My name is Stavros and I am an Architect Engineer with a Diploma from the NTUA of Athens. Through my years of study and practice I have developed exceptional designing skills in the fields of architecture and architecture structure, from conception to formation drawings, as well as gaining greater understanding of structural mechanics and construction details. Every conception I have designed was envisioned with the need to surpass the past. I am always striving to produce work that incorporates new knowledge and bold, innovative concepts, within an interdisciplinary team. As a person, I hold strong values and pride myself on being a kind, conscientious and perceptive person. I firmly believe such principles help inform much of my design awareness. At the same time, my passion for research lead me to the exploration of other scientific fields, especially those of biology, biotechnology and material research (smart, physical and biomaterials). There I find a new evolving perspective for architecture and life.

Description_
Biologically inspired system for adaptation to dynamic environmental conditions

_ kypseles . Stavros Skamakis
This hypothesis is a biologically inspired system and a result of research that took place in my diploma project and is a concept that still evolving.
It is an elastomer unit that on open mode is full of water and repeated to great a ‘‘water wall’’. The Waterhive System is facing south behind a glass partition to absorb most sufficient the solar rays. The concept is an alternation of the ‘‘Trombe wall’’. Goal is the thermal warming of the room and in the summer, to allow the better ventilation of the room. It’s a system that cannot yet completely warm the room but above all an interactive structure that respond with the ambient temperature.
The issue concerns the environmental integration of the architectural structure. Inefficient design and lack of technological knowledge make human spend large amounts of power and makes urban life unsustainable. As a result, two mayor goals are defined, power independence and environmental harmonization. The source of inspiration and knowledge are the plants and through their study a hypothesis arose. Also, the hypothesis consist of a model. The model will be created with low power and financial construction cost, with the goal to create a better indoor environment with almost zero consumption.

Summer mode:
The elastomer units (waterhives) were filled with water. Due to the fact that each unit structure expands by 20 - 30%, a “wall” emerges. The black metal sheets heat the water inside and the air around, and with natural ventilation warm air goes deeper into the living space.
With a small pump the water inside the Waterhive System is removed and the units return to their original form due to their elasticity and memory shape. The glass unit in front is open allowing the natural ventilation of the space.

The theme of my diploma project arose from the great absence of student accommodation in the region of Attica, in Greece. Therefore I decided to design accommodation for the students of the faculty of Agriculture, who have been temporarily hosted elsewhere.
Site of intervetion
Concept Diagram
The area has an introverted and disagreeable character with large industrial shells and irregular streets on the west side and a dense urban environment on the east side. The residences are in the middle of these two contrary sides. In this project, aside from social and economic reasons, I studied the history and the urban condition of the district and developed a scenario (concept). After conducting research on site near the university in the district of Votanicos I set some parameters:
Conception
-The building should be near the university, so that access could be easy and automatically secure free time for the students. -To avoid major roads. -To avoid disturbing activities that exist in the area. -To improve the quality of the district which although is in the centre of Attica was never in official urban plans.
The design expressed with a closed and solid shell that opens (“dissolve) to welcome public and social spaces. A path is created, as well as a restaurant, gym, an indoor and small outdoor amphitheatre and outdoor planted sites. A cube shaped structure remains solid to keep the communal uses of the students private. Although the cube is not entirely introverted, it can open so that it can merge with the public path. The cube has a self-managed character, also every private space is at the upper floors (restrooms, common spaces and kitchens) and on the ground floors are larger communal spaces, including reading halls, with everything organized around an atrium.

Materials:
The main structural element is steel. Some vertical walls and elevators are made from concrete coated with light ochre (kourasanit). The concrete is the unifying element that connects the residences with the public uses on the ground. The shell expressed with a perforate timber structure. The fillings are from plasterboard and cement.
Important parameters: [ Concept ]
-A large amount of open spaces was necessary -The shape of the volumes emerged from the sun orientation -The path is nonlinear, to create rudimentary wandering

BIOCLIMATIC PRINCIPLES A matter of great importance from the beginning was the sustainably approach. There were analysed environmental friendly methods for better energy efficiency of the building, like wetlands, raingardens, earth tubes, shadings techniques and also light shelves, smart materials and many others new applications.
Autumn sun orientation
Because of the Mediterranean climate of Greece, we have used an outer protective surface (wood structure), wetlands for water cleaning, external shutters, creepers in the west and the roofs, double glazing, trees for shading and ventilation and the concept of the waterhives. Additionally, it was analysed for the main seasons the more efficient distance between each architecture volume, so in the end we could achieve better insolation and ventilation, for each one of them.

Wetlands Wetlands were placed within a certain distance of the building area for better water purification. The purification reuses grey water that was used on showers and bathroom’s sinks. This is similar with the 38% of the total use. The 5% of purified water is for the water beehives and the rest 33% for the toilets.
Rain gardens Cause of the low construction cost and easy maintenance, rain gardens were placed in three separate areas. The number and the location is relative with the roof morphology, easy approach and aesthetic principals.

Main street view
The student project is located in the centre of Athens, near the Omonoia square. A location characterized by multi-storey buildings, very few open spaces and intense traffic flow of vehicles and pedestrians.
Due to lack of public spaces we gathered all the necessary commercial uses in one tall elevated volume, with this move we achieve to realise a space in the middle for social interaction. Furthermore, to enliven more the “plaza” we gathered around workshops and other important uses, like a cafe, a restaurant and additionally, some commercial uses.
The Concept
THE CONCEPT With my fellow student and the valuable guidance of our Professor Andreas Kourkoulas we design a “projector” that shows the fashionable use of the space. The larger part of the building designed in a form of a screen, long and narrow in shape with the willing to illustrate and show the fashion inside. This was achieved either with digital projections or only with the glassed north view that its transparency allows to see the inside activity, where people walk, seek, discuss or try on clothes. In the end the idea came from a modern object, but it’s still remain a design with sublime of a public building. 开 猀愀氀攀猀℀℀ 开开 搀攀猀椀最渀 开 开 樀漀椀渀 甀猀 渀漀眀 氀攀洀攀

The main access points
The main outdoor spaces
In the dense urban environment of Athens, it was given to us an “L” shape area to design one primary school with 6 classes. The special shape of the planning area lead me to a 2D curved form building, where I created two main open-air spaces that can be defined like two hugs that protect and collect the main outdoor activities of the children. The larger outdoor space has private character, placed in front of the classes for natural contact and easy access, while the smaller space is more public and works as a relief-function for the restaurant. The curved shape also help me to make the building “warmer” and interesting for the children. In addition, the shape helped for the best insolation due to daylight. Some extra uses had placed like parasites through the main axis, there were hosted ancillary uses, like one canteen and locker rooms. The design process lasted for one semester, where usually two or three students worked together, compared to few students who worked alone. A large number of sketches, plans and physical models were made to achieve the final result.

Sustainable design The curved form not only emerged for the needs and aesthetic demands of the project but it was required for the best ventilation and obtain the maximum solar insolation. Although due to very warm spring and summer seasons there was a necessity to design a shade system with wood blinds. Also, the side to side opening design had created airy spaces and perfect conditions for educational purposes. The materials used mostly are concrete, wood and glass as well as materials with low embodied construction energy and aluminium for window frames.

In this project, I designed the masterplan for a land of 80 hectares and zoom to scale 1:100, where I designed the block C. The design plan is for 500 residents and consist of residences 15 hectares, public uses 2,5 hectares, culture and leisure is approximately 600 sqm and with maximum permissible high 13 meters.
c
Firstly, the residences were organized to follow the existing urban plan and design the incomplete road system with the necessary prospective for estimated use in the future. Secondly, the requested public uses were designed near the main axis that leads on a jetty into the sea. The rest area was designed with zones of evergreen and deciduous trees and bushes and the paths was designed with the highter goal of giving the feeling of wandering.
MASTER PLAN
Due to lack of time, the overall project was designed especially in ground plans and sketches, but with full consciousness of the rich in variety landscape, that I was designing. In the end, I was able to unveil all the sorcery of the land and the sea.
_ student project . Stavros Skamakis
Materials The main path that leads into the sea was designed by wooden deck, with a small elevation of 2 steps (30cm) to allow natural growth underneath it. While the paths were designed by soil stabilizer (StabilizerÂŽ Water Binding Technology) and gravel as sustainable solutions Water was a basic element and it was used especially near the new public buildings. Irrespective of the bioclimatic benefits for the landscape, it also could create interesting paths and sceneries where walkers could enrich their senses with optical and acoustic influences.

The architectural proposal does not treat the intervention area as a usual site but as a space already “inhabited, where nothing should disturb its equilibrium. In order to maintan this condition, vegetation on site is being preserved. Trees now undertake the role of supporting the construction that hosts the observatory - hotel, as treehouses do. This concept is a Rovaniemi landmark where guests could have a clear view of the phenomenon Aurora Borealis. Combined with the fact that the observatory should be placed in a prominent position led us to the recreation of a route that can be likened to an ascent to the sky. This ascent includes an initial draught in the ground (planetarium in also featured) and then a ramp that leads to a restaurant and finally to the observatory. As far as rooms are concerned, they are placed far from the entrance, in an endeavour to ensure privacy and infuse an authentic feeling of what life in nature really looks like. A second route provides access to these rooms through the entrance as well as through the observatory. View from left to right: rooms, restaurant and observatory down centre: planetarium, main access
