I have heard hairdressers quoted with complete conviction on art, literature, politics, economics, child care and morals. Studies reveal that when people feel attractive, they have physical, emotional, social, psychological, and inspirational advantages. With the client as their canvas, a stylist has the ability to build confidence and change lives.

People need to talk about personal conflicts, but the stylist-client relationship doesn’t require them to go deep. Time discussing problems in the chair is like a life bandaid.

A client looks into the mirror with you behind them. This is less threatening than direct eye contact and the mirror creates an illusion of distance, resulting in clients feeling comfortable sharing personal dilemmas with you.

As a cosmetologist, you are one of the few people who physically touch people in your profession. Your unconditional acceptance builds trust.

You see your clients on a regular basis, and always before lifechanging events. You are there to help them prepare for these events and so they often associate you, as their stylist, with these memories and growth events. While therapists have training, your experiences have taught you about human behavior. Clients confiding in you is like having drinks with girlfriends—you care enough to listen, but don’t condemn them when they don’t change.

Facts tell and stories sell. Pepper your facts (before-and-after photos and techniques) with stories. Tell engaging narratives about your stylists, provide relevant anecdotes, and touch on interesting (but non-political) things in your community that engage your clients.

Encourage clients to promote your salon through word-of-mouth posts and by offering incentives. Try “Love your new style by ABC Salon? Upload a pic with hashtag #ABCsalon and get 10% off of your next visit!” Run contests like “post a pic of your new do with the hashtag #ABCsalon and be entered to win your next cut and color for free!”

Prompt action. Create a FREE Call-to-Action button on your salon’s Facebook page that says “book now.” On your page’s cover photo click Create Call to Action to get started.

Post how-to videos for your clients to DIY style at home.

Use before and after photos to display different styles and stylists’ talent.
