ROD DESIGN PHILOSOPHY

Driven by our relentless commitment to provide every angler the upper hand, our rod design process starts with understanding the angling equation we are trying to solve, which translates to a rod’s desired flex, feel, and functionality. We obsess over the minutia of rod action with a conviction to designing the most efficient casting and fishing tapers possible. While refined flex patterns are the soul of our rods, technology is the engine that provides performance. Our desire to improve the angler experience pushes us to develop next-level blank materials, design lay-ups, and components. These advancements, working in union with carefully conceived actions, ultimately deliver peak performance, effectiveness, and durability. Finally, thirty-two sets of skilled hands craft every St. Croix rod in the most advanced manufacturing facilities in the fishing world. We fixate on constant process improvement with an ever-present eye on efficiency, sustainability, and company culture. After all, an ethos is only as strong as the people who preach it.

UNDERSTANDING ROD ACTION

Rod action can best be described as how and where the rod flexes. These variables ultimately define the performance attributes and capabilities of the rod. For example, a rod that is designed for a wide range of fishing applications and conditions needs to exude maximum lifting capacity, high line speed, and dependable loop stability. Additionally, if it is a freshwater rod it must mend well at distance. A fast-action rod features a stiff butt and mid-section with a slightly softer tip and is ideal for these tasks. Where the tip softens along the blank affects power and accuracy. A freshwater fast action will typically soften slightly lower on the blank compared to a fast/salt action. This helps the angler generate tight loops off the tip of the rod, ideal for making precision casts. In contrast, a fast/salt action will have a relatively stiffer tip which promotes power, a necessary attribute for both casting and fishing in the saltwater environment.

On the flip side of the action equation, a rod built specifically for technical dry fly fishing must lay down delicate casts, protect gossamer tippets, and possess the ability to hold a big fish on a small fly. Consequently, the rod must possess a softer butt and mid-section, allowing it to flex throughout the blank. For these reasons, a medium-fast or moderate action is the ideal choice when finesse is critical for success.

The last consideration regarding rod action is the angler’s preferred casting stroke. Casters with a short, aggressive stroke will get maximum performance from a faster action. Conversely, casters with a long, smooth stroke will appreciate the reserve power of a medium-fast or moderate action. The most proficient anglers understand how to modify their casting stroke, allowing them to utilize the best tool in any given situation.

ADVANCED CARBON FIBER

Our R&D engineers have decades of experience designing fly rods with our vast family of carbon fiber materials. In fact, we collaborate closely with our vendors to create proprietary materials designed and manufactured to our exact specifications. That level of control coupled with 75 years of rod-building knowledge allows us to create dynamic fishing tools that utilize a complex blend of carbon fiber in each rod, which allows us to precision craft the perfect flex, feel, and functionality for the tool’s intended purpose.

TECHNOLOGY

Our relentless passion for improving the angler’s experience drives a continuous search for new technologies and manufacturing processes that will improve fly rod performance. Every new advancement – from new prepreg carbon to advanced resin systems – is put through scrupulous tests in our state-of-the-art engineering lab and in the field before it makes the roster.

MITO® Graphene unlocks the power of hybrid polymer materials with specialty additives that dramatically improve overall rod performance. Functionalized graphene enhances blank strength by 20%, which improves the strength-to-weight ratio and reduces swing weight. Additionally, it optimizes tip recovery, helping the caster generate stable loops and high line speeds. Finally, functionalized graphene boosts torsional rigidity, which greatly improves accuracy, giving the angler ultimate control.

Integrated Poly Curve (IPC) tooling technology eliminates all transition points in the rod blank, resulting in one continuous taper that delivers smoother actions with better feel, increased strength, and more efficient rod recovery.

Taper Enhancement Technology (TET) incorporates precision-cut, curved blank patterns from state-of-the-art computer pattern-cutting machines. Curved TET patterns fit and lay up more precisely on IPC mandrels, resulting in stronger and more consistent actions with improved feel.

Advanced Reinforcing Technology (ART) is an exotic carbon fiber material that adds a magnitude of 10X strength with virtually no increase in blank diameter or weight. ART reduces “ovaling” and the potential for rod failure under severe loads that occurs when casting heavy sinking lines or when lifting substantial fish boatside.

Fortified Resin System (FRS) technology combines a fortified super resin with computer-operated curing ovens delivering precise temperature and time management throughout all stages of blank curing. FRS prevents micro-buckling, keeping carbon fibers in proper alignment and resulting in blanks tested to be 33% stronger than those built with standard resins and curing methods.

Slim Profile Ferrule design uses a “flag” of ART material on the ferrule area of the rod, which reduces blank ovalization and increases the strength by a magnitude of 10X with almost no additional weight.

EXCLUSIVE MITO® GRAPHENE TECHNOLOGY

At St. Croix, we’re continually seeking out and testing new materials and technologies that will boost angler performance. MITO functionalized graphene is the latest innovation supporting our persistent pursuit of fly rod perfection.

Graphene is a single-atom-thick honeycomb layer of carbon, harder than diamond, yet more elastic than rubber. In fact, it’s the strongest and stiffest material known to man. We’ve had an eye on graphene for a while, but until recently, available graphene products applicable to rod building failed to deliver the consistency and control we demand.

Through an exclusive relationship with MITO Material Solutions, St. Croix is the only rod manufacturer leveraging MITO technology and applying the first and only verified functionalized graphene product to its rodbuilding materials in-house. “Functionalized” means that MITO’s graphene product fits within our existing manufacturing processes, and that we’re in full control of the material’s application.

MITO functionalized graphene is fiberagnostic, meaning it’s compatible with any carbon or composite material we want to use – a critical consideration, as most of our rodblank designs contain multiple materials. MITO’s formula also ensures graphene concentrations in the functionalized product are homogenous – much more evenly dispersed than in commercially available graphene nano resins. This means we’re able to apply a total weight loading of actual graphene material at accuracies within .01%.

For the benefit of anglers, MITO graphene technology allows St. Croix to make certain sections of a fly rod blank stiffer and stronger while using less material, helping fine-tune flex characteristics while improving any rod’s overall strength-to-weight ratio. It also allows us to make fly rods with dramatically improved dampening for quicker recovery, translating to higher line speeds and greater loop stability. Finally, MITO graphene increases torsional rigidity, attenuating blank twist to keep the rod moving and flexing within a single plane for increased accuracy.

CONNECT

DRIVEN BY THE JOURNEY

As anglers, we often seek intrinsic connections. They are what draw us to beautiful places in search of meaningful experiences. We have a fundamental relationship with the woods and the water. Then there are those deeper bonds with the people we spend time with outside-those that bring laughter in the moment and meaning to our memories. And, of course, there is the remarkable link that can only happen between a good fish and a bent rod. All these connections remind us that while the fish are at the finish line, the journey there fuels our fascination.

Driven by this journey, the Connect Series offers sticks for any angling adventure – from trout and bass to light saltwater applications. Connect’s medium-fast actions, working in concert with the strength and responsiveness of our legendary SCIII & SCII carbon fiber materials, are engineered for versatility to give you the upper hand in the widest possible range of conditions and techniques.

SPEY + SWITCH

Like you, we get why “the grab” is so addictive. In a weird way, that magic moment when connecting with an anadromous animal – which ostensibly has no reason to move to the fly – completely validates our obsession and confirms that all the effort and patient execution was worth it. Even if the fish just plucks the fly at the end of the swing, it’s enough to keep our tank full, and the grind moving full speed ahead. That motivation alone drives us to design and precision-craft our two-handed rods to work as hard as you do.

VERSATILE TWO-HANDED PERFORMANCE

Perfectly suited for smaller steelhead and salmon rivers, the Imperial USA Switch series delivers versatile twohanded performance. Commanding fast-actions, powered by SCIV & SCII carbon fiber, it provides plenty of power for lifting and casting heavy sink-tips and large flies on skagit heads while still possessing enough feel and finesse for scandi style dry line fishing.
