THE LITURGY OF THE WORD First Reading
Acts 16:16–34
With Paul and Silas, we came to Philippi in Macedonia, a Roman colony, and, as we were going to the place of prayer, we met a slave girl who had a spirit of divination and brought her owners a great deal of money by fortune-telling. While she followed Paul and us, she would cry out, "These men are slaves of the Most High God, who proclaim to you a way of salvation." She kept doing this for many days. But Paul, very much annoyed, turned and said to the spirit, "I order you in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her." And it came out that very hour. But when her owners saw that their hope of making money was gone, they seized Paul and Silas and dragged them into the marketplace before the authorities. When they had brought them before the magistrates, they said, "These men are disturbing our city; they are Jews and are advocating customs that are not lawful for us as Romans to adopt or observe." The crowd joined in attacking them, and the magistrates had them stripped of their clothing and ordered them to be beaten with rods. After they had given them a severe flogging, they threw them into prison and ordered the jailer to keep them securely. Following these instructions, he put them in the innermost cell and fastened their feet in the stocks. About midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the prisoners were listening to them. Suddenly there was an earthquake, so violent that the foundations of the prison were shaken; and immediately all the doors were opened and everyone's chains were unfastened. When the jailer woke up and saw the prison doors wide open, he drew his sword and was about to kill himself, since he supposed that the prisoners had escaped. But Paul shouted in a loud voice, "Do not harm yourself, for we are all here." The jailer called for lights, and rushing in, he fell down trembling before Paul and Silas. Then he brought them outside 5
and said, "Sirs, what must I do to be saved?" They answered, "Believe on the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved, you and your household." They spoke the word of the Lord to him and to all who were in his house. At the same hour of the night he took them and washed their wounds; then he and his entire family were baptized without delay. At the end of the visions I, John, heard these words: "See, I am coming soon; my reward is with me, to repay according to everyone's work. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the first and the last, the beginning and the end." Blessed are those who wash their robes, so that they will have the right to the tree of life and may enter the city by the gates. "It is I, Jesus, who sent my angel to you with this testimony for the churches. I am the root and the descendant of David, the bright morning star." The Spirit and the bride say, "Come." Jesus prayed for his disciples, and then he said. "I ask not only on behalf of these, but also on behalf of those who will believe in me through their word, that they may all be one. As you, Father, are in me and I am in you, may they also be in us, so that the world may believe that you have sent me. The glory that you have given me I have given them, so that they may be one, as we are one, I in them and you in me, that they may become completely one, so that the world may know that you have sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me. Apostles’ Creed Presider I believe in God, People the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

Announcements Welcome We are delighted to welcome you to the Monastery today, either in-person or online. If you are a visitor, or new to the Monastery or Community, please take a moment to introduce yourself to one of the Brothers following the Eucharist. If you are joining us online, drop us a note telling us where you are joining us from. The Chapel is Open!! The chapel now open for in-person worship, and private prayer, throughout the day. The doors will open before Morning Prayer and close after Compline (Tuesday – Saturday), and from Morning Prayer to after Evening Prayer on Sundays. You are welcome to join us for in-person worship, or for a time of private prayer. We ask that all who make use of the chapel for private prayer, or who join us for in-person worship, be fully vaccinated, boosted and wear a mask. Extra masks are always available at the back of the church near the organ. A full schedule of services is available on our website www.SSJE.org Boston Calling From past experience we have discovered that we cannot compete with Boston Calling which is taking place this weekend of 27 – 29 May. As a result, the chapel closed after Evening Prayer on Thursday, 26 May. We will close again following today’s Eucharist. We will reopen for Morning Prayer on Tuesday, 31 May. Except for the Sunday Eucharist we will not livestream our services during this time. We regret having to do this.

Away Week The chapel will close after Evening Prayer on Sunday, 5 June and reopen for Morning Prayer on Tuesday, 14 June. We will not be livestreaming during this time. This is one of our quarterly away weeks when Brothers are able to have their own personal retreat, visit their families, or take some vacation time. Please pray for the gift of renewal, rest, and refreshment for the Brothers during this time. Retreat Day The community’s next retreat day is Wednesday, 29 June. We will not pray Compline on Tuesday, 28 June, or Morning Prayer and Compline on Wednesday, 29 June. Our retreat day in July will be Wednesday, 27 July. Livestreaming We livestream Evening Prayer and Compline throughout the week, as well as the Sunday and Tuesday Eucharists. If you cannot join us in person, please join us online. Holy Communion For the time being, we will continue to administer Holy Communion by Bread only. Please remember that the Church catholic has always taught that the fullness of the Sacrament is received even when only one form is received. Gluten Free Wafers at Holy Communion Please indicate to the Brother administering Holy Communion if that is your preference. Monastery Guesthouse Limited space and times are available for stays in the guesthouse between now and the end of July. If a time of quiet and retreat would be helpful, please check our website for more information. We ask that all guests be fully vaccinated and boosted, and to be prepared to wear masks in the chapel.

Saturday Evening Prayer Evening Prayer (Evensong) is one of the glories of Anglicanism. The community sings Evening Prayer at 6:00 PM Wednesday through Saturday and at 4:00 PM on Sunday. Saturday Evening Prayer is especially beautiful. Now that the chapel is open again, why not make attending Evening Prayer on Saturday, or another evening during the week, part of your regular pattern. Parking on Memorial Drive Memorial Drive is now closed to traffic and parking on both Saturdays and Sundays from 8:00 AM to 7:00 PM. Unfortunately, this means that parking in front of the Monastery is no longer available on Sundays. This will last until Sunday, 18 December. The City of Cambridge is soliciting feedback about the closing of Memorial Drive and would like to hear of any unintended consequences.
