STEWARDSHIP “AMBASSADORS” PLANNING A VISIT SSTC, in partnership with the Saskatchewan Waste Reduction Council and Saskatchewan’s other environmental stewardship groups, is sponsoring a “Summer Ambassador” program across Saskatchewan. The program provides summer work for four university students, who will be tasked with visiting communities around the province to talk to program participants and gather feedback, as well as leaving new information for retailers and collectors. The Ambassadors will be asking to speak with managers or the person who is most familiar with the environmental efforts in the organization. Their visits will be short and informal, and the information they gather will help all of the stewardship groups provide better service to their members and customers.

2008 a Great Year for SSTC ANNUAL P UBL I C ME E T IN G AND RE P O RT The 2009 Annual Public Meeting of the Saskatchewan Scrap Tire Corporation (SSTC) was held on April 8, 2009 in Regina. Agenda items included presentation of the 2008 Financial Statement of SSTC, a board meeting, remarks from Environment Minister Nancy Heppner and a farewell presentation to outgoing Chair of the Board Don Schlosser. The financial summary and highlights from 2008 are presented in the Annual Report attached to this issue of Treads. To obtain additional copies of the Annual Report or the full financial statements of SSTC, please call the Scrap Tire office at (306) 721-8473. 2008 was a great year for SSTC. 42 million pounds of material were recycled in 2008, bringing the total to 13 million tires recycled since the corporation began in 1996. Collectors took in 784,282 tires in 2008. Highlights of 2008 include the nine Community Demonstration Grants supported by SSTC. The grants are given out to

communities who apply to use scrap tire products in improving their local road, playground or other available areas. Grants in 2008 supported playground surfaces and equipment, garden mulch and crumb rubber used in public parks, and paving stones used in a community patio in Vanguard. SSTC was also proud to continue its support of using rubberized asphalt to pave Saskatchewan roads. 265,000 tires were used in 2008 to put rubberized asphalt throughout the province, from areas near Saskatoon and Meacham to Maple Creek. The Ministry of Highways is planning to use rubberized asphalt again in the 2009 paving season. SSTC cleaned 28 landfills of scrap tires in 2008, and by the end of 2009, all registered landfills in Saskatchewan will be cleaned of their scrap tires. With new bylaws in place to ensure scrap tires will now be properly collected and processed, there will be over 300 cleaner, greener landfills across the province.

Schlosser was instrumental from the beginning of the Corporation in 1996, when it just started out. He personally traveled the province, recruiting retailers to the program and explaining how it would change the future of recycling in the province. Collector Consultations to Begin Summer 2009

While generally the program runs smoothly, we have been hearing some complaints related to collection service. Remember: • All collectors are contracted by SSTC to pick up your scrap tires;
• All companies are Saskatchewanowned and operated and support local processors; • Collectors can only pick up tires if retailers are in good standing with the program Scrap Tire staff will spend time in the coming months talking to collectors, finding out how to improve service, discuss any issues that may arise from individual collectors, and consulting collectors as a group to hear any complaints, find resolutions, and plan for the
program going forward. The other important half of the program is retailers. This collection service is for you, and we need to hear from you on the collection service we provide. You are always encouraged to provide any feedback on issues you may experience, or positive experiences you would like to share. The SSTC can't fix what it doesn't know about. The door is always open to contact Theresa McQuoid, Executive Director, with any concerns you may have.
Schlosser’s departure marks the start of the term for a new Chair of the Board, Susan Buckle. Susan has served the Scrap Tire board since 2004, and is now the new Chair. Susan is also the Executive Director of the Saskatchewan Auto Dealers’ Association.

In addition to her duties at SADA and chairing the Board of SSTC, Susan also serves as an industry advisor on the Board of the Motor Safety Association (formerly C6 Safety). In her capacity as Executive Director of SADA, Susan also served on the 2006 Committee of Review for the Workers' Compensation Board (WCB). Susan has a firm understanding of her members' needs as well as the retail automotive industry in Saskatchewan. She is the spokesperson for SADA on all media matters, as well as the main point of contact for the membership. Susan brings with her over 20 years of management experience in the non-profit sector with membership-based organizations. She is also extensively involved in the community, as a Minister-appointed member of the Ministry of Social Services Local Appeal
Committee and a member of the WCB Experience Rating Review Committee. The Saskatchewan Automobile Dealers Association is a not-for-profit membership organization whose members are the new car and truck franchises in the province of Saskatchewan. Their mandate is to provide a medium through which their members may advance their views on subjects of common interest and advance the interests of the motoring public; as well as to foster, promote, and encourage by all lawful and proper means, those common interests. SADA provides member services such as a Dealer Code of Ethics, industry events, support for careers and training in the automotive industry, and representing all members in public relations and media relations.

2009 Awareness Campaign Update As part of its ongoing efforts to educate and maintain public and stakeholder awareness of SSTC and its programs, SSTC
is continuing with its advertising campaign in various media. Listen for new radio
commercials coming later this year. New billboards and transit advertising in Regina and Saskatoon are up already,
with messages that support the radio campaign. Throughout May there will also be radio ads in support of the
pilot bicycle tire recycling program (see story on the back page).
