The Lighting of the Paschal Candle In the darkness, a new fire is struck by the Presider who then says a prayer of blessing over the newly kindled flame. On the Paschal Candle, the Presider traces the Cross, the Greek letters Α and Ω, and 2021. As he does this, he says, Christ yesterday and today. The beginning and the end: alpha and omega. All time belongs to him and all the ages. To him be glory and power through every age forever. Amen. Five wax nails embedded with incense are inserted into the Candle, marking the Cross. Then the Presider lights the Paschal Candle from the new fire. Bearing the Candle, the Deacon leads the People in procession into the church, pausing three times to sing:
Each person’s candle is lit from the same fire of the Paschal Candle as it is placed in its stand.
The Exsultet The Cantor then begins singing the Easter proclamation: Rejoice now, heavenly hosts and choirs of angels, and let your trumpets shout Salvation for the victory of our mighty King…

The Lord be with you. And also with you. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise. We thank you, Almighty God, for the gift of water. Over it the Holy Spirit moved in the beginning of creation. Through it you led the children of Israel out of their bondage in Egypt into the land of promise. In it your Son Jesus received the baptism of John and was anointed by the Holy Spirit as the Messiah, the Christ, to lead us, through his death and resurrection, from the bondage of sin into everlasting life. We thank you, Father, for the water of Baptism. In it we are buried with Christ in his death. By it we share in his resurrection. Through it we are reborn by the Holy Spirit. Therefore in joyful obedience to your Son, we bring into this fellowship those who come to him in faith, baptizing them in the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Now sanctify this water, we pray you, by the power of your Holy Spirit, that those who here are cleansed from sin and born again may continue for ever in the risen life of Jesus Christ our Savior. To him, to you, and to the Holy Spirit, be all honor and glory, now and for ever. Amen. Through the Paschal mystery, dear friends, we are buried with Christ by Baptism into his death, and raised with him to newness of life. I call upon you, therefore, now that our Lenten observance is ended, to renew the solemn promises and vows of Holy Baptism, by which we once renounced Satan and all his works, and promised to serve God faithfully in his holy Catholic Church. Do you reaffirm your renunciation of evil and renew your commitment to Jesus Christ? I do. Do you believe in God the Father? I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth.
Presider People
Do you believe in Jesus Christ, the Son of God? I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead.
Presider People
Do you believe in God the Holy Spirit? I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting.
Presider People
Will you continue in the apostles’ teaching and fellowship, in the breaking of bread, and in the prayers? I will, with God’s help.
Presider People
Will you persevere in resisting evil, and, whenever you fall into sin, repent and return to the Lord? I will, with God’s help.
Presider People
Will you proclaim by word and example the Good News of God in Christ? I will, with God’s help.
Presider People
Will you seek and serve Christ in all persons, loving your neighbor as I will, with God’s help.
Presider People
Will you strive for justice and peace among all people, and respect the dignity of every human being? I will, with God’s help.
Presider
Will you cherish the wondrous works of God, and protect the beauty and integrity of all creation?
People
I will, with God’s help.
Presider
May Almighty God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has given us a new birth by water and the Holy Spirit, and bestowed upon us the forgiveness of sins, keep us in eternal life by his grace, in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Amen.

The Word of God The Lessons The Epistle
Romans 6:1–13
Dying and Rising with Christ What then are we to say? Should we continue in sin in order that grace may abound? 2 By no means! How can we who died to sin go on living in it? 3 Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? 4 Therefore we have been buried with him by baptism into death, so that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, so we too might walk in newness of life. 5 For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we will certainly be united with him in a resurrection like his. 6 We know that our old self was crucified with him so that the body of sin might be destroyed, and we might no longer be enslaved to sin. 7 For whoever has died is freed from sin. 8 But if we have died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with him. 9 We know that Christ, being raised from the dead, will never die again; death no longer has dominion over him. 10 The death he died, he died to sin, once for all; but the life he lives, he lives to God. 11 So you also must consider yourselves dead to sin and alive to God in Christ Jesus. 12 Therefore, do not let sin exercise dominion in your mortal bodies, to make you obey their passions. 13 No longer present your members to sin as instruments of wickedness, but present yourselves to God as those who have been brought from death to life, and present your members to God as instruments of righteousness.
The Great Easter Alleluia The Alleluia is sung three times at successively higher pitches first by the Schola and followed by the People.

The Gradual (sung by the Schola)
Psalm 114
When Israel came out of Egypt, alleluia, the house of Jacob from a people of strange speech, alleluia. Judah became God’s sanctuary, alleluia, and Israel his dominion, alleluia. The sea beheld it and fled, alleluia, Jordan turned and went back, alleluia. The mountains skipped like rams, alleluia, and the little hills like young sheep, alleluia. What ailed you, O sea, that you fled? alleluia, O Jordan, that you turned back? alleluia. You mountains, that you skipped like rams? alleluia, you little hills like young sheep? alleluia. Tremble, O earth, at the presence of the Lord, alleluia, at the presence of the God of Jacob, alleluia. Who turned the hard rock into a pool of water, alleluia, and flint-stone into a flowing spring, alleluia.

The Holy Gospel
Mark 16:1–8
The Resurrection of Jesus When the sabbath was over, Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James, and Salome bought spices, so that they might go and anoint him. 2 And very early on the first day of the week, when the sun had risen, they went to the tomb. 3 They had been saying to one another, “Who will roll away the stone for us from the entrance to the tomb?” 4 When they looked up, they saw that the stone, which was very large, had already been rolled back. 5 As they entered the tomb, they saw a young man, dressed in a white robe, sitting on the right side; and they were alarmed. 6 But he said to them, “Do not be alarmed; you are looking for Jesus of Nazareth, who was crucified. He has been raised; he is not here. Look, there is the place they laid him. 7 But go, tell his disciples and Peter that he is going ahead of you to Galilee; there you will see him, just as he told you.” 8 So they went out and fled from the tomb, for terror and amazement had seized them; and they said nothing to anyone, for they were afraid.

The GREAT VIGIL OF EASTER, the most ancient liturgy of the church, is comprised of four parts: the Service of Light, in which we invite you to celebrate the new fire kindled from which to light the Paschal (Easter) Candle; the Service of Lessons, in which God’s saving deeds in history are retold; the Renewal of the Baptismal Covenant, in which believers reaffirm their commitment to the Christian way; and THE HOLY EUCHARIST, which breaks the Lenten fast with the proclamation of the Easter Alleluia. The vesture of the sacred ministers is white, symbolizing the light of Christ. We will ring handbells!
