PEACE CHILD – ALPHA OMEGA HISTORY David Gordon was brought up in the West End of London, next door to the Shaftesbury theatre. His first draft of Alpha Omega was called Lords of the Universe and was conceived as a Broadway/West end musical. Following the recording of a major double album featuring many ‘stars’ of popular music, offers came in from both Broadway and the West end; these were turned down. David, whose main interest lies in religion and philosophy, later felt that stage musicals trivialized the work and its message. Alpha Omega is inspired by the teachings of the great Prophets and seeks to re-state their message for the world today. That message is a strong and definite call for peace, and the unity of all faiths. It tells us that through love, forgiveness and understanding, we can save our world and secure a future for our children. David Gordon with his colleague Richard Sharpey and composer/arranger Richard Arnell transformed the work into a classical oratorio. The premiere was in Coventry cathedral in 1980 as part of the 40th commemorations of the blitz of Coventry. Ely cathedral saw part of this work re-created in Peace Child - Alpha Omega. Brigadier Michael and Eirwen Harbottle, who led the World Disarmament Campaign (WDC), saw the Coventry performance. They connected Gordon to Bernard Benson, who’s Peace Book told a story, set in the future looking back to the present, about children bringing peace to the world. For Eirwen, Michael, Gordon and Benson, the idea of a ‘celebration of Peace’ to replace all the negative campaigning against politicians was the inspiration for Peace Child. By a miracle, the Royal Albert Hall became free for the evening of 30th October 1981 - the last night of un disarmament Week. Gordon booked it immediately and persuaded David Woollcombe (Eirwen’s son-in-law), to write an original script marrying the story of the Peace Book with the music of Alpha Omega, adding some new songs. Three thousand five hundred people attended the spectacular premiere of Peace Child produced by Gordon, Woollcombe and Rosey Simonds, with Susannah York as the Storyteller. David Gordon was determined that the message of Peace Child should not die. He sent David Woollcombe to the USA where, together with Rosey, the staff and students of the duke Ellington School and Search for common Ground, Peace Child was premiered at Washington DC’s prestigious Kennedy Centre on December 2nd 1982. Bernard Benson’s Peace Book was written at the request of Canada’s ambassador to the un to draw attention to the subject of the Soviet/American cold War and arms race. Peace Child became a leader in the citizen diplomacy movement dedicated to ending the cold War. over 7.000 performances of Peace Child were produced, culminating, in 1986, in the first Soviet-American youth exchange, where Peace Child was performed by Soviet and American youth in 12 cities across Bernard the USA with a final performance back at the S. Benson Kennedy Centre. This blasted a hole in the 1922-1998 iron curtain through which over 100 US-Soviet Peace child tours passed until the Cold War was finally agreed to be over. A key element of each show was that the cast would be required to research the issues and re-write the dialogue to include their ideas. A Study Guide was produced for this purpose. Using this, producers in South Africa, Ireland, the Middle East, Central America and many other conflict areas produced their own versions of the show.

Peace Child International. Following 7 years in the USA and 3 in the Netherlands, PCI set up its residential headquarters in Buntingford, Hertfordshire, from which a team of international interns run its programmes. The UK-registered charity has grown to become one of the largest networks of youth-run organisations in consultative status with the United Nations. Starting in 1992 at the Rio Earth Summit, it has produced over 30 books and educational materials, mostly sponsored by the UN and the European commission, on sustainable development, human rights, climate change and other key global issues. All are written and illustrated by young people. The latest, Energy Revolution was produced for the Copenhagen Climate Summit. Songs WAKE UP MY HEART (national, arr. C.Kreek and A.Saluveer) Mu süda, ärka üles Ja kiida Loojat lauldes, Kes kõik head meile annab Ja muret ikka kannab.

I WHO AM I I, who am I? What is this world? Why am I here? I, what am I? What is my cause? What must I be? Is there a reason for living? And having a place of our own? What power conceived me? Abandoned me to the unknown? We, who are we? What is this place? Why are we here? We, who are we to be so lost And all alone? Is there a reason for living And having a place of our own? What power conceived me Abandoned me to the unknown? I, who am I? What is this world? Why am I here?

WORLD World – look at the way we are Look at the things we do Look at the words we say Life! – look at the way we live Look at the love we had Look at the things we’ve made Gone, gone are all those lovely days Gone are all the peaceful ways All that’s left is old and grey And our world is fading Our world is dying – today! Can’t you see the tide is changing? Don’t you know that truth is fading? People coming out from under Slowly rising to the thunder Listen to the shouting people Broken churches, broken steeple There’s no one for them to follow Every one’s a God tomorrow Can’t you see the world is dying? Repentant people all are crying Law and order has been drowned Chaos rules and has been crowned! World – look at the way we are Look at the things we do Look at the games we play Life! – look at the way we live Look at the things we build Look at the love we’ve killed Gone, gone are all those lovely days Gone are all the peaceful ways All that’s left is old and grey And our world is fading Our world is dying – today!

PARADISE Here is a world so beautiful and green Where the sun is shining and the waters run clean Here in this world where we all have to stay A paradise, a heaven, where our heads we will lay We are so smiling – eyes are seeing We are so happy – ears that hear We have a mouth for speaking, tasting We have a nose to smell the air! We are a people so happy - we say: “We love this world and here we will stay” We hear that voice deep inside our soul say “Listen to the music of life’s sweet call!” We are so smiling – eyes are seeing We are so happy – ears that hear We have a hand for touching, feeling We have a mind to see that’s clear! Here in this world where we all have to stay A paradise, a heaven, where our heads we will lay

INVENTIONS Make a wheel, then spinning it round It may carry the world Make a fire – yes building it high till It burns to the ground Make a blade and call it a spade To dig through the earth Creatures of Invention – yes we are Man! Heading for destruction with our own hands Nothing can stop us We’ll make our own star dust Nothing can stop us…

So spin that wheel, faster and faster It will carry us far Stoke up that fire, yes higher and higher Till it burns to the sky Make a bow, put in an arrow Let it fly through the world Heading for destruction with our own hands Plenty of money, more milk and more honey Who needs to work? But what of the spade, digging so hard? What’s left but soil and the earth? We are Creatures of Invention – yes we are Man! Heading for destruction with our own hands The wheels are all turning The fires are all burning We’re living for learning Learning, learning, learning

DREAMER Dreamer – you are my dreamer! Lady – you are my love! You are everything I ever dreamed I’d have Dreamer – you are my dreamer! Lover – you are my friend We’ll always be together Though this world may end Where-ever I go – I’ll watch over you Where-ever life takes us, I’ll be with you! Dreamer – you are my dreamer! Lady – you are my love! You are everything I ever dreamed I’d have Dreamer – you are my dreamer! Man – you are my friend I’ll always be beside you Until the end Please turn the page quietly

Love is the answer – Faith makes us strong Heaven our reason – tomorrow we’re gone No plans to make – nowhere to run Never stop trying – reach for the sun Love is the answer – Faith makes us strong Heaven our reason – tomorrow we’re gone Woman my woman, lady my friend We’ll be together until the end

WAR We’ll fight our way to distant hills, A bloody battle have We’ll raise our sword and kill them all We’ll raise our countries flag! We’ll kill our brothers, kill our friends, Kill each other till the end! We’ll kill our women, Children too, Kill them all until we’re through Kill them all until we’re through. God save our land, long live our flag, On to the war we go - praise to our dead But who says we’re right, who says we’re wrong Honour and pride - to this we belong! Oh come and save us! Oh come and save us! Oh come and save us from what we do! Our world is through! But who can save us! But who can save us? But who can save us from what we do? God - where are you?

FATHER IN THE SKY Father in the sky Won’t you tell us who you are? Won’t you say a word to me – that I can understand You have me in your hands Father in the sky Have you forgotten where we are? The clouds grow darker every day And I am so afraid I never was so brave…. How can I carry on And still believe in you When every hope has vanished Long ago - in spite of you How can we carry on How can we face you now? When everything we tried so hard To do was lost somehow How can we face you now? How can I face you now

SUPERMAN Where you gonna run to, Superman?! Where you gonna hide, where will beyour land? What you gonna say now, Superman?! Who’ll be the fool in your masterplan? What you gonna do now, Superman?! What have you done to God’s promised land? What have you done with this beautiful world? Where is your guiding star? What have you done with this Godgiven Grace? Who do you think you are? Yes – who do you think you are? Where you gonna run to, Superman?!

11

Where you gonna hide? Where will be your land? We’ll wake up one morning and the world will be gone With all of our beautiful dreams We had so many chances but we threw them away And now we’ve sold our souls to the Devil’s cause How did we lose control? And how we gonna pay the toll? What you gonna say now, Superman?! Who’ll be the fool in your masterplan? What you gonna do now, Superman?! What have you done to God’s promised land? Where you gonna run to…- Superman?!

I HAVE A VISION I have a vision, I have a dream I have the answer or so it seems. Don’t you see the truth, to fight is not right, We shall have our rainbow, we will have our sunlight If we unite! There’s a way you see, where no one gets hurt There’s a way with love if you try! There is hope and faith to keep you alive In your darkest day, just pray! Reach out with love, gather all your courage, Reach out with love, seek a brighter day! Love as our sword, peace as our weapon Reach out with love! Let us win this way! Martin Luther King had a vision! He had a dream He had the answer, or so it seemed! He knew the truth - to fight is not right We can have our rainbow, we can have the

sunlight! We must unite! A new world, A new light! A new world, A new light! A new hope! A new light Reach out with love, gather all your courage, Reach out with love, seek a brighter day! Love as our sword, peace as our weapon Reach out with love! Let us win this way! I have a vision!

CHILD FOR A DAY I was a child who ran full of laughter I was a child who lived for a day My eyes full of sunshine My heart full of smiles I was a child for a day. We were the children who ran in the morning We were the children who laughed at the sun Who listened to those who spoke with their wisdom We were the ones we would say. We’re getting older as time goes by A little older every day We are the children of yesterday. We are the men who worry of nothing We are the men who speak without aim Who listen to no one yet speak of their wisdom We were the ones we would say. We’re getting older as time goes by A little older every day We are the children of yesterday.

REACH OUT! Reach out for a star! Come out from where you are Show me what you can do Believe in me, I believe in you! Reach out for your dream It’s not as hard as it may seem Together we can make it through Together - me and you! Wake up -open our eyes, This is our world, our paradise. Reach out, don’t be afraid Come on now, we’ll find a way There’s a whole new world for us to see There’s a universe in you and me. Reach out, put your hand in mine! Oh see! - see how we shine! Together - we’ll make it through, Together me and you! Don’t be shy, just be yourself! You are your greatest wealth! Reach out for a star! Come out from where you are Show me what you can do Believe in me, I believe in you! Show me what you can do Believe in me, I believe in you!

FINAL WORDS BY SILLAMÄE SOCIETY FOR CHILD WELFARE FOUNDER AND TRUSTEE IRINA GOLIKOVA It is important to ask ourselves – do we value being educated, know a lot about cultures and in general are we orientated towards self-fulfilment. Or do we decide to be lazy and let life go as it is. Every one of us is sometimes not satisfied with life. We with our organisation have decided to take responsibility for our own environment and encourage others to implement their own initiatives. The purpose of this project was to initiate positive change towards openness and tolerance. It’s easy to be naive and hide your head in the sand. Life is full of complicated challenges, but meeting them head-first will help to see life from another angle and find effective solutions for problems. One possibility for this is taking part in NGO work. Everyone is expected in our projects and programs - all that matters is will! Ernest Hemingway wrote: “time is all we have”. Time won’t wait, use it wisely!

Yors faithfully,

Irina Golikova Founder and a trustee Sillamäe Society for Child Welfare

Peace Child - Alpha Omega In three countries. First performance was run by Peace Child International in Ely, UK on 30th of January 2010. Third and final is held in the framework of World Youth Congress in Istanbul, Turkey, 10th of August 2010 by E-Genclik Association. PEACE CHILD INTERNATIONAL PCI’s mission since its inception has been Youth Empowerment. So the Be the Change! Youthled Development (YLD) programme was born to empower young people to do small, community improvement projects costing up to $1,000. PCI also organizes the World Youth Congress series promoting Youth-led Development and exploring, with youth, government, UN and other agencies, the question: “What is the most effective role for youth in the effort to achieve sustainable development?” This is an exciting bi-annual event bringing together youth from all over the world and giving them the chance to have a dialogue with the major power holders. The Fifth World Youth Congress will take place in Istanbul this summer. E-Genclik Association – E-genclik means ‘E-youth’ in Turkish. Their motto is: “Think young, create change”, harnessing the power of youth for social benefit and creating self-confident, enterprising and sensitive young people who seek solutions to the problems around their environment. Based in Bursa, it is a local and national network of young people involved in youth-led development. Their Mission is to eliminate distances between young people in different locations by using internet to promote co-operation; they also encourage young people to volunteer and participate in civil society and in social, cultural and sustainable development projects. E-Genclik Association is hosting Peace Child’s 5th World Youth Congress in the summer of 2010. See: www.e-genclik.org.tr European Commission - Culture: The European Commission’s Culture Unit has a mandate to give culture a more prominent role in the European Union. It has three main objectives: • To promote cultural diversity and intercultural dialogue; • To promote culture as a catalyst for creativity, within the framework of the Lisbon strategy; • To promote culture as a vital part of the EU’s external relations.. It was also responsible for promoting 2008 as the European Year of Intercultural Dialogue. The unit finances hundreds of projects encouraging the transnational flow of artists and art works. It also manages the “European Capitals of Culture” scheme and awards European prizes in the field of culture, notably for cultural heritage, contemporary architecture, literature and contemporary music. Review these programmes at: http://ec.europa.eu/culture/index_en.htm.
