Vidi Aquam

(sung by Schola as all are asperged with Baptismal waters)

I BEHELD A STREAM OF WATER * Vidi Aquam 87.87.87 I beheld a stream of water flowing from the Temple’s side, from the right side forth proceeding in a pure life-giving tide: Alleluia, alleluia, risen is the Lamb who died. And all they to whom that water with its cleansing power came knew the blessing of salvation and forever will proclaim: Alleluia, alleluia, earth and heaven praise God’s name. Glory be to God Almighty, with the co-eternal Son and the life-bestowing Spirit ever Three and ever One. Alleluia, alleluia! while unending ages run. Words: STANZAS, Carl P. Hymn of Praise

All glory be to God on high

Hymnal 421

Collect of the Day Presider O God, you have prepared for those who love you such good things as surpass our understanding: Pour into our hearts such love towards you, that we, loving you in all things and above all things, may obtain your promises, which exceed all that we can desire; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. People Amen. 4

THE LITURGY OF THE WORD First Reading

Acts 16:9–15

During the night Paul had a vision: there stood a man of Macedonia pleading with him and saying, "Come over to Macedonia and help us." When he had seen the vision, we immediately tried to cross over to Macedonia, being convinced that God had called us to proclaim the good news to them. We set sail from Troas and took a straight course to Samothrace, the following day to Neapolis, and from there to Philippi, which is a leading city of the district of Macedonia and a Roman colony. We remained in this city for some days. On the sabbath day we went outside the gate by the river, where we supposed there was a place of prayer; and we sat down and spoke to the women who had gathered there. A certain woman named Lydia, a worshiper of God, was listening to us; she was from the city of Thyatira and a dealer in purple cloth. The Lord opened her heart to listen eagerly to what was said by Paul. When she and her household were baptized, she urged us, saying, "If you have judged me to be faithful to the Lord, come and stay at my home." And she prevailed upon us. Gradual Psalm

Second Reading

Psalm 67

Revelation 21:10, 22–22:5

In the spirit the angel carried me away to a great, high mountain and showed me the holy city Jerusalem coming down out of heaven from God. I saw no temple in the city, for its temple is the Lord God the Almighty and the Lamb. And the city has no need of sun or moon to shine on it, for the glory of God is its light, and its lamp is the Lamb. The nations will walk by its light, and the kings of the earth will bring their glory into it. Its gates will never be shut by day-- and there will be no night there. People will bring into it the glory and the 5

honor of the nations. But nothing unclean will enter it, nor anyone who practices abomination or falsehood, but only those who are written in the Lamb's book of life. Then the angel showed me the river of the water of life, bright as crystal, flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb through the middle of the street of the city. On either side of the river is the tree of life with its twelve kinds of fruit, producing its fruit each month; and the leaves of the tree are for the healing of the nations. Nothing accursed will be found there any more. But the throne of God and of the Lamb will be in it, and his servants will worship him; they will see his face, and his name will be on their foreheads. And there will be no more night; they need no light of lamp or sun, for the Lord God will be their light, and they will reign forever and ever. The Holy Gospel

John 14:23–29

Jesus said to Judas (not Iscariot), "Those who love me will keep my word, and my Father will love them, and we will come to them and make our home with them. Whoever does not love me does not keep my words; and the word that you hear is not mine, but is from the Father who sent me. "I have said these things to you while I am still with you. But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you everything, and remind you of all that I have said to you. Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled, and do not let them be afraid. You heard me say to you, `I am going away, and I am coming to you.' If you loved me, you would rejoice that I am going to the Father, because the Father is greater than I. And now I have told you this before it occurs, so that when it does occur, you may believe." Apostles’ Creed Presider I believe in God, People the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

Prayers of the People Blessing & Farewell to Our Residents Sharon Christner and Gabe Colombo have completed the Student Monastic Residency Program, and we bid them a farewell and blessing amidst much gratitude and joy.

Invitation Presider People

Behold what you are. May we become what we receive.*

*These words come from St. Augustine of Hippo (354-430) in a sermon on the Holy Eucharist in which he reflected on “one of the deep truths of Christian faith: through our participation in the sacraments (particularly Baptism and Eucharist), we are transformed into the Body of Christ, given for the world.”

Announcements Welcome We are delighted to welcome you to the Monastery today, either in-person or online. If you are a visitor, or new to the Monastery or Community, please take a moment to introduce yourself to one of the Brothers following the Eucharist. If you are joining us online, drop us a note telling us where you are joining us from.

The Chapel is Open!! The chapel now open for in-person worship, and private prayer, throughout the day. The doors will open before Morning Prayer and close after Compline (Tuesday – Saturday), and from Morning Prayer to after Evening Prayer on Sundays. You are welcome to join us for in-person worship, or for a time of private prayer. We ask that all who make use of the chapel for private prayer, or who join us for in-person worship, be fully vaccinated, boosted and wear a mask. Extra masks are always available at the back of the church near the organ. A full schedule of services is available on our website www.SSJE.org

Residents’ Farewell Each spring we Brothers experience the bittersweet moment when we give thanks to God for the gift of our Residents on the occasion of their moving on into the next stage of their life pilgrimage. This morning in the context of the Holy Eucharist, we will celebrate our residents Sharon and Gabe and give thanks for all the ways they have blessed us by their ministry to and with us. Please join us as we say thank you and bid them a fond farewell.

Retreat Day The community’s monthly retreat day is Wednesday, 25 May. We will not pray Compline on Tuesday, 24 May, or Morning Prayer and Compline on Wednesday, 25 May. On retreat day in June will be Wednesday, 22 June.

Boston Calling From past experience we have discovered that we cannot compete with Boston Calling which takes place the weekend of 27 – 29 May. As a result, the chapel will close after Evening Prayer on Thursday, 26 May. We will open for the Sunday Eucharist on 29 May, and close again following the Eucharist. We will reopen for Morning Prayer on Tuesday, 31 May. Except for the Sunday Eucharist we will not livestream our services during this time. We regret having to do this.

14

Away Week The chapel will close after Evening Prayer on Sunday, 5 June and reopen for Morning Prayer on Tuesday, 14 June. We will not be livestreaming during this time. This is one of our quarterly away weeks when Brothers are able to have their own personal retreat, visit their families, or take some vacation time. Please pray for the gift of renewal, rest, and refreshment for the Brothers during this time.

Collection for Ukraine The Brothers will be making a second gift to support work among Ukrainian refugees, later this week. If you would like to make a gift towards this you may do so via the collection today. Please make your check payable to SSJE and mark it clearly Ukraine on the memo line. Cash should be placed in an envelope marked Ukraine. Both can be placed in the offering basket marked Ukraine. If you would like to make a gift towards this via credit card, please be in touch with our colleague Jerome Berkeley at jberkeley@ssje.org This gift will be made to the Bishop’s Discretionary Fund of the Convocation of Episcopal Churches in Europe. Many will remember Bishop Mark Eddington, formerly of this Diocese who is now the Episcopal bishop in Europe. Please hold Bishop Mark and the Convocation, as well as their work with refugees in your prayers.

Livestreaming We livestream Evening Prayer and Compline throughout the week, as well as the Sunday and Tuesday Eucharists. If you cannot join us in person, please join us online.

Holy Communion For the time being, we will continue to administer Holy Communion by Bread only. Please remember that the Church catholic has always taught that the fullness of the Sacrament is received even when only one form is received.

Gluten Free Wafers at Holy Communion Please indicate to the Brother administering Holy Communion if that is your preference.

Monastery Guesthouse Limited space and times are available for stays in the guesthouse between now and the end of July. If a time of quiet and retreat would be helpful, please check our website for more information. We ask that all guests be fully vaccinated and boosted, and to be prepared to wear masks in the chapel.

Saturday Evening Prayer Evening Prayer (Evensong) is one of the glories of Anglicanism. The community sings Evening Prayer at 6:00 PM Wednesday through Saturday and at 4:00 PM on Sunday. Saturday Evening Prayer is especially beautiful. Now that the chapel is open again, why not make attending Evening Prayer on Saturday, or another evening during the week, part of your regular pattern.

Parking on Memorial Drive Memorial Drive is now closed to traffic and parking on both Saturdays and Sundays from 8:00 AM to 7:00 PM. Unfortunately, this means that parking in front of the Monastery is no longer available on Sundays. This will last until Sunday, 18 December. The City of Cambridge is soliciting feedback about the closing of Memorial Drive and would like to hear of any unintended consequences. If you would like to be in touch with the City concerning this, you may contact Joe Barr JBarr@cambridgema.gov
