From a ‘hopeless continent’, Africa is now the rising economic power with many countries in Africa amongst the fastest growing economies in the world. More importantly, these countries have also undergone wide-ranging political reforms and have integrated their economies at a regional level through the African Union. Thanks to changes in fiscal and monetary policy, exchange rate regimes, and pricing and trade policy, externally oriented private sectors are emerging in several African countries. Africa is open for business! These countries are ready to take advantage of new trade and investment opportunities. Investing in frontier markets always has its challenges. Due to lack of knowledge about investments in these countries it’s very important to weigh the risk and returns of such markets. What are these "new trade and investment opportunities"? Governments need increased advisory services and support to implement new policies to promote trade and investment. They need support to build capacity within the various Ministries of Trade and Industry. More importantly at the regional level the African Union and all the key Regional Economic Communities across Africa continue to require highly skilled trade and investment expertise to assist and support implementation of deepening regional integration.
The biggest surge in international trade today comes from nontraditional exports. In agriculture, non-traditional exports translate into a wide range of fresh and processed specialty products, while within manufacturing, light engineering, textiles and agro-industrial products represents the most dynamic trade category. SSA countries require support in identifying these niche products and reorienting production structures towards these products.
Sub-Saharan Africa has traditionally exported to Western Europe and, to a lesser extent, North America. Today, other markets beckon, both far and near. African exporters are developing commercial links to markets around the world. At the same time, African exporters are encouraged to seek new commercial links in domestic markets, neighbouring countries, and within the Sub-Saharan region. This would require support in developing these key strategic business linkages.
Trade does not come about simply because an enterprise in one country sells a product which is purchased by an enterprise in another country. Today, trade is increasingly nurtured through subsidiary, partner, strategic alliances, and other offshore contracting relationships between sellers and buyers around the world. It is being shaped by firms competing on the basis not just of traditional comparative advantage (i.e., lowest factor cost), but also by other dimensions of competitiveness such as product quality in the broadest sense of the word.
