ARCHITECTURAL
scenarios
This semester is organised as a trail through a serie of architectonic scenarios that allow us to approach the notion and relation of BODY-SCALE-SPACE from different perspectives.
A scenario can be understood as a reference where a performance happens with specific circumstances, either past or futures. Those scenarios communicate the interpretation of that specific situation.
Stage director Peter Brook uses a red carpet as an element that overlapped to reality transforms a precise place into an scenario: an imaginary place becomes habitable. Thus he creates something honest: a human connection.

ARCHITECTURAL scenarios
We use the word scenario because it implies we will work under specific conditions of time and space: an EVENT. It is a learning instrument based on exploration, criticism and speculation that allow us to imagine possibilities, transformation capabilities and relations between human body and different types of spaces.
Architectural scenarios are test tubes where we can experiment and manipulate space and the relation with the body from different scales that range from the intimate and personal to the social and representative.
“I can take an empty space and call it a bare stage. A man walks across this empty space while someone is watching him, and this is all is needed for an act of theatre to be engaged” [Peter Brook]

SYNTHESIS (Laboratory of Architecture)
In the first semester we investigate two main topics: (universal) body and (abstract) space. By this we mean that we study space in architecture from the perspective of human body and how it interacts with and moves through sequences of spaces. We follow a non linear approach to architecture. We work in a Laboratory where students learn through experiences, think through production and learn by doing. We focus on the critical process rather than on the final result, this means that we are interested in what it does instead of how it looks like. We develop questions, rather than giving answers. Students will learn to develop basic tools to explore, analyse and represent their perceptions of space. Students are challenged to reflect and investigate architectural space by combining innovative skills, critical methods, curiosity, experimentation and abstraction. Those methods deal with the development of a project from an abstract idea into a concrete architectonic reality.
THEORY now
At the UMA faculty of Architecture, we see theory not only as a system of ideas intended to reflect, but - as in the Greek meaning of theoria - to speculate and contemplate - to develop a view and practice of action that reaches outside the limits and boundaries of accepted fields and methods, hybridizing them, inventing new categories and new modes of experimentation. In short what we look for is a new social and political theory able to confront the urgent questions of the future, one that develops speculative spatial and aesthetic models, and asks what it could mean to be Modern today within the very domain of praxis. Reality demands a theory, and those ideas should include experiments how architecture could indeed contribute making our world a better place. How a new idea of democracy could be enacted in our globalized world on different scales by means of architecture is the question. Theory seminars in the Bachelor Program are given by Heidi Sohn, Juan Luis Valderrabano MontaĂąes, Jan Richard Kikkert and Roemer van Toorn while the public lecture program<http://www.arch.umu.se/en/events/public-lectures/> and its seminars, initiated and organized by the theory department, are foremost part of the Master and PhD theory program, not withstanding the fact that bachelor students are very welcome to participate. architectural HISTORY
Architectural History is an endless amount of perspectives on the built materia spread out in the world. For every architect who wants to make a difference now or in the future, Architectural History is essential. The BA History program at UMA regards the development of architecture as a dynamic process within society. By continuously interpreting existing architectures through lectures, seminars, workshops and study trips, the History program aims at enabling students to engage with the past and connect it to the making of new architectures. The first year at UMA investigates relations between body, space, scale and object. The History courses present different ways of dealing with these notions in 20th century architecture. During the first semester an overview of Modernism is given, while the second semester digs deeper into Rationalism and Expressionism. The courses explore writing and making (models, drawings, etc.) as tools for understanding how architects form and have formed professional positions. These explorations make the students reflect on their own approach to architecture.
architectural TECHNOLOGY
At UMA we examine architectural technology as an integrated part of the semester projects which focuses primarily on research and analytic oriented design methods. The technology program consists of a series of preparation courses and workshops: Climate Responsive Design, Structure, Building Physics, Light, Acoustics, Theory of Architectural Technology, History of Architectural Technology, Technological Utopias & Dystopias and Materials. Preparation courses lead up to the actual workshops followed by further studio tutoring strengthening the integration of technology with the semester projects. The preparation courses provide students with the basic platform of academic knowledge, and falls in the form of lectures, reading material, analytical assignments and practical exercises. The preparation courses also teach specific analogue techniques like drawing, model making and craftsmanship techniques (via external consultants). Abstract models as well as concrete and detailed models and drawings ranging from 1:1 - 1:20 are developed simultaneously. This gives room for precision in discussions and reflections and critical assessments throughout the semester.

GRAPHIC representation It is the process of creating, producing, and distributing material incorporating words and images to convey data, concepts, and emotions. The field of graphic representation encompasses all phases of the graphic communications processes from origination of the idea (design, layout, and typography) through reproduction, finishing and distribution of two- or threedimensional products or electronic transmissions.

THEORY now Architectural theory is the act of thinking, discussing, and writing about architecture. What we look for is a new social and political theory able to confront the urgent questions of the future. Reality demands a theory, and those ideas should include experiments how Architecture could indeed contribute making our world a better place.
