THE WORLD’S LARGEST ARCHITECTURE PRACTICES JANUARY 2016

Encased in this striking building, are clean rooms with the VC-D vibration criteria, a staggering 16 times more sensitive than human perception, enabling revolutionary research into Graphene. No mean feat in a building that houses £14.5m of services equipment, located in a busy city centre.

Unusually, this sharp rise in numbers was achieved by organic growth rather than acquisition. After the acquisition of fellow integrated services giant URS in 2014, it has been a time of consolidation for US giant AECOM. Last year’s leader employs 2,100 architects – huge numbers to the architectural world but just a tiny fraction of its 100,000 workforce worldwide. AECOM’s breadth of service enables it to ofer everything from fnance and feasibility at the onset of a project through to operation at the end. Design delivery has been further strengthened by the recent acquisition of Hunt Construction. One of the challenges in such a large company, says Bill Hanway, AECOM’s lead for global architecture, is how to tap into this expertise in its architectural ofer. “We see major advantages in harnessing the group’s broad-based knowledge and innovative technology in our design solutions,” he says.

3

AECOM’s design work will get plenty of exposure this year at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, where it worked extensively on the masterplan, preliminary design for the seven sporting venues, and detailed design of the International Broadcast Centre.

AECOM is also lead consultant for the Los Angeles 2024 Olympic bid and designer of the Golden 1 Center in Sacramento, California, which Hanway says will be the most technologically advanced stadium in North America when it opens in the autumn. The company’s integrated ofer helps its expertise across the building sectors, with particular success in corporate, government, transport and infrastructure work around the world. Hanway points to transport, industrial and sports as being particular areas of growth. Hot spots for its architectural work include the Middle East, South-east Asia and some parts of North America, where it recently completed enhancements to Los Angeles International Airport. Notable completions in the coming year include two China projects – Schwarzman College at Tsinghua University in Beijing and Heyuan Hilton DoubleTree and commercial mixed-use project in Heyuan City, Guangdong.

The Japanese mega-practice reigns supreme in the Pacifc Rim region, billing almost twice as much as its nearest competitor. Nikken Sekkei is prolifc in many sectors but most notably in corporate and masterplanning/urban design work. In China, Nikken Sekkei had particular success with mixed-use development projects. As well as its core regional markets, the practice is increasingly looking to expand its overseas operations in the hope that these will grow to 20% of its sales. It has invested in and formed a business alliance with Australian practice Buchan Group and is also eyeing opportunities in Europe and the US. It particularly sees potential for transferring its expertise in transit-oriented developments into new regional markets. For the moment, however, much of its work is in Japan, with signifcant projects including the Toho Gakuen School of Music in Tokyo and Narita International Airport Terminal 3 in Chiba.

10 Design’s focus remains China, South-east Asia and the Middle East. Urban mixed-use, hospitality and residential have been strong in the latter, where 10 Design currently has $6 billion of designs under construction. In China, 2016 will see the completion of its frst super high rise projects including a 320m tower in Shizimen. Malaysia is also an area of expansion, with the group’s frst mixed-use development in the country, KL Gateway, completing in 2016. In addition to its core markets, 10 Design has expanded in the UK, where it is building a presence with projects such as the masterplanning of the £80 million innovation hub at Queen Margaret University in Scotland. Central and eastern Europe are other target regions.

EPR is upbeat after experiencing growth in its three key areas of expertise – residential, hotel and ofce. Projects include the completion of 24 Savile Row, a commercial/retail development in London’s Mayfair, and the ongoing £300 million mixed-use Ram Quarter in Wandsworth. It was also architect for the 360-bedroom Mondrian London hotel at Sea Containers House on the south bank of the Thames. “EPR is continuing to grow from strength to strength with high-quality projects on site and on the drawing boards . We have great clients and are extremely positive about the future,” says managing director Chris Castle.

The thriving London residential and mixed-use market has proved fertile territory for Squire and Partners, with completions this year including the £50 million St Edmund’s Terrace in Primrose Hill and three townhouses at Macaulay Road in Clapham. These will be followed by the mixed-use One The Elephant at Elephant & Castle and the Clarges ofce and residential development for British Land in Mayfair. 2016 will see Squire and Partners relocate to a new home in Brixton as part of the practice’s own project to refurbish and extend a former department store. The scheme also includes the conversion of a former fre station and stables to provide new premises for Brixton post ofce.
