Phos Hilaron Ancient Greek hymn meaning “O Gladsome Light

Hail, gladdening light Hail Gladdening Light Of His pure glory poured Who is the Immortal Father, Heavenly Blest Holiest of Holies, Jesus Christ our Lord Now we are come to the sun's hour of rest The lights of evening 'round us shine We hymn the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit Divine Worthiest art Though, at all times to be sung With undefiled tongue Son of our God, Giver of life alone Therefore, in all the world Thy glories Lord Thine own Text: from the Greek (3rd. C) Music: John Stainer

The Psalms The Brothers will sing an antiphon at the beginning and end of each psalm Psalm 138 Confitebor tibi 1 I will give thanks to you, O LORD, with my whole heart; * before the gods I will sing your praise. 2

I will bow down toward your holy temple and praise your Name, * because of your love and faithfulness;

3

For you have glorified your Name * and your word above all things.

4

When I called, you answered me; * you increased my strength within me.

5

All the kings of the earth will praise you, O LORD, * when they have heard the words of your mouth.

6

They will sing of the ways of the LORD, * that great is the glory of the LORD.

7

Though the LORD be high, he cares for the lowly; * he perceives the haughty from afar.

8

Though I walk in the midst of trouble, you keep me safe; * you stretch forth your hand against the fury of my enemies; your right hand shall save me.

9

The LORD will make good his purpose for me; * O LORD, your love endures for ever; do not abandon the works of your hands.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit: * as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen.

Psalm 139 Domine, probasti 1 LORD, you have searched me out and known me; * you know my sitting down and my rising up; you discern my thoughts from afar. 2

You trace my journeys and my resting-places * and are acquainted with all my ways.

3

Indeed, there is not a word on my lips, * but you, O LORD, know it altogether.

4

You press upon me behind and before * and lay your hand upon me.

5

Such knowledge is too wonderful for me; * it is so high that I cannot attain to it.

6

Where can I go then from your Spirit? * where can I flee from your presence?

7

If I climb up to heaven, you are there; * if I make the grave my bed, you are there also.

8

If I take the wings of the morning * and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea,

9

Even there your hand will lead me * and your right hand hold me fast.

10 If I say, "Surely the darkness will cover me, * and the light around me turn to night," 11 Darkness is not dark to you; the night is as bright as the day; * darkness and light to you are both alike. 12 For you yourself created my inmost parts; * you knit me together in my mother's womb. 13 I will thank you because I am marvelously made; * your works are wonderful, and I know it well. 14 My body was not hidden from you, * while I was being made in secret and woven in the depths of the earth. 15 Your eyes beheld my limbs, yet unfinished in the womb; all of them were written in your book; * they were fashioned day by day, when as yet there was none of them.

16 How deep I find your thoughts, O God! * how great is the sum of them! 17 If I were to count them, they would be more in number than the sand; * to count them all, my life span would need to be like yours. [18

Oh, that you would slay the wicked, O God! * You that thirst for blood, depart from me.

19 They speak despitefully against you; * your enemies take your Name in vain. 20 Do I not hate those, O LORD, who hate you? * and do I not loathe those who rise up against you? 21 I hate them with a perfect hatred; * they have become my own enemies.] 22 Search me out, O God, and know my heart; * try me and know my restless thoughts. 23 Look well whether there be any wickedness in me * and lead me in the way that is everlasting. Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit: * as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen.

Psalm 149 Cantate Domino 1 Hallelujah! Sing to the LORD a new song; * sing his praise in the congregation of the faithful. 2

Let Israel rejoice in his Maker; * let the children of Zion be joyful in their King.

3

Let them praise his Name in the dance; * let them sing praise to him with timbrel and harp.

4

For the LORD takes pleasure in his people * and adorns the poor with victory.

5

Let the faithful rejoice in triumph; * let them be joyful on their beds.

6

Let the praises of God be in their throat * and a two-edged sword in their hand;

7

To wreak vengeance on the nations * and punishment on the peoples;

8

To bind their kings in chains * and their nobles with links of iron;

9

To inflict on them the judgment decreed; * this is glory for all his faithful people. Hallelujah!

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit: * as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen.

First Lesson 2 Kings 11:1-20a Athaliah Reigns over Judah

11

Now when Athaliah, Ahaziah’s mother, saw that her son was dead, she set about to destroy all the royal family. 2 But Jehosheba, King Joram’s daughter, Ahaziah’s sister, took Joash son of Ahaziah, and stole him away from among the king’s children who were about to be killed; she put him and his nurse in a bedroom. Thus she hid him from Athaliah, so that he was not killed; 3 he remained with her six years, hidden in the house of the Lord, while Athaliah reigned over the land. Jehoiada Anoints the Child Joash 4 But

in the seventh year Jehoiada summoned the captains of the Carites and of the guards and had them come to him in the house of the Lord. He made a covenant with them and put them under oath in the house of the Lord; then he showed them the king’s son. 5 He commanded them, “This is what you are to do: one-third of you, those who go off duty on the sabbath and guard the king’s house 6 (another third being at the gate Sur and a third at the gate behind the guards), shall guard the palace; 7 and your two divisions that come on duty in force on the sabbath and guard the house of the Lord 8 shall surround the king, each with weapons in hand; and whoever approaches the ranks is to be killed. Be with the king in his comings and goings.” 9 The

captains did according to all that the priest Jehoiada commanded; each brought his men who were to go off duty on the sabbath, with those who were to come on duty on the sabbath, and came to the priest Jehoiada. 10 The priest delivered to the captains the spears and shields that had been King David’s, which were in the house of the Lord; 11 the guards stood, every man with his weapons in his hand, from the south side of the house to the north side of the house, around the altar and the house, to guard the king on every side. 12 Then he brought out the king’s son, put the crown on him, and gave him the covenant; they proclaimed him king, and anointed him; they clapped their hands and shouted, “Long live the king!” Death of Athaliah 13 When

Athaliah heard the noise of the guard and of the people, she went into the house of the Lord to the people; 14 when she looked, there was the king standing by the pillar, according to custom, with the captains and the trumpeters beside the king, and all the people of the land rejoicing and blowing trumpets. Athaliah tore her clothes and cried, “Treason! Treason!” 15 Then the priest Jehoiada commanded the captains who were set over the army, “Bring her out between the ranks, and kill with the sword anyone who follows her.” For the priest said, “Let her not be killed in the house of the Lord.” 16 So they laid hands on her; she went through the horses’ entrance to the king’s house, and there she was put to death. 17 Jehoiada

made a covenant between the Lord and the king and people, that they should be the Lord’s people; also between the king and the people. 18 Then all the people of the land went to the house of Baal, and tore it down; his altars and his images they broke in pieces, and they killed Mattan, the priest of Baal, before the altars. The priest posted guards over the house of the Lord. 19 He took the captains, the Carites, the guards, and all the people of the land; then they brought the king down from the house of the Lord, marching through the gate of the guards to the king’s house. He took his seat on the throne of the kings. 20 So all the people of the land rejoiced;

The Song of Mary, The Magnificat [Luke 1:46-55] The Brothers chant an antiphon at the beginning of the Magnificat, and again at the end.

My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord, my spirit rejoices in God my Savior; * for he has looked with favor on his lowly servant. From this day all generations will call me blessed: * the Almighty has done great things for me, and holy is his Name. He has mercy on those who fear him * in every generation. He has shown the strength of his arm, * he has scattered the proud in their conceit. He has cast down the mighty from their thrones, * and has lifted up the lowly. He has filled the hungry with good things, * and the rich he has sent away empty. He has come to the help of his servant Israel, * for he has remembered his promise of mercy, The promise he made to our fathers, * to Abraham and his children for ever. Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit: * as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen.

Second Lesson Acts 20:1-16 Paul Goes to Macedonia and Greece

20

After the uproar had ceased, Paul sent for the disciples; and after encouraging them and saying farewell, he left for Macedonia. 2 When he had gone through those regions and had given the believers much encouragement, he came to Greece, 3 where he stayed for three months. He was about to set sail for Syria when a plot was made against him by the Jews, and so he decided to return through Macedonia. 4 He was accompanied by Sopater son of Pyrrhus from Beroea, by Aristarchus and Secundus from Thessalonica, by Gaius from Derbe, and by Timothy, as well as by Tychicus and Trophimus from Asia. 5 They went ahead and were waiting for us in Troas; 6 but we sailed from Philippi after the days of Unleavened Bread, and in five days we joined them in Troas, where we stayed for seven days. Paul’s Farewell Visit to Troas 7 On

the first day of the week, when we met to break bread, Paul was holding a discussion with them; since he intended to leave the next day, he continued speaking until midnight. 8 There were many lamps in the room upstairs where we were meeting. 9 A young man named Eutychus, who was sitting in the window, began to sink off into a deep sleep while Paul talked still longer. Overcome by sleep, he fell to the ground three floors below and was picked up dead. 10 But Paul went down, and bending over him took him in his arms, and said, “Do not be alarmed, for his life is in him.” 11 Then Paul went upstairs, and after he had broken bread and eaten, he continued to converse with them until dawn; then he left. 12 Meanwhile they had taken the boy away alive and were not a little comforted. The Voyage from Troas to Miletus 13 We

went ahead to the ship and set sail for Assos, intending to take Paul on board there; for he had made this arrangement, intending to go by land himself. 14 When he met us in Assos, we took him on board and went to Mitylene. 15 We sailed from there, and on the following day we arrived opposite Chios. The next day we touched at Samos, and the day after that we came to Miletus. 16 For Paul had decided to sail past Ephesus, so that he might not have to spend time in Asia; he was eager to be in Jerusalem, if possible, on the day of Pentecost.

Nunc Dimittis

The Apostles’ Creed Officiant and People

I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

The Lord’s Prayer Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your Name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial, and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and for ever. Amen.

Anthem Round me falls the night 1 Round me falls the night; Saviour, be my light; through the hours in darkness shrouded let me see thy face unclouded; let thy glory shine in this heart of mine. 2 Earthly work is done, earthly sounds are none; rest in sleep and silence seeking, let me hear thee softly speaking; in my spirit's ear whisper, 'I am near.' 3 Blessèd, heavenly Light, shining through earth's night; voice, that oft of love hast told me; arms, so strong to clasp and hold me; thou thy watch wilt keep, Saviour, o'er my sleep.
