American House resident, Kathryn Myrand, celebrated her 100th birthday on March 31st. At her birthday celebration, Mayor Andy Swift presented her with the following proclamation:

Kathryn Myrand is celebrating her 100th birthday on March 31, 2024; and

WHEREAS ... Kathryn was born in Midland, Pennsylvania and moved to Ecorse, Michigan around the age of three when her father accepted a job offer at Great Lakes Steel. She attended St. Francis Xavier School for 12 years.

WHEREAS ... Kathryn met her husband, Leonard, while in school and they got married on August 25, 1945. They were together for 50 years before he passed away. Kathryn and Leonard had 4 beautiful children together and have many grandchildren.

WHEREAS ... Kathryn worked as a Telephone Operator at Michigan Bell and then at Great Lakes Steel. She loved to socialize and dance in her free time. Now, her desire is to live a quiet and peaceful lifestyle where she can relax and enjoy her family. We wish Kathryn a very happy 100th birthday.

Our Memorial Day event is right around the corner

My fellow Riverview residents, for the past few months this article has dealt with some pretty important topics. This month I’d like to lighten it up with some news of events coming up. The Riverview Veterans Memorial Day Committee will be hosting their Memorial Day Event on Monday, May 27th. We don’t call this a celebration because it is more of a somber/ reflection type of event. It is with great respect we honor all those killed in action and especially Riverview servicemen and women. The event begins with a motorcycle ride from the American Legion and ends at the Riverview Veteran’s Memorial behind the library. The riders will arrive at 11:00am and will do a half loop around the Reflection Pond. I suggest you arrive early as it does get crowded around the Memorial. This event is a partnership between the Riverview American Legion Post 389 and the City of Riverview.

One of the many events we love looking forward to is Summerfest. This annual free carnival and concerts begin on Thursday, June 13th and concludes on Saturday, June 15th with a remarkable fireworks display. The major sponsor of Summerfest this year is one of our businesses, Green Acres. At the same time Summerfest starts, the Riverview Highlands will be hosting its 4th Annual Riverview Highlands Golf Invitational. Each year this event nearly sells out. So if you’re interested in putting a foursome

together for this corporate style event, please contact Mike Kettler at the Highlands soon. His email address is mkettler@cityofriverview.com and phone number is 734-479-2266. Funds raised from this golf outing are used to finance the improvements that have occurred over the past several years.

Our “Concerts-in-the-Parks” are going into overdrive this summer. This year starting on Wednesday, July 10, the very popular band Shakedown opens our summer series. Following each Wednesday will be D’Tour, Marleyritaville, Capture Detroit, Wayback Machine, Oneders, Katmandu, and finishes with Sunset Boulevard on Wednesday, August 28th. Another new business, JARS Cannabis, graciously offered to sponsor the entire series. Please come out to Young Patriot’s Park and bring a friend or relative to enjoy a comfortable summer evening listening to some great music. Don’t forget to bring a lawn chair or blanket and an umbrella to cover yourself from the sun.

A heartfelt appreciation is extended to the Wendy Court residents south of Hale Street. These dedicated individuals joined forces to enhance the beauty of the median on their street, meticulously weeding and planting flowers out of their own pocket.

And in more uplifting news, Riverview has reason to celebrate!

Wayne County has granted $20,000 for Senior Services and an additional $320,000 in Community Development Block Grant funds for the enhancement of the Pickle Ball courts at Vreeland Park.

GR Teacher Turns World into a Classroom Through Travel Program

For the past two decades, art and photography teacher Anna Fedor has turned the world into a living classroom for students at Gabriel Richard Catholic High School by sharing her love of travel. Each year, Fedor takes a group of students and families to Europe during spring break, a tradition that enriches her students’ learning experiences in ways that classroom settings often cannot. Last month, Fedor traveled to Greece and Turkey, her 21st trip with the school.

“It’s exciting to witness history come alive for our students and to see them connect to the world around them,” Fedor said.

Destinations vary from year to year based upon interest, and past trips have included England, Ireland, Wales, France, Scotland, Germany and Italy. All trips include an EF Education First tour guide who is fluent in the destination country’s language and is well-versed on its history and culture.

During their tours, GR students visit historical sites, museums, and natural wonders where they can see, touch and experience what they’ve learned at school. Over the years, they have gazed at artwork at the Louvre, visited the Eiffel Tower, walked the beaches of Normandy, kissed the Blarney Stone, and climbed the steps of the Parthenon.

Fedor said that a trip to Europe would not be complete without exploring its many cathedrals and abbeys. Her groups have visited several, including the famous Notre-Dame Cathedral de Paris, the Canterbury Cathedral where St. Thomas Becket was martyred, the Abbey of Mont Saint Michel, and Westminster Abbey where she once photographed Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip as they left Maundy Thursday service.

While much planning goes into each of her trips, Fedor said she believes that a little luck and divine intervention have created some serendipitous moments over the years. For example, she has seen the pope on all six of her tours to the Vatican, including St. John Paul II, Pope Benedict XVI and Pope Francis. During one trip, Fedor’s group was also able to attend Easter Sunday Mass with Pope Benedict in St. Peter’s Square.

Although Fedor has just recently returned from her last excursion, she is already making plans to take next year’s group of students and families to Italy.

“I never get tired of walking in the footsteps of history, enjoying great food, and making memories with my GR family,” she said.

Two-wheel tribute: Motorcycle ride to honor our heroes

The Riverview Veterans Memorial Day Ceremony Committee, in collaboration with American Legion Post #389 and the City of Riverview, invites motorcycle enthusiasts to join them for a memorable Memorial Day Ride.

Mark your calendars for Monday, May 27, 2024 for this special event. Starting at 10:00 AM, riders will gather at American Legion Post #389, situated at 17116 Quarry Road in Riverview. The staging process will begin at 10:30 AM, with departure set for 10:48 AM. Led by local law enforcement, the convoy will embark on a route towards Young Patriots Park.

The ride itself will be a 10 to 15-minute journey, including a short ride on grass near the fire department. As we arrive at Young Patriots Park, riders will have the opportunity to pause and reflect by the serene reflection pond, honoring the bravery and sacrifice of all Veterans.

Once parked along Riverview Veterans Memorial Drive, adjacent to the library, riders will join the Memorial Day Ceremony, kicking off at 11:00 AM.

Comedy fundraiser launches Riverview Rotary Club

To assist Riverview in launching its own Rotary Club, Southgate Rotary hosted a “Night of Comedy” fundraiser at the Riverview Community Center. This event, held on Saturday, March 23rd, was a sold-out success, with proceeds aimed at kickstarting the new Riverview Club.

The evening began with a warm welcome from City Manager Mr. Jeff Dobek, followed by introductions from the mayor and city council members. Attendees included community leaders from neighboring cities, such as Southgate Mayor Joseph Kuspa and Southgate Council President Zoey Kuspa, as well as Brownstown Township Supervisor and Rotarian, Ed Smith.

Guests were treated to laughter-filled performances by comedians Melvin Bender and Tom Massy, accompanied by a delicious dinner courtesy of Arnaldo’s Banquet Center.

The fundraiser garnered approximately $1,500 in support of the Riverview Rotary. Until the new club reaches 20

members, it will operate as a satellite of the Southgate Rotary. Keep an eye out for updates on the kick-off meeting, expected in late May or early June.

Community call for cereal

Mia Kovalchik, a student at Huntington Elementary, is reaching out to the community for support in her mission to collect cereal for the 2024 Children’s Hospital of Michigan Cereal Drive.

Last year, Mia initiated her own team, Mia’s Mission, and successfully raised 11,952 servings of cereal with the assistance of Huntington Elementary, her hockey team, family, and friends. With her grandmother’s involvement in Children’s Hospital of Michigan, this endeavor has become a family tradition. Mia is eager to reignite the partnership with the City of Riverview.

Throughout the month of May, Mia will be collecting cereal donations to be presented at the Southgate Kroger collection event on June 1st from 9:00AM-1:00PM. She is seeking the support of Riverview residents to contribute as much cereal as possible to ensure children have breakfast during the summer vacation period.

Mia is offering to deliver collection boxes to interested offices and will arrange for donation pickups before June 1st. Mia is also open to coordinating with the police or fire departments for face-to-face delivery of the cereal to the event at Kroger.

This is an opportunity to support children in Southeast Michigan during the summer months. Mia also mentions that donations of fresh milk from the Michigan United Dairy Associations will accompany the cereal contributions. All donations will be sent to the Taylor Gleaners Warehouse for distribution.

Riverview community delivers Easter feasts to families

The Kiwanis Club of Riverview partnered with the Key Club at Riverview Community High School to provide Easter dinner for 10 families.

President Diane Kinlen spearheaded this vital community service endeavor.

Treasurer Debbie Apkarian and President Kinlen gathered groceries two weeks before Easter, aided by the Meijer store staff who graciously boxed the food for pickup. Kiwanis Director Andy Swift then transported the goods to Seitz Middle School’s cafeteria for overnight storage.

Families, nominated by the Riverview Community School District, were contacted by club representatives and expressed gratitude for the assistance received. President Kinlen conveyed her pride in supporting those in need.

On March 23rd, Kiwanis members, alongside family and Key Club volunteers, convened at the middle school to unpack and repack nearly $700 worth of food for the families. These packed meals, comprising a large ham, vegetables, flour, sugar, soup,

Estate Planning 101

Which plan do you need?

Time to clear up the confusion about Estate Planning ... The following definitions lack legal precision, but makes it easier to get a clear picture of what may be needed in your case.

■ Will – letter of intent of where you want your personal property to go – or not go.

■ Living Will – Documents your wishes during your final days including final healthcare choices and possibly your burial wishes.

■ Trust – This is a “company” that you start, and you become the CEO, “Trustee” and “Settlor.” The company outlives you, but continues to manage your assets as if you were alive by the successor CEO – whom you designate.

■ Power of Attorney – Financial and Healthcare – you need both – the first so someone can pay your bills, the second, sometimes called a Patient Advocate, designates someone to make “hallway at the hospital” decisions to take the stress off the family.

■ Ladybird Deed – probably the best thing that has happened to owning a home. I love these deeds – you grant yourself a life estate – in your own property - but retain the power to sell or borrow against the property. If you do not sell before you pass, this “springs” the house out of your estate, and your heirs have instant ownership, subject to any mortgage or taxes owed or similar.

Again, this is just a general description of the more popular terms – no one choice is a “silver bullet” but depending on how your estate gets planned out you can expedite a clean and clear process for the assets you worked a lifetime to save. Why wouldn’t you want to do that? Stop by or call and make an appointment and I’ll tell you what you’re going to need to do this right.

Wayne Stolt honored with bench and tree dedication

A year after the passing of Chef Wayne Stolt from Riverview Community High School, a dedication ceremony was held in his honor.

On April 29th, work friends, past students and Wayne’s family gathered to remember a man who was known as a kind man, willing to give anyone the shirt off his back, who loved to cook and share his passion, and his

food, with everyone.

A tree was planted in his memory last fall and a bench was placed near the main entrance of RCHS. Special thanks to the culinary program, student council, Miller Metal, and all those who contributed their time and money to create something special for Wayne.

On April 5th, 2024, The Varsity and JV girls’ soccer teams for both Trenton (white) and Riverview held a charity showcase as the two teams raised $6800.00 towards medical costs and heightened awareness for Forest Elementary student Harper Holt, who was recently diagnosed with Sarcoma.

A trip to Europe

Paris offered RCHS students a chance to see some of the world’s most well-known pieces of art; The Mona Lisa and Venus de Milo. The City of Lights did not disappoint with the golden dome of Les Invalides and the sparkling of the Eiffel Tower at night.

The April 2024 solar eclipse was a great learning opportunity at Memorial Elementary - and super fun to watch!

Buc runners find themselves ahead of the field

The Riverview boys track team kicked off the local track campaign in high style recently by winning the Marauder Invitational hosted by Carlson High School.

This year’s event, billed as the “Battle of the Leagues,” saw eight Downriver League squads square off against seven from the Huron League. The only teams not represented at the meet were Monroe Jefferson from the Huron League and Allen Park from the Downriver League.

But no matter who was running, Riverview proved itself the best team.

The Bucs scored 82.5 points to win handily. Milan was second with 71 points, followed by Carlson (69), Huron (69), Woodhaven (61), Trenton (48), Flat Rock (47), Lincoln Park (41), Southgate (38), Grosse Ile (32), Airport (29), Wyandotte (26.5), Edsel Ford (10), Taylor (9), and SMCC (4).

On the girls side, Riverview finished in the 15-team event with 30 points. The Bucs beat out Airport, Lincoln Park, Trenton, Taylor and Southgate. Monroe St. Mary CC, and Woodhaven tied for the championship, each with 92 points.

Logan Ruffner had the best day of anyone wearing maroon and gold. He won both the 800 meters and the 1,600 meters. The Riverview senior was pushed in each event by Huron junior Lucas Kuhn, but Ruffner was

too tough at the end of each race. Ruffner beat Kuhn 2:00.54-2:01.29 in the half-mile and 4:25.0-4:25.99 in the mile.

Ruffner also ran on the scoring 4x400 and 4x800 relays.

In the 4x800, Ruffner joined teammates Julian Riveria, Israel Garcia, and Hayden Holmes to run 8:28.83, second only to Woodhaven, who clocked 8:23.48.

In the 4x400, the same group, but with Ashton Robinson in place of Holmes, placed third behind Trenton and Huron. Trenton ran 3:34.30, Huron ran 3:35.51, and Riverview ran 3:37.16.

Riverview wound up scoring in 13 of the 17 meet events.

Riverview finished second and seventh in the long jump with Derrick Parker going 20-5 and Dominic Stuck 18.3.25; third and fourth in discus with Magnus Geiger (128-2) and Niko Papadopolous (127-2); fifth and sixth in the 100 meter dash with Parker (11.47) and Robinson (11.59); and fourth and fifth in the 220 with Parker (22.76) and Stuck (23.15).

Holmes was sixth in the two-mile, Rivera was seventh in the 400 meters, Chris Rhea was seventh in the high jump, Trevor Spencer was eighth in the high hurdles, and Max Lockhart

scored by running on two relays, the 4x100 and the 4x200.

The girls were led at the Marauder Invitational by senior Keira Wood, who ran second to Southgate’s Sparrow Centino in the 80 meters and was fourth in the 1,600 meters. Wood ran the shorter race in 2:34.65 and she ran the mile in 5:46.3. The only runners to beat her in the mile were Courtney Bovair of Airport, Bella LaFountain of SMCC, and Centino.

Riverview also got a fifth place effort in the 200 and an eighthplace effort in the 100 out of Kailyn Frierson; a sixth-place performance from Baelei Beasley in the shot put; a seventh from Maddison Lipchik in the 400, and an eighth-place in the 3,200 meters from Daniela Hinojosa.

In addition, the Bucs received relay team points from Alexa Stonier, Ella McFarlane, Destiny Bell, Lipchick, Wood, and Hinojosa.

Shortly after the Marauder Invitational, Riverview showed Monroe Jeffgerson what it had missed as the Bucs throttled the Bears 75-53 in a dual meet held at Jefferson.

Riverview won three of four relays that afternoon and its individual winners were Parker (100, 200), Garcia (800), Ruffner (1,600, 3,200), and Lockhart (shot put).

The Riverview girls lost to Jefferson 90-37.

With the biggest meets of the season ahead, the Riverview boys seem poised for a memorable year.

Riverview faces a Huron League Quad meet with Grosse Ile, SMCC, and Huron at Huron May 7th and then gets set for the area-wide Metro Classic on May 11th, the Michigan High School Athletic Association Division 2 regionals at Chelsea on May 17th, and the Huron League meet at Grosse Ile on May 21st.

For runners who qualify at regionals, this year’s state meet will be June 1st at Hamilton High School.

Lacrosse finding a following Downriver

And now for something a little different.

Lacrosse, a game not widely known and understood around here, has gained a foothold in the area and high schools are slowly taking notice.

Gabriel Richard, here squaring off against Grosse Ile earlier this season, is one of four Downriver schools offering lacrosse. The others are Grosse Ile, Woodhaven, and Allen Park.

Lacrosse is not recognized by the Michigan High School Coaches Association, so there is no state tournament and the season is a rather short one. If you’d like to get to a game and check it out, time is growing very short.

The Richard team has been playing games since March 2nd, but if you want to see the Pioneers in action in 2024 there are just two opportunities left.

Richard hosts Allen Park at 6 p.m. on May 10th and goes to Monroe At. Mary Catholic Central on May 14th before calling it a season.

Riverview 5th-graders embark on outdoor adventure

Riverview 5th Grade students attended the YMCA Storer Camp in Jackson, MI from April 16-19th. Experiencing “The Great Outdoors” made science and related curriculum come alive and more relevant for each student.

Students were able to taste nature, participate in a fire quest, horse sense, build a shelter, experience cold blooded reptiles, and investigate microscopic ponderings.

Evening activities were full of fun and learning for students, and included a huge game of “Predator vs. Prey.” Students ate their meals family style and learned to clean up after themselves after every meal, with the ultimate goal of zero food waste. As students took on the roles of various animals in a food web, they embarked on a journey to find food, water and shelter while trying to escape their predators.

Cloey J. said she will never forget the camp counselors because they were so nice and helped make camp a great experience. Parker R. said the best part of camp was all the activities, especially

holding a snake and eating a worm. Ewwww.

Bradyn R. will always remember singing songs around the campfire.

Loads of talent at the RCHS 2024 Art Show

Our annual Art Show was held Friday, April 19th in the RCHS Alumni Hall and Lobby. The public had a chance to view student artwork from many art mediums created during all three trimesters. Guests were treated to light refreshments, a raffle and melodious music played by student guitarist, Alex Rodd.

“The student work is really something to see. The talent at Riverview is impressive!” said Deanna Matosh.

Raffle winners were: Maddy Hatzel, Madeline Matosh, and Abby/Lizzy Fleming.

Kaavya S. just liked being at camp. She said that everything was amazing, but she really enjoyed being around the horses and the cold-blooded class.

On April 18th, a group of enthusiastic Seitz students gathered at the Detroit Institute of Arts (DIA) for an extraordinary educational experience. The event, aptly named “Putting The Steam in Stem in Conservation,” seamlessly blended art, science, and conservation.

At the heart of this event was the opportunity for students to observe and collaborate with experts from the DIA’s Conservation Lab. As they explored the museum’s impressive collection of artworks, these aspiring scientists delved into the fascinating world of art conservation.

Art conservation is the meticulous practice of preserving and safeguarding artworks for future generations. It involves a delicate balance between scientific investigation, historical context, and artistic integrity.

As the students engaged with the DIA’s conservationists, they witnessed the delicate work of repairing ancient canvases,

analyzing pigments under microscopes, and documenting every detail. They learned that art conservation is not just about science—it’s about preserving stories, emotions, and human creativity.

The Detroit Institute of Arts continues to be a beacon of cultural enrichment, bridging the gap between art and science. Through events like “Putting The Steam in Stem in Conservation,” it inspires the next generation of scientists and artists!

The Downriver Chapter of MARSP (Michigan Association of Retired School Personnel) recently sent out grant applications to the 18 school districts our chapter represents. Teachers were encouraged to apply for a chance to win a $100.00 Visa Gift Card to be used for supplies, equipment, or any resources they need to enhance learning in their classrooms. The following teachers from Riverview were recipients: Amanda Rebeka from Riverview High School, Christi Elemont, Tiffany Crysler, and Jason Saville from Seitz Middle School, Nicole Curry from Forest Elementary, and Jennifer Campau from Riverview Early Childhood

MARSP is a clear, respected voice representing all retired school personnel since 1951. They make certain all members’ voices

and views are heard in Lansing. MARSP is a lobbying partner on critical issues impacting retirees and an authority of the MPSERS pension and healthcare system. Team Rubicon coming to Grosse Ile

...Don’t be alarmed and take to social media with wild rumors of an invasion or a local version of the Texas Chainsaw Massacre. They are members of Team Rubicon, “a veteran-led humanitarian organization, built to serve global communities before, during, and after disasters and crises.” Most notably, they assist FEMA (the Federal Emergency Management Agency) in disaster relief.

On that weekend, 20-25 Team Rubicon volunteers and support staff will be conducting training operations in Chainsaw Proficiency Development. They will be clearing and sawing trees which have been already marked by the Nature Conservancy and Greenways/Open Space committee. Team Rubicon does all their work on the ground and does not climb trees or conduct aerial cutting.

Grosse Ile Nature & Land Conservancy Stewardship Chair, Peter Kantz, explains, “This is a win-win situation for our natural areas and Team Rubicon. They use community projects such as ours for training volunteers and sharpening their skills. They like to cut up fallen trees and generally work on the weekends on projects that simulate disaster response.”...

Fort Street lane closures for railroad crossing rebuilding

Northbound and southbound M-85 (Fort Street) are experiencing shoulder and lane closures between Vreeland and West roads for railroad crossing work. This project is expected to be completed in July. Work involves removing and replacing both railroad crossings and rebuilding the roadway approaches to the crossings. Initial work will include removing trees in the median and building a temporary crossover to maintain M-85 (Fort Street) traffic for upcoming closures at the railroad crossings.

There will always be one lane open in both

directions. Local resident and business access will be maintained.

Downriver Community Band awards scholarship to young musician

... Madelyn Updike emerged victorious in the audition process, securing a coveted scholarship to further her music education. Madelyn, a senior at University Liggett School in Grosse Pointe Woods, has exhibited exceptional skill and dedication to her craft. Alongside her parents and two beloved English sheepdogs, Minnie and Max, Madelyn currently resides in Macomb County.

Since the sixth grade, Madelyn has demonstrated her prowess on the string bass, participating in school orchestra classes and lending her talents to the pit orchestra for various school musicals. She also serves as co-principal of the double bass section in the Oakland Youth Orchestra. Not confined to classical music, Madelyn is equally adept at playing the electric bass when the occasion demands. Beyond her musical endeavors, Madelyn has immersed herself in the robotics program at Liggett for the past seven years, contributing her expertise to the high school team for five of those years. In her leisure time, Madelyn indulges in a diverse array of interests, including reading, baking, cooking, volunteering, video gaming, and pursuits related to engineering and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics)..
