Phos Hilaron Ancient Greek hymn meaning “O Gladsome Light”

Like incense Like incense let my prayer rise before you, O God; the lifting of my hands like an evening oblation. Come, let us sing for joy in Christ our God; let us praise him with all creation. Like incense… Christ has broken death’s dominion over us and enlightened all the children of Eve. Like incense

The Psalms The Brothers will sing an antiphon at the beginning and end of each psalm Psalm 34 1 I will bless the Lord at all times; * his praise shall ever be in my mouth. 2

I will glory in the Lord; * let the humble hear and rejoice.

3

Proclaim with me the greatness of the Lord; * let us exalt his Name together.

4

I sought the Lord, and he answered me * and delivered me out of all my terror.

5

Look upon him and be radiant, * and let not your faces be ashamed.

6

I called in my affliction and the Lord heard me * and saved me from all my troubles.

7

The angel of the Lord encompasses those who fear him, * and he will deliver them.

8

Taste and see that the Lord is good; * happy are they who trust in him!

9

Fear the Lord, you that are his saints, * for those who fear him lack nothing.

10 The young lions lack and suffer hunger, * but those who seek the Lord lack nothing that is good. 11 Come, children, and listen to me; * I will teach you the fear of the Lord. 12 Who among you loves life * and desires long life to enjoy prosperity? 13 Keep your tongue from evil-speaking * and your lips from lying words. 14 Turn from evil and do good; * seek peace and pursue it. 15 The eyes of the Lord are upon the righteous, * and his ears are open to their cry. 16 The face of the Lord is against those who do evil, * to root out the remembrance of them from the earth.

17 The righteous cry, and the Lord hears them * and delivers them from all their troubles. 18 The Lord is near to the brokenhearted * and will save those whose spirits are crushed. 19 Many are the troubles of the righteous, * but the Lord will deliver him out of them all. 20 He will keep safe all his bones; * not one of them shall be broken. 21 Evil shall slay the wicked, * and those who hate the righteous will be punished. 22 The Lord ransoms the life of his servants, * and none will be punished who trust in him. Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit: * as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen.

First Lesson Wisdom 3:1-9 The Destiny of the Righteous 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9

But the souls of the righteous are in the hand of God, and no torment will ever touch them. In the eyes of the foolish they seemed to have died, and their departure was thought to be a disaster, and their going from us to be their destruction; but they are at peace. For though in the sight of others they were punished, their hope is full of immortality. Having been disciplined a little, they will receive great good, because God tested them and found them worthy of himself; like gold in the furnace he tried them, and like a sacrificial burnt offering he accepted them. In the time of their visitation they will shine forth, and will run like sparks through the stubble. They will govern nations and rule over peoples, and the Lord will reign over them forever. Those who trust in him will understand truth, and the faithful will abide with him in love, because grace and mercy are upon his holy ones, and he watches over his elect.

Canticle 18 — A Song to the Lamb Splendor and honor and kingly power * are yours by right, O Lord our God, For you created everything that is, * and by your will they were created and have their being; And yours by right, O Lamb that was slain, * for with your blood you have redeemed for God, From every family, language, people, and nation, * a kingdom of priests to serve our God. And so, to him who sits upon the throne, * and to Christ the Lamb, Be worship and praise, dominion and splendor, * for ever and for evermore.

Second Lesson Revelation 19:1, 4-10 The Rejoicing in Heaven After this I heard what seemed to be the loud voice of a great multitude in heaven, saying, “Hallelujah! Salvation and glory and power to our God, 4 And

the twenty-four elders and the four living creatures fell down and worshiped God who is seated on the throne, saying, “Amen. Hallelujah!” 5 And

from the throne came a voice saying,

“Praise our God, all you his servants, and all who fear him, small and great.” 6 Then

I heard what seemed to be the voice of a great multitude, like the sound of many waters and like the sound of mighty thunderpeals, crying out,

7

8

“Hallelujah! For the Lord our God the Almighty reigns. Let us rejoice and exult and give him the glory, for the marriage of the Lamb has come, and his bride has made herself ready; to her it has been granted to be clothed with fine linen, bright and pure”—

for the fine linen is the righteous deeds of the saints. 9 And

the angel said to me, “Write this: Blessed are those who are invited to the marriage supper of the Lamb.” And he said to me, “These are true words of God.” 10 Then I fell down at his feet to worship him, but he said to me, “You must not do that! I am a fellow servant with you and your comrades who hold the testimony of Jesus. Worship God! For the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy.”

The Song of Mary, The Magnificat [Luke 1:46-55] The Brothers chant an antiphon at the beginning of the Magnificat, and again at the end.

My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord, my spirit rejoices in God my Savior; * for he has looked with favor on his lowly servant. From this day all generations will call me blessed: * the Almighty has done great things for me, and holy is his Name. He has mercy on those who fear him * in every generation. He has shown the strength of his arm, * he has scattered the proud in their conceit. He has cast down the mighty from their thrones, * and has lifted up the lowly. He has filled the hungry with good things, * and the rich he has sent away empty. He has come to the help of his servant Israel, * for he has remembered his promise of mercy, The promise he made to our fathers, * to Abraham and his children for ever. Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit: * as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen.

The Apostles’ Creed Officiant and People

I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

The Lord’s Prayer Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your Name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial, and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and for ever. Amen.

Anthem Remember Your Servants, Lord [Antiphon:] Remember your servants, Lord, when you come in your kingly power. 1 Blessed are the poor in spirit; for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. 2 Blessed are those who mourn; for they shall be comforted. 3 Blessed are the meek; for they shall inherit the earth. 4 Blessed are those who hunger and thirst after righteousness; for they shall be satisfied. 5 Blessed are the merciful; for they shall obtain mercy. 6 Blessed are the pure in heart; for they shall see God. 7 Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called the children of God. 8 Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness' sake; for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. 9 Blessed are you when the world reviles you and persecutes you; and utters all kinds of evil against you falsely for my sake: Rejoice and be exceeding glad; for great is your reward in heaven. [Antiphon:] Remember your servants, Lord, when you come in your kingly power. Text: Matthew 5:3-12, Russian Orthodox liturgy. Music: Russian orthodox chant, arr. Richard Proulx Š 1985, G.I.A.
