordelen over dans en het lichaam een pootje lichten. Waarbij het gaat om méér dan schoonheid. Maar wat doet die beeldschone jongeling dan op ons programmaboek, zult u denken. Is dat beeld niet in tegenspraak met al die mooie woorden hierboven? Ja en nee. Ja, het is een uitgesproken esthetisch beeld. Daar zijn we ook niet tegen. Hier en daar - we geven het toe - glipt er wel eens een ongegeneerd móóie voorstelling in het festival. We noemen hier 生长Genesis van Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui en Yabin Wang: betoverend! Of de openingsvoorstelling van VA Wölfl / NEUER TANZ: overdonderende beeldenpracht, maar ook ontregelend multimediatheater, met een uiterst stekelige, maatschappijkritische lading onder die schoonheid.

Zo interpreteren wij het beeld op de voorpagina ook. Onder de oppervlakte van vrijwel alle Julidansvoorstellingen, of ze nu esthetisch of weerbarstig en sober zijn, zit een diepere, betekenisvolle laag. Het lichaam fungeert daarbij als boodschapper, als fysieke drager, als symbool, soms als onderwerp. In Untitled Feminist Show bijvoorbeeld. De Koreaans/Amerikaanse Young Jean Lee laat ons kijken naar vrouwenlichamen en tegelijk nadenken over de manier waarop wij naar vrouwenlichamen kijken. Lisbeth Gruwez, twee jaar geleden de favoriet van velen, onderzoekt in AH|HA het lichaam in een specifieke staat: extase. Van de eerste microreactie tot de ultieme explosie. Holiday on Stage is een gedanst discours over macht, verleiden en verleid worden in onze westerse kapitalistische samenleving. Klinkt chic, oogt ironisch, werkt humoristisch, maar choreograaf Martin Schick is bloedserieus. Net zo lijkt The Old Testament According to The Loose Collective een droogkomisch dansconcert, maar voor de goede verstaander geven deze bijzonder Bijbelvaste performers een originele exegese. Dat kan dus allemaal met het lichaam, want in het theater is het lichaam niet wat het op het eerste gezicht lijkt. Het spreekt zijn eigen taal, het herbergt, verbergt en onthult boodschappen en betekenissen. Samen met u zijn wij de gelukkigen die dat allemaal mogen ontdekken. PREFACE The tell-tale body Here at Julidans, we sometimes give in to introspection. Why is one performance suitable for the festival, while another isn’t? What do we want to achieve, and are we successful in achieving this? What do we actually represent as a festival? One thing is clear: Julidans is not a festival of mere dance and beautiful super bodies. Each year we go in search of dance that is slightly different, that pushes the boundaries, surpasses them, and moves them. Dance that presents new forms and traverses disciplines. Dance by unique performers who surpass our expectations and (preconceived) notions, regarding dance and the body. This involves more than just beauty. But, what is that gorgeous youngling then doing on our programme book, you might think. Doesn’t that image contradict all the lovely words above? Yes and no. Yes, it is a pronounced aesthetic image. But we aren’t against that. Here and there - we must admit - an unabashedly beautiful performance does slip into the festival. Here we mention 生长Genesis from Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui and Yabin Wang: enchanting! Or the opening performance by VA Wölfl / NEUER TANZ: overwhelmingly beautiful images, but also disorderly multimedia theatre, with an extremely prickly, socially critical charge beneath the beauty.

This is how we also interpret the image on the front page. Under the surface of pretty much every performance at Julidans, whether aesthetically pleasing or obstinate and sober, rests a deeper, more meaningful layer. The body functions like a messenger, a physical carrier, a symbol, sometimes as the subject. In Untitled Feminist Show, for example, the Korean/ American Young Jean Lee shows us women’s bodies and simultaneously lets us think about the manner in which we view women’s bodies. Lisbeth Gruwez, the favourite of many two years ago, investigated the body, in AH|HA, in a specific state: ecstasy. From the first micro reaction to the ultimate explosion. Holiday on Stage is a danced discourse relating to power, seducing and being seduced in our western capitalistic society. Sounds chic, comes across as ironic, works humoristic, but choreographer Martin Schick is dead serious. Similarly, The Old Testament According to The Loose Collective seems like a dry comical dance concert, but for those who really understand, this well-versed Biblical performance provides an original exegesis. All of this is possible through the body, because in theatre, the body is not what it appears to be at first glance. It speaks its own language; it houses, hides and conceals messages and meanings. In 2011 opende VA Wölfl Julidans met zijn Ich sah: Das Lamm auf dem Berg Zion, Offb. 14,1., waarin hij de hysterische banaliteit toonde van ons hedendaagse leven. ‘Kurze stücke’ is eerder een greep uit de vele werelden die in onze tijd naast elkaar bestaan, van kunst tot commercie, van strijd- tot feestcultuur. Geweren worden ingezet naast kostuums vol glinsterende pailletten. Militaire oefeningen wisselt Wölfl af met klassieke muziek, een choreografie met machinegeweren wordt gedanst op elektrische gitaarrock.

Zijn voorstellingen zijn opzwepende collages van hedendaagse installatiekunst, ontwrichtend theater en conceptuele dans. Een pleaser is VA Wölfl bepaald niet. De wil om de kijker op te schudden zit diepgeworteld en dat doet hij graag op humoristisch, provocatieve wijze. Zo maakt hij vaak gebruik van wapens op het toneel, van opblaasbare tanks tot mitrailleurs, die hij puur inzet als beeldende rekwisieten.

he experimental French-German artist VA Wölfl works entirely according to his own free interpretations. His performances are rousing collages of contemporary installation art, disruptive theatre and conceptual dance. The need to shake up the viewer is deep rooted and he likes to do this in a humorous, provocative way. VA Wölfl opened Julidans 2011, and now he’s back. ‘Kurze stücke’ is a snippet from the many worlds that coexist alongside each other in our time, from art to commerce, from conflict to party culture. Weapons are used alongside costumes full of glittering sequins, military exercises, classical music, machine guns and dancing to electric guitar rock.

Losgezongen van welke traditie of welke kunstdiscipline ook werkt de experimentele Frans-Duitse kunstenaar VA Wölfl geheel volgens zijn eigen vrije opvattingen. Na studies schilderkunst bij Oskar Kokoschka (!) en fotografie, richtte hij in de jaren tachtig zijn dansgroep NEUER TANZ op.

ijf jaar geleden bundelden negen jonge choreografen, performers, componisten en musici uit heel Europa hun krachten in The Loose Collective, dat zijn thuisbasis heeft in Oostenrijk. Sindsdien gaven ze vele concerten en maakten drie grootschalige podiumwerken: Here Comes the Crook, a contemporary dance musical (2010), The Old Testament According to The Loose Collective (2012) en The Game Game (2014). Hun kijk op het Oude Testament, alom bejubeld om de onconventionele frisheid en de verrassende rijkheid aan theatrale middelen, nodigden we uit op Julidans.

In The Old Testament presenteert deze groep jonge honden hun geestige kijk op het Oude Testament, als het uitgelezen voorbeeld van menselijke creativiteit en tegelijk misschien wel de grootste vergaarbak van menselijke ambities en frustraties. e beste aanwijzing dat de avant-garde niet dood is, en nooit zo grappig is geweest,” schreef New York Magazine over het werk van de avontuurlijke underground theatermaakster en - schrijfster Young Jean Lee (1974). Ze werd geboren in Korea, groeide op in Washington (VS), studeerde Engels en richtte in 2003 haar eigen gezelschap YJLTC op in New York. Voor elke voorstelling - tien tot nu toe - vindt ze zichzelf als theatermaker opnieuw uit. Zo kwamen uit haar koker al een komische voorstelling over zwarte Amerikanen, een cabaretshow over de dood (met haar band Future Wife) en een komische kostuumversie van Shakespeares King Lear.

he adventurous underground theatre maker and writer Young Jean Lee (1974) has already made a comic production about black Americans, a cabaret show about the dead and a humorous costume version of Shakespeare’s King Lear. The KoreanAmerican artist enters the world of dance for the first time with Untitled Feminist Show. The public take in six charismatic stars from underground theatre, dance, cabaret and burlesque in a droll, and sometimes somewhat uneasy extravaganza about what it means to be caught in sexist stereotypes.

Met Untitled Feminist Show begeeft Lee zich voor het eerst op het pad van de dans. ange tijd was ze een van de opvallendste danseressen in het ensemble van Jan Fabre. Samen met componist Maarten van Cauwenberghe verovert Lisbeth Gruwez (1977) sindsdien rap de Europese en Amerikaanse podia onder de naam Voetvolk. Haar virtuoze lichaamsbeheersing, haar kracht en haar feilloze inzicht in wat werkt op het toneel maken haar tot een fenomeen in de hedendaagse dans. In 2012 was Gruwez’ solo It’s going to get worse and worse and worse, my friend een grote hit op Julidans (waar ze in eerdere jaren al was opgevallen in het Vondelpark en Julidans NEXT). Dit jaar keert ze terug met haar eerste groepswerk, AH/HA, een onderzoek naar ‘het lichaam in extase’.

ormer Jan Fabre dancer Lisbeth Gruwez has formed her own dance group Voetvolk together with composer Maarten van Cauwenberge. In 2012 her virtuoso solo It’s going to get worse and worse and worse, my friend was a big hit at Julidans. This year she is returning with her first group work, AH/HA, a study of ‘the body in ecstasy’. Five dancers explore all forms of laughter both on a physical and psychological level until they almost explode.

Vijf dansers, onder wie Gruwez zelf, laten zien wat er met het lichaam gebeurt als het lacht. Hoe het zich overlevert, eerst in een fijne ontspanning (de glimlach) maar al snel in een volledig verlies van controle: de bulderlach die het lichaam tot ver over zijn grenzen duwt. In AH/HA trekken Gruwez en haar dansers alle registers van de lach open, op fysiek en psychisch vlak. Totdat ze zowat exploderen van het lachen.

e Marokkaans-Vlaamse Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui (1976) is een favoriet op Julidans vanwege zijn ijzersterke beeldtaal (denk aan Sutra met Chinese Shaolinmonniken, Dunas met fadoster María Pagés of TeZukA, zijn ode aan Japan). Eerder danste hij onder andere bij het Vlaamse gezelschap les ballets C de la B, in 2010 richtte hij zijn inmiddels wereldbefaamde gezelschap Eastman op. In zijn werk toont Cherkaoui zich een sterke bruggenbouwer. Inspiratie put hij zowel uit zijn oosterse roots als uit westerse dans en muziek, uit ratio en spiritualiteit. Voor 生长Genesis vond Cherkaoui een geestverwant in de Chinese danseres, choreografe en (tv-) actrice Yabin Wang (bij filmliefhebbers bekend van de adembenemende drumdansscène in House of Flying Daggers).

he Moroccan-Flemish Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui (1976) is a favourite at Julidans because of his strong imagery (think of Sutra, Dunas, TeZukA). Having danced with the likes of les ballets C de la B he set up his own company Eastman in 2010. In his work he combines his Eastern roots with Western dance and music, nature with culture, ratio with spirituality. Cherkaoui made 生长 Genesis together with the Chinese (tv-) actress, dancer and choreographer Yabin Wang (House of Flying Daggers); a performance in which they examine the disturbed relationship between man and nature.

Met vier Chinese dansers (onder wie Yabin zelf) en drie van Eastman maakte Cherkaoui een voorstelling over de band tussen mens en natuur. “Al vanaf de geboorte, die meestal in een ziekenhuis plaatsvindt, worden we aan de natuur onttrokken.” zegt Cherkaoui. “Het verbreken van die verbintenis is enkel bij de mens zo extreem.” Met prachtige live muziek.

Nu komt hij terug met D’après une histoire vraie, dé sensatie op het bekende theaterfestival van Avignon in 2013. Een herinnering aan een groep volksdansende mannen inspireerde hem tot het maken van dit stuk. Acht mannen met baarden combineren eigentijdse dans met populaire mediterrane (folklore)dans, opgezweept door drummers Didier Ambact en King Q4. Een ontroerende voorstelling over mannenvriendschap, samenzijn, het leven vieren, onderlinge loyaliteit, stoerheid en kwetsbaarheid. “Een explosie van vitaliteit.”, schreef Les Echos.

he love Christian Rizzo has for image and music is clear to see in his performances. Following Julidans appearances in 2005 and 2008, Rizzo is now bringing a performance to Julidans inspired by his memories of a group of folk dancing men. Eight bearded men combine contemporary dance with popular Mediterranean folk dance, whipped up by two drummers. A moving performance about friendship between men, togetherness, celebrating life, mutual loyalty and about balancing on the edge of toughness and vulnerability.

Zijn voorliefde voor beeld en muziek laat zich duidelijk aflezen aan de dansvoorstellingen van zijn gezelschap. Twee keer eerder nodigden we Rizzo uit op Julidans, met zijn verbluffende solo Autant vouloir le bleu du ciel et m’en aller sur un âne (2005) en met Imbizo e Maxweni (2008), waarin hij zijn abstracte danstaal combineerde met de energie van negen Zuid-Afrikaanse dansers.

The performances she has been giving since 1989, often together with her sister Dalila, are minimal, sensual and very concentrated. The sisters bring their latest duet with Les Oiseaux. Belaza also dances her fascinating La Nuit, a solo in which “you can hardly believe your eyes” (De Morgen).

In 2010 toonde Belaza op Julidans het duet Le Cri, waarin ze traditionele Algerijnse bewegingen afzette tegen muziek van Maria Callas, Nina Simone en Amy Winehouse. Door de Franse critici werd dit werk uitgeroepen tot ‘verrassing van het jaar’. Met Les Oiseaux tonen de zussen Belaza hun nieuwste duet. Ook danst Belaza La Nuit, een solo op een eindeloos herhaalde zangfrase die stijgt in toon en sterkte, waarop ze in verblindend tegenlicht alsmaar ronddraait. “Je gelooft op den duur je eigen ogen niet meer.” schreef De Morgen.

e in Algerije geboren Nacera Belaza woont sinds haar vijfde jaar in Frankrijk, waar ze literatuur studeerde alvorens zich te gaan wijden aan de dans. In haar werk zoekt ze naar de fijne lijn tussen spiritualiteit en plezier, waarbij ze haar kunst in overeenstemming probeert te houden met haar islamitische geloof en haar sobere levensstijl. De voorstellingen die ze sinds 1989 maakt, dikwijls samen met haar zus Dalila, zijn minimaal, sensueel en zeer geconcentreerd. De danseressen gebruiken herhaling en variatie om bij het publiek een tranceachtige ervaring op te roepen.

or over a year, Niv Sheinfeld and Oren Laor have been preparing their own version of the dance work Two Room Apartment, a choreography by the famous Israeli dancers Liat Dror and Nir Ben Gal. The work uses a simple dance language and a minimalist aesthetic, and explores the notion of life as a framework in which a precise, almost compulsive repetition of customs and behaviors takes place. Sheinfeld & Laor’s version was announced “Best Performance of the Year” by the Israeli Dance Critics Circle in December 2013.

In 2010 stonden de twee al op Julidans NEXT met Big Mouth (samen met Keren Levi) en Covariance. Ditmaal tonen ze hun eigentijdse remake van Two Room Apartment, waarmee Sheinfelds geestelijke ouders Liat Dror en Nir Ben Gal in 1987 een nieuwe wind door de Israëlische dans lieten waaien. In het duet (in de oorspronkelijke versie voor man en vrouw, nu herbewerkt voor twee mannen) reflecteren de dansers op hun relatie als levenspartners en als kunstenaarsduo. Door er hun eigen draai aan te geven blazen Sheinfeld en Laor deze klassieker nieuw leven in.

e Duits-Nederlandse choreografe Nicole Beutler (1969) valt op door haar minimalistische, poëtische dans en haar subtiele humor. In haar zoektocht naar de zeggingskracht van dans en performance grijpt ze graag terug naar het verleden. Vorig jaar stond ze tijdens Julidans in het Vondelpark met One on One, gemaakt met een groep dansstudenten. Samen met anderen organiseert ze ook We Live Here, de Julidans summer academy voor dansprofessionals. Dit jaar mogen we de wereldpremière aankondigen van haar nieuwe stuk.

he German-Dutch choreographer Nicole Beutler stands out through her minimalistic, poetic dance and her subtle humour. She was already part of Julidans at the Vondelpark and is co-organiser of the annual We Live Here-summer academy,where dance professionals meet. This year her piece 5: ECHO is to world premier during Julidans. It is a reinterpretation of Vermiljoen (1977) by Bianca van Dillen, an examination of where dance was during the seventies and where it has led us to.

Met 5: ECHO (Beutler nummert haar werken) duikt de ze in de Nederlandse dansgeschiedenis. Ze neemt de voorstelling Vermiljoen (1977) van Bianca van Dillen als uitgangspunt. Van Dillen maakte haar werk voor zes danseressen in het Shaffy Theater, geïnspireerd door de ‘alles kan’-mentaliteit die ze in New York had opgedaan. We schrijven de roerige jaren zeventig. In de dans broeide van alles. Waartoe heeft dat ons geleid?

ij het Spaanse gezelschap La Veronal onderzoekt een groep kunstenaars uit de dans, film, fotografie, muziek en literatuur nieuwe mogelijkheden om verhalen te vertellen. Zij willen het bewustzijn van de kijker binnendringen met een complexe machinerie aan kunstvormen. De voorstellingen van Veronal-oprichter Marcos Morau zijn een uitgelezen voorbeeld van wat deze jonge generatie Spaanse kunstenaars in haar mars heeft. In zijn al dikwijls bekroonde werk refereert Morau net zo gemakkelijk naar beeldende kunst uit de renaissance als naar films van David Lynch als naar de moderne dans van Jiří Kylián en William Forsythe. In Siena laat Morau zijn licht schijnen op de talloze manieren waarop kunstenaars door de eeuwen heen het menselijk lichaam hebben geïnterpreteerd en becommentarieerd. Zijn reis begint in de renaissance en eindigt in de 21e eeuw.

woman sits in a museum gallery and observes a painting. Near the door a man stands and watches the scene. This is the starting point for the new project from Marcos Morau’s company La Veronal, which takes us to the Italian city of Siena to initiate a reflection on the conception of the human body. The piece is an exploration of the history of Italian art, in a journey that begins in the Renaissance, when humankind recovered its self-awareness, and finishes in the modern world. In this new work La Veronal continue to draw on references from other artistic disciplines such as cinema (a.o. David Lynch’s) and literature.

Zo keerde ze zich al tegen apartheid, racisme, vrouwenonderdrukking en tegen de clichés die aan de danskunst kleven. Haar voorstellingen dragen opmerkelijke titels, zoals Walking next to our shoes … intoxicated by strawberries and cream, we enter continents without knocking … (Julidans 2009, over Zulukoren) of We must eat our suckers with the wrappers on (Julidans 2005, over aids).

he South-African choreographer Robyn Orlin does not shrink away from provocative themes. In her work she has always opposed apartheid, racism, suppression of women and the clichés which cling to the art of dance. But always with a humorous twist. Following visits to Julidans in 2005 and 2009 she is back with her latest performance, working with dancers from the Jant-Bi company from Dakar (Senegal). Their performance does away with the prejudices with which the body is weighed down in our world.

e Canadese Louise Lecavalier (1958) was jarenlang het gezicht van La La La Human Steps, het gezelschap dat sinds de jaren 1980 wereldwijd furore maakt. Ze danste in talloze werken van La La La-voorman Édouard Lock. Recensenten noemden haar “de briljantste danseres in leven”, bekend om haar enorme drive om via dans iets te delen met het publiek. Na achttien jaar richtte ze haar eigen gezelschap op en zocht met succes haar eigen weg.

or years Canadian Louise Lecavalier was the face of La La La Human Steps and was pronounced by critics as ‘the most brilliant dancer alive” and known for her enormous drive to share something through dance with the public. After eighteen years she set up her own company. In her first self-created choreography So Blue (2012) Cavalier lets the body speak uncensored. An intense, rough, obsessive and mysterious dance piece to rhythmic, instinctive music.

In 2012 bezocht ze Julidans met het tweeluik Children (choreografie Nigel Charnock) en A Few Minutes of Lock (choreografie Édouard Lock). Met So Blue (2012) waagde ze zich voor het eerst zelf aan een choreografie, voor haarzelf en danser Frédéric Tavernini. Daarin laat ze het lichaam ongecensureerd spreken. Zoals ze het zelf omschrijft: “Ik wilde het lichaam alles laten zeggen wat het wilde; ik wilde het vrijlaten om uit de overdaad aan spontane bewegingen iets zuivers en ongecontroleerds te laten oprijzen.” Het resultaat is een intens, ruig, obsessief en mysterieus dansstuk op ritmische muziek die de instinctieve aard van de bewegingen onderstreept.

TAMAGO & NEW CREATION (NEDERLANDSE PREMIÈRE) et Ballet National de Marseille opent steeds vaker de deuren voor freelance choreografen die veel in hun mars hebben. Bij het gezelschap krijgen ze de gelegenheid te werken met de virtuoze dansers van het ballet. Zo werkte Ballet de Marseille al met Julidansbekenden Christian Rizzo, Emanuel Gat en Olivier Dubois, en, bijvoorbeeld, Lucinda Childs. De Japanse choreograaf Yasuyuki Endo, sinds 2005 solist bij het gezelschap, creëerde met componist Leonardo Eto en de dansers een voorstelling met live Japanse drums en dans. Tamago (‘ei’ ) verbeeldt de nooit eindigende levenscyclus, van geboorte via conflict, drift, symbiose tot nieuwe geboorte, gedreven door een tomeloze stroom van energie.

Na opleidingen dans en design in haar geboorteland Argentinië en moderne dans aan de Merce Cunningham Studio in New York verzeilde ze uiteindelijk in Berlijn, waar ze met haar gezelschap Dorky Park stevig aan de weg timmert.

erlin-based choreographer Constanza Macras creates energetic performances full of reflection on the here and now. Following Back to the present and Brickland she is returning to Julidans with Distortion. Na Back to the Present (2006, over ons leven op de ruïnes van het verleden) en Brickland (2008, over de trek van de middenklasse naar de Vinexwijk) keert Macras terug naar Julidans met Distortion. Hierin onderzoekt ze met een groep jonge performers van de Hiphop Academy Hamburg hun identiteit en hoe ze zich staande houden in de grote stad. De performers spelen ‘zichzelf’; input voor de voorstelling haalde Macras uit hun persoonlijke verhalen en ervaringen. Bewegingen en codes uit de hiphop transformeerde ze tot een expressieve, goudeerlijke choreografie. “De dynamiek en de opmerkelijke technische virtuositeit van de performers dragen bij aan een verhaal dat alles omvat: bezinning, sociale kritiek en humor.” schreef Die Welt.

ulidans Artist’s Lab biedt makers uit landen waar hedendaagse dans geen vanzelfsprekende kunstvorm is, een platform waar geleerd, geëxperimenteerd en gecreëerd kan worden. Het publiek ziet producties die anders niet tot stand gekomen waren. Het Lab bestaat uit twee fasen. Het eerste jaar (2014) organiseert Julidans een ontmoeting tussen acht beginnende, talentvolle dansmakers uit Nederland en andere landen. Zij wisselen informatie uit en verkennen elkaars werk, (dans)cultuur en thema’s. Ze volgen workshops, bezoeken de Julidansvoorstellingen en ontmoeten de choreografen. In deze fase staat niet het resultaat, maar de ontmoeting centraal. Wel delen de makers hun ervaringen met het publiek in een programma met fragmenten uit eigen werk (of dat van anderen) of ervaringen uit het Lab. Het daaropvolgende jaar kunnen de deelnemers een voorstel indienen voor een productie die zij met andere Labdeelnemers willen maken. Artist’s Lab begeleidt het maken van deze voorstelling, die tijdens Julidans 2015 in première gaat tijdens Julidans NEXT, het podium voor aankomend talent. Julidans Artist’s Lab werkt samen met Borneoco. Mede mogelijk gemaakt door AMMODO.

e Zwitserse performer en choreograaf Martin Schick (1978) houdt ervan wetmatigheden en gewoontes op hun kop te zetten. Conventies uit de kunst, de politiek en de sociale omgang zijn bij hem niet veilig. In 2012 stond Schick tijdens Julidans in het Paradisoprogramma I Like To Watch Too met zijn Halfbreadtechnique, waarin hij het kapitalistische systeem op de korrel nam. Met zijn eerste grotere voorstelling Not my Piece (2012), ‘een introductie in de wereld van het postkapitalisme’ , reisde hij langs vele festivals. Vorig jaar maakte hij samen met de Servische theatermaker Damir Todorovic het buitengewoon scherpe en grappige Holiday on Stage, over de behoefte van de westerse mens om constant in het centrum van de aandacht te staan.

Die samenwerking smaakte naar meer. Hun tweede voorstelling maakten ze onafhankelijk van dat gezelschap, samen met twee jonge experimentele muzikanten, Áron Porteleki and Ádám Czitrom. In SKIN ME verwerkten de vijf makers hun hoogstpersoonlijke ervaringen met de liefde en alles wat daarbij komt kijken.

For SKIN ME they worked independently from the company, and had two young experimental musicians join them. SKIN ME is a personal story about relationships and love affairs. Familiar scenes are replayed and transformed to reveal new meanings. Playfully skinning out of love.

e Tunesische Radhouane El Meddeb werd direct na zijn theaterstudie al ‘de jonge hoop van het Tunesische theater’ genoemd. Met zijn in Frankrijk gevestigde gezelschap maakt hij voorstellingen met een theatrale inslag. Zo trakteerde hij in 2010 zijn publiek op een ter plekke bereide couscousmaaltijd tijdens zijn voorstelling Je danse et je vous en donne à bouffer (‘Ik dans en ik geef je te eten’).

Against a the backdrop of political unrest in the Arabian world Au temps looks back at the period before 1970, when television entertainment was immensely popular and Arabian evenings were filled with musical films, light comedies and belly dance shows - a shril contrast to the violent nature of our time.

Julidans NEXT presenteert Au temps où les Arabes dansaient (‘Toen de Arabieren dansten’), een stuk voor vier dansers. Het begon als cabaretproject, maar gaandeweg de repetities, tegen een achtergrond van politieke onrust in de Arabische wereld, kreeg het stuk een radicalere wending. De voorstelling blikt nostalgisch terug op het Arabische televisie-entertainment van voor de jaren zeventig, toen Arabieren massaal aan de buis gekluisterd zaten voor films vol zang en dans, lichte komedies vol magie en buikdansshows. Vrolijk vertier dat in schril contrast staat tot de gewelddadige aard van onze huidige wereld, die definitief heeft afgerekend met de zoete illusies en kartonnen decors van weleer.

n Heritage gaat Shailesh Bahoran op zoek naar zijn Hindoestaanse roots en de betekenis daarvan voor zijn identiteit als persoon en danser. Geïnspireerd door mythologische verhalen als de Ramayana en de Mahabharata onderzoekt hij de overeenkomsten tussen hiphop en klassieke Indiase dans. Bahoran is een veelzijdige danser en choreograaf met stevige roots in de hiphopcultuur, maar niet bang out-of-the-box te werken. Hij werkte onder meer samen met Het Nationale Ballet, Don’t Hit Mama, Het Nederlands Symfonieorkest en de Amsterdamse Hogeschool voor de Kunsten en is sinds 2011 verbonden aan het dansgezelschap ISH.

Ze legt de focus op de poging: op het verdwalen, het niet-weten, het ongemak en het verdriet dat in een lichaam schuilt.

l vele jaren is choreografe Krisztina de Châtel (bekend om haar minimalistische dans in combi met beeldende kunst) geïnteresseerd in wat zich afspeelt in de maatschappij. Beweging die zij op straat om zich heen ziet gebruikt ze in haar choreografieën. Nadat zij werkte met vuilnismannen en brandweermannen, raakte ze geïnspireerd door het beroep van de stratenmaker. Zij vond een verwant in beeldend kunstenaar Wouter Klein

Velderman, waarmee ze in 2013 al de voorstelling In Holland Staat een Huis maakte. Het uitgangspunt voor ÚT (OET), Hongaars voor straat, zijn de oneindige repetitieve handelingen van de stratenmakers, en de dito patronen van de straatstenen. In tegenstelling tot de brandweerman en de vuilnisman creëert de stratenmaker iets blijvends. Hierin is de verbinding van dans met beeldende kunst gemaakt.

In contrast to the firemen and the dustmen, the street maker creates something permanent. The connection between dance and visual art was born herein. Julidans trapt af in stijl met een openingsfeest op di 1 juli, na afloop van de voorstelling CHOREOGRAPHIE / JOURNALISMUS: ‘kurze stücke’ van NEUER TANZ. Op za 12 juli sluit Julidans swingend af met een slotfeest in de Stadsschouwburg Amsterdam, na afloop van Distortion, de voorstelling van Dorky Park (rond 22.30 uur). Iedereen is uitgenodigd! De workshops vinden plaats bij de Henny Jurriëns Stichting, een van de meest toonaangevende open studio’s voor professionele dansers in Europa. WE LIVE HERE MAPPING SPACES Julidans organiseert voor de vierde keer de summer academy WE LIVE HERE, een initiatief van Andrea Božić, Nicole Beutler en Marijke Hoogenboom, bedoeld voor professionals uit de podiumkunsten en beeldende kunsten. De summer academy vindt plaats in de DOK studios. Dit jaar is het thema ‘mapping spaces’, met een focus op samenwerken in de stad, het verkennen van verschillende plekken en van manieren om samen te werken. WE LIVE HERE is een platform voor artistieke ontmoetingen, waar tijd en ruimte is om samen te werken en te denken. Er is ook een publiek presentatiemoment. Een productie van NBprojects i.s.m. Tilt en de Performance in Transition research group (AHK). Co-curator: Inge Koks. Met steun van: Studio DOK, FPK en AFK.
