Welcome to the 2022/23 Season

Although the orchestra has been performing for live audiences since November 2020, there are no words to describe the feeling of welcoming back audiences to a full regular season starting in July 2022.

It gives the orchestra great pleasure to finally hold the inaugural concert for Hans Graf who takes the Music Director podium from this season onwards, after two seasons as Chief Conductor. Through the pandemic, he has stayed close to the orchestra and focused on classical period repertoire to keep the orchestra numbers safe. This season, he presents music showcasing the full range of colours of a symphony orchestra.

We mark the return of the full orchestra on stage with the presentation of our audiences favourite large orchestral works from the Romantic period, including Beethoven’s Eroica and Sibelius’s Second Symphonies. We will also present the full symphonic cycles of Brahms and Schumann.

We are proud to showcase performances by a multitude of Singaporean talents, including pianists Churen Li and Abigail Sin, violinist Loh Jun Hong, soprano Victoria Songwei Li, baritone Martin Ng, and three President’s Young Performers. Our annual National Day Concert conducted by Darrell Ang celebrates six world premieres by Singapore’s composers.

For this season, the orchestra is excited to showcase both long-time collaborators and artists that will make their debut in Singapore. We welcome back Han-Na Chang, and conductors making their debuts with the orchestra include Vasily Petrenko, Jukka-Pekka Saraste, and Ludovic Morlot.

We are also thrilled to welcome soloists making their SSO debuts such as pianists Yeol Eum Son, and Seika Ishida, violinist James Ehnes, and trumpet virtuoso Pacho Flores. We are excited to have returning soloists such as our friends Vadim Gluzman, Steven Osborne, and Krystian Zimerman.

Audiences can also look forward to the return of our SSO Pops series, which features a Broadway show for fans of musicals, and Final Fantasy. Film lovers will enjoy a screening of Psycho with live orchestra.

Message from the Music Director

It is an honour and a joy for me to welcome you to my first season now as Music Director of the Singapore Symphony Orchestra.

After two years of disrupted performances, countless and constantly changing restrictions from the pandemic, I am very excited and happy to start this first “free” and full season, and I look forward to seeing our beautiful concert halls filled again with all the happy audience, as hungry for music as we are.

In this new season, we will present you a wide spectrum of beloved and also dearly missed works, a group of outstanding soloists and our wonderful orchestra, finally fully spreading its wings again.

We are also very proud to announce as the upcoming season’s Artist-In-Residence, an extraordinary and precious young Singaporean violinist Chloe Chua. Since her win at the Menuhin Junior Competition in 2018, her musical growth has enchanted an ever-growing international following. We are happy to present her in five concerts with the orchestra, including the continuation of our CD cycle of all Mozart works for violin and Orchestra with the SSO and myself, to be released as an album in the near future.

Another reason for joy and anticipation is my first collaboration with the Singapore Symphony Choruses in the beautiful and tender elegy “Nänie” by Johannes Brahms followed by more choral works that are exciting and majestic.

Together with the musicians of the SSO, I invite you to our 22/23 season and we look forward to offering many memorable concert experiences for you – and with you –in the coming year!

Our Story

Since its founding in 1979, the Singapore Symphony Orchestra (SSO) has been Singapore’s flagship orchestra, touching lives through classical music and providing the heartbeat of the cultural scene in the cosmopolitan citystate.

In addition to its subscription series concerts, the orchestra is well-loved for its outdoor and community appearances, and its significant role educating the young people of Singapore. The SSO has also earned an international reputation for its orchestral virtuosity, having garnered sterling reviews for its overseas tours and many successful recordings. In 2021, the SSO clinched third place in the prestigious Orchestra of the Year Award by Gramophone.

In July 2022, the SSO appointed renowned Austrian conductor Hans Graf as its Music Director, the third in the orchestra’s history after Lan Shui (1997–2019) and Choo Hoey (1979–1996). Prior to this, Hans Graf served as Chief Conductor from 2020, leading the SSO in keeping music alive during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The SSO makes its performing home at the 1,800-seat state-of-the-art Esplanade Concert Hall. More intimate works, as well as outreach and community performances take place at the 673-seat Victoria Concert Hall, the Home of the SSO. The orchestra performs over 60 concerts a year, and its versatile repertoire spans all-time favourites and orchestral masterpieces to exciting cutting-edge premieres. The SSO launched its digital concert hall, SSOLOUNGE, in 2021. Bridging the musical traditions of East and West, Singaporean and Asian musicians and composers are regularly showcased in the concert season.

Beyond Singapore, the SSO has performed in Europe, Asia and the United States. In May 2016 the SSO was invited to perform at the Dresden Music Festival and the Prague Spring International Music Festival. This successful five-city tour of Germany and Prague also included the SSO’s second performance at the Berlin Philharmonie. In 2014 the SSO’s debut at the 120th BBC Proms in London received critical acclaim in the major UK newspapers The Guardian and The Telegraph. The SSO has also performed in China on multiple occasions.

The SSO has released more than 50 recordings, with over 30 on the BIS label. The most recent critically acclaimed albums include a Rachmaninoff box set (2021), Richard Strauss’ “Rosenkavalier and Other Works” (2020), and three Debussy discs “La Mer”, “Jeux” and “Nocturnes”. A Four Seasons album and a complete Mozart Violin Concerto cycle with Chloe Chua and Hans Graf will be released in the near future.

The SSO has also collaborated with such great artists as Vladimir Ashkenazy, Gustavo Dudamel, Charles Dutoit, Joe Hisaishi, Neeme Järvi, Okko Kamu, Hannu Lintu, Andrew Litton, Lorin Maazel, Martha Argerich, Ray Chen, Diana Damrau, Stephen Hough, Janine Jansen, Leonidas Kavakos, Lang Lang, Yo-Yo Ma, Gil Shaham and Krystian Zimerman.

The SSO is part of the Singapore Symphony Group, which also manages the Singapore Symphony Choruses, the Singapore National Youth Orchestra, and the VCHpresents chamber music series, the Singapore International Piano Festival and the biennial National Piano & Violin Competition.

The mission of the Group is to create memorable shared experiences with music. Through the SSO and its affiliated performing groups, we spread the love for music, nurture talent and enrich our diverse communities.

ARTIST-IN-RESIDENCE Chloe Chua

In the music circles, Chloe Chua (b. 2007) first gained international attention when she won a First Prize at the prestigious Menuhin Competition in 2018.

But what happened next was perhaps the true start of her story. Chloe’s innate musicality, astonishing virtuosity and unassuming charm, evident in her performances with the SSO, as well as on the videos of popular comedy duo TwoSet Violin, quickly captured the hearts of the public. Ironically, her formal SSO debut with Mozart’s Violin Concerto No. 2 in Oct 2020 was played to an empty hall due to the pandemic. But the video of this celebrated performance went on to garner over half a million views worldwide, winning overflowing praise from admirers all over the globe, even from those who do not listen to classical music regularly.

In the 2022/23 season, the Singapore Symphony proudly presents Chloe Chua as our Artist-In-Residence. Chloe will collaborate with the SSO and star in a number of programmes, including the release of our Four Seasons album, as well as a set of complete Mozart Violin Concertos, directed by Hans Graf.

TRIBUTE TO BILL EVANS

It’s Feelings, Not Words

Singapore Symphony Orchestra Thomas Clausen Trio Jean Thorel conductor

In 1974 the legendary jazz pianist Bill Evans (1929 –1980) entered the Columbia studios in New York with his trio and a large orchestra to record the remarkable album Symbiosis for the German jazz label MPS. This extraordinary composition by Claus Ogerman (1930 – 2016), a heady, bewitching fusion of symphonic and jazz elements, has never been performed live in concert – until now.

The Singapore Symphony Orchestra pays tribute to the genius of Bill Evans, together with jazz pianist Thomas Clausen and his trio, completing the evening with the Bill Evans Suite written by composer-trumpeter Palle Mikkelborg for the Bill Evans Trio.

We recognise major gifts that help sustain the future of the Singapore Symphony Group. The recognition includes naming of a position in the SSO or in our affiliated performance groups such as the Singapore National Youth Orchestra and the Singapore Symphony Choruses.

SSO CONCERTMASTER, GK GOH CHAIR

In July 2017, the SSO established the GK Goh Chair for the Concertmaster. Mr Goh Geok Khim and his family have been long-time supporters of the national orchestra. We are grateful for the donations from his family and friends towards this Chair, especially Mr and Mrs Goh Yew Lin for their most generous contribution.

Mr Igor Yuzefovich was the inaugural GK Goh Concertmaster Chair from July 2017 to June 2018. The position is currently vacant.

SSO PRINCIPAL CELLO, THE HEAD FOUNDATION CHAIR

In recognition of a generous gift from The HEAD Foundation, we announced the naming of our Principal Cello, “The HEAD Foundation Chair” in November 2019. The Chair is currently held by Principal Cellist Ng Pei-Sian.

SSO PRINCIPAL FLUTE, STEPHEN RIADY CHAIR

In recognition of a generous gift from Dr Stephen Riady, we announced in May 2022 the naming of our Principal Flute, “Stephen Riady Chair”. The position is currently held by our Principal Flutist Jin Ta.

The Singapore National Youth Orchestra demonstrates the extraordinary capability of our inspired youth.

Formally established in 1980, we have welcomed generations of youths to the life-changing experience of playing orchestra music, performing locally as well as representing Singapore at prestigious concert halls and music festivals overseas. Over the years, the SNYO has performed in concert venues and music festivals across Australia, Austria, Germany, Italy, Japan, Malaysia and the United Kingdom. Today we are 180 youths aged 10 to 21, from more than 60 schools across Singapore. The SNYO family consists of a main orchestra and a junior orchestra, where they are guided by professional musicians in rehearsals, sectionals and masterclasses.

The SNYO remains a warm and inviting community for youth who love playing music together, where meaningful friendships are made for life. Our programme is accessible to talented youth musicians with selected individual lesson subsidy and travel grants for tours as well as participation in exchange programmes.

Since 2018, Joshua Tan assumed the position of Principal Conductor for the SNYO and Peter Stark was appointed as its first-ever Principal Guest Conductor. We are recognised by the Ministry of Education as a National Project of Excellence, and part of the Singapore Symphony Group — the arts charity that also manages the Singapore Symphony Orchestra.

Singapore Symphony Choruses

The Singapore Symphony Choruses is a premier choral body comprising the Singapore Symphony Chorus, Singapore Symphony Youth Choir and Singapore Symphony Children’s Choir.

Since 1980, the Choruses have seen membership from diverse ages, backgrounds and nationalities. Regularly sharing the stage with the SSO, the Choruses record and tour with the orchestra, as well as give their own performances in Singapore and abroad. Through holistic training that nurtures artistic growth and personal development, the Choruses aim to articulate an ecosystem of choral excellence. Repertoire for the respective choruses straddle musical worlds and styles, ranging from orchestral masterpieces to a cappella favourites, and spanning the Renaissance to contemporary 21st-century music.

In the first year of the pandemic, the Choruses released a music video, “We Will Get There” to rally the nation. In 2021, the Choruses challenged the boundaries of remote collaborations in music-making, and presented a one-of-itskind joint choral production “Longing”, entirely enabled by technology.

Celebrating Choral Excellence

Singing is a joyful experience, and singing together is a celebration. The Singapore Symphony Chorus offers talented and passionate choristers a platform to come together to perform great symphonic works at the highest standards. In coming together in their shared love for music, the Chorus is a warm community of like-minded choristers, that represents the pinnacle of choral excellence in Singapore.

Since its first performance on 13 June 1980, the Chorus has established itself as one of the finest symphony choruses in the region. The Chorus has performed with renowned conductors including Okko Kamu, Lan Shui, Lim Yau, Masaaki Suzuki and Sofi Jeannin – amassing a wide repertoire such as Rachmaninov’s The Bells, Arvo Pärt’s Te Deum, Britten’s War Requiem, and Bach’s St John Passion, amongst others.

Inspiring Choral Passion

Comprised of Singapore’s finest young choristers aged 17 to 28, the Singapore Symphony Youth Choir is an energetic ensemble inaugurated in 2016 to complement the SSO with a chorus of vibrant voices.

Exploring the best of different musical worlds and styles, the Youth Choir has performed Scriabin’s Prometheus, Puccini’s La bohème, as well as recorded Borodin’s Polovtsian Dances and Mahler’s Symphony No. 2. Within the last seasons, the Youth Choir has had opportunities to perform with world renowned conductors and tour with the SSC and SSO, to present at the Dewan Filharmonik Petronas in Kuala Lumpur. In 2021, at the height of the pandemic, the Youth Choir continually challenged and overcame performing limitations to produce a digital production of its own, “Where I Belong”.

Nurturing Choral Brilliance

Formed in 2006, the Singapore Symphony Children’s Choir has established itself as the leading children’s choir in Singapore. With over 200 members aged 9 to 18, the choir enriches young singers through holistic choral training that nurtures artistic growth and personal development.

The Children's Choir has performed great choral masterpieces with the SSO and with distinguished conductors such as Lim Yau, Claus Peter Flor, Sofi Jeannin, François-Xavier Roth and Julie Desbordes. It has toured and performed at the Philharmonie de Paris in collaboration with Maîtrise de Radio France, as well as at Dewan Filharmonik Petronas in Kuala Lumpur with the Malaysian Philharmonic Youth Orchestra in concert.

In Singapore, the Children's Choir has an active performing calendar. It has sung at the Istana, shared the stage with critically acclaimed The King’s Singers, and presented at the 33rd ASEAN Summit. The choir actively commissions and performs works by Darius Lim, Zechariah Goh, and Cultural Medallion winner Kelly Tang, amongst many others.
