FORM & TRANSLATION 02
This exercise being displayed was produced in four steps. Step one was to create four 2D pat terns. Two of my personal designs were switched with two of my studio peers. With these two new designs and two old ones, step two required us to turn them into a 3D design through the use of a transformational vocabulary. Step three asked us to turn the 3D designs back into a 2D design. Step four asked us again to turn that 2D design into a new 3D design.
Comic Book Pavilion
Project 01
PAVILION 03
In my approach to this project, I understood comic books to be two things; a social or individual phenomenon. I experimented with designing an exhibition for the display of one comic book, based on the individual relationship that a person has with a book. The space allowed for the visitor to touch the book and read on a comfortable corner. From that model, I ultimately decided that in order to truly create a pavilion that includes the viewer into the exhibition, the design must be focused on the social aspect of comic books.
For the experience of the comics in this pavilion, each book will be essentially exploded into it’s indivual pages, of which will be layed out in order along the wall. This allows for all viewers to experience the exhibition of the displayed comic works. With the decision of how the comic books were to be displayed, the design took shape. The pavilion features six walls different in height and lenght. The sizing of the walls represents the length of the comic book being displayed. This allows for hierarchy of space and object to influence the enviroment.
The form of the pavilion follows a design logic of overlayed circles. The design highlights the little mo ments where one wall overlaps another to create this implied edge of space. From the interconnected circles, the roofing of the pavilion is extruded. The larger landscape circles help to relate the extior space with the interior.
The design itself is emblematic of the word “explode” as the high density of structure in the middle of the site is neutralized with offset walls surrounding the social site. This intentional frag mentation within the design allows for the landscape to relate back to the interior social space.
