SIXTH SUNDAY AFTER THE EPIPHANY

10:30AM HOLY EUCHARIST, SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 17 TH 2019

The Sunday Celebration

We are a growing Christian community celebrating and enacting the love of God through prayer and service in this neighbourhood. In our celebration today, we will try to be joyful and reflective, playful and reverent, as our thanksgiving for the new life which God gives us through Jesus Christ in the power of the Holy Spirit. Here is the shape of our service this morning: We gather together as a community of faith. We read the Word of God given to us in the Bible. We respond to the readings through silence, song and preaching. We break the bread and share the cup of wine. We take God’s love out into our lives and the world. Children are full members of our church and we welcome their presence and participation in our worship. If at any point you are unable to stand please feel free to be seated.

Prelude: I heard the voice of Jesus say

Processional Hymn# 529 God, My Hope on You Is Founded AS YOU ARE ABLE PLEASE STAND.

God, my hope on you is founded; you my faith and trust renew: Through all change and chance you guide me, only good and only true. God unknown, you alone call my heart to be your own.

Human pride and earthly glory, sword and crown, betray our trust; Though with care and toil we build them, tower and temple fall to dust. But your power, hour by hour, is my temple and my tower.

Daily does the almighty Giver bounteous gifts on us bestow; God's desire for us delights us, pleasure leads us where we go. Here at hand, love takes stand, joy awaits God's sure command.

God's great goodness lasts forever, deepest wisdom, passing thought: Splendour, light, and life attending, beauty springing out of naught. Evermore from God's store new-born worlds rise and adore.

Still from earth to God eternal sacrifice of praise be done, High above all praises praising for the gift of Christ the Son. Christ, you call one and all; those who follow shall not fall.

The Gathering of the Community

The Apostolic Greeting Presider: The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all. People: And also with you.

Collect for Purity Presider: Almighty God, People: to you all hearts are open, all desires known, and from you no secrets are hidden. Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy name; through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Prayer of the Day

The Proclamation of the Word PLEASE BE SEATED

First Reading: Jeremiah 17.5-10 Reader: A reading from the book of Jeremiah Thus says the Lord: Cursed are those who trust in mere mortals and make mere flesh their strength, whose hearts turn away from the Lord. They shall be like a shrub in the desert, and shall not see when relief comes. They shall live in the parched places of the wilderness, in an uninhabited salt land. Blessed are those who trust in the Lord, whose trust is the Lord. They shall be like a tree planted by water, sending out its roots by the stream. It shall not fear when heat comes, and its leaves shall stay green; in the year of drought it is not anxious, and it does not cease to bear fruit. The heart is devious above all else; it is perverse – who can understand it? I the Lord test the mind and search the heart, to give to all according to their ways, according to the fruit of their doings. Reader: The word of the Lord. People: Thanks be to God.

Psalm 50:1-6 (please remain seated)

Choir: The Lord, the God of gods has spoken, He has called the earth from the rising of the sun. Out of Zion, perfect in his beauty God reveals himself in glory. People: There is one Lord… Choir: Our God will come and will not keep silence; before him is a consuming fire. He calls the heav’ns and the earth from above, to witness the judgement of his people.

People: There is one Lord …

Choir: Gather before me my loyal followers, those who have made a covenant with me, Let the heavens declare his cause, for God himself, himself is the judge. People: There is one Lord …

Second Reading: 1 Corinthians 15.12-20 Reader: A reading from the first letter of Paul to the Corinthians Now if Christ is proclaimed as raised from the dead, how can some of you say there is no resurrection of the dead? If there is no resurrection of the dead, then Christ has not been raised; and if Christ has not been raised, then our proclamation has been in vain and your faith has been in vain. We are even found to be misrepresenting God, because we testified of God that he raised Christ – whom he did not raise if it is true that the dead are not raised. For if the dead are not raised, then Christ has not been raised. If Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile and you are still in your sins. Then those also who have died in Christ have perished. If for this life only we have hoped in Christ, we are of all people most to be pitied. But in fact Christ has been raised from the dead, the first fruits of those who have died. Reader: The word of the Lord. People: Thanks be to God.

Music: Traditional South

The Holy Gospel: Luke 6.17-26 Presider: The Lord be with you. All: And also with you. Presider: The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke All: Verse 2 sung: Glory to you Lord Jesus Christ! (x2) Alleluia (x4) Jesus came down with them and stood on a level place, with a great crowd of his disciples and a great multitude of people from all Judea, Jerusalem, and the coast of Tyre and Sidon. They had come to hear him and to be healed of their diseases; and those who were troubled with unclean spirits were cured. And all in the crowd were trying to touch him, for power came out from him and healed all of them. Then he looked up at his disciples and said: “Blessed are you who are poor, for yours is the kingdom of God. Blessed are you who are hungry now, for you will be filled. Blessed are you who weep now, for you will laugh. Blessed are you when people hate you, and when they exclude you, revile you, and defame you on account of the Son of Man. Rejoice in that day and leap for joy, for surely your reward is great in heaven; for that is what their ancestors did to the prophets. But woe to you who are rich, for you have received your consolation. Woe to you who are full now, for you will be hungry. Woe to you who are laughing now, for you will mourn and weep. Woe to you when all speak well of you, for that is what their ancestors did to the false prophets.” Presider: The Gospel of Christ. People: Verse 3 sung: Praise be to you Lord Jesus Christ! (x2) Alleluia (x4)

Homily: The Reverend Canon Dr. Andrew Sheldon

The Apostle’s Creed: (Please stand) Presider: Let us confess the faith of our baptism, as we say, All: I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen

The Prayers of the People: (Please stand or kneel as you prefer) Please respond to the petitions by singing “Lord hear our prayer”.

The Confession & Absolution: (Please stand or kneel as you prefer)

People: Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you will our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbours as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us, that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your name. Amen.

Presider:Almighty God have mercy upon you, pardon and deliver you from your sins, confirm and strengthen you in all goodness, and keep you in eternal life, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Offertory Hymn: # 528 O God, Our Help in Ages Past O God, our help in ages past, our hope for years to come, Our shelter from the stormy blast, and our eternal home:

Under the shadow of thy throne thy saints have dwelt secure; Sufficient is thine arm alone, and our defence is sure.

Before the hills in order stood, or earth received its frame, From everlasting thou art God, to endless years the same.

A thousand ages in thy sight are like an evening gone, Short as the watch that ends the night before the rising sun.

Time like an ever-rolling stream bears all our years away; They fly forgotten, as a dream dies at the opening day.

O God, our help in ages past, our hope for years to come, Be thou our guard while troubles last, and our eternal home.

Prayer Over the GiftsEucharistic Prayer (please remain standing)

Presider:Blessed are you, gracious God, …. (the presider will sing one of the proper prefaces)

… we raise our voices to proclaim the glory of your name. (We then sing verses 1-3 of the Sanctus following…)

Presider: We give thanks to you, Lord our God, for the goodness and love you have made known to us in creation; in calling Israel to be your people; in your Word spoken through the prophets; and above all in the Word made flesh, Jesus your Son. For in these last days you sent him to be incarnate from the Virgin Mary, to be the Saviour and Redeemer of the world. In him, you have delivered us from evil, and made us worthy to stand before you. In him, you have brought us out of error into truth, out of sin into righteousness, out of death into life. On the night he was handed over to suffering and death, a death he freely accepted, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his friends and said, “Take, eat: this is my body which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.” After supper he took the cup of wine, and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them and said, “Drink this, all of you: this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for all for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me.”

(After the words over the cup and the elevation of the chalice we sing the following…)

People: (sing) (Verse 4) Glory be to you O Lord! Glory now and evermore! Hosanna in the highest!

Presider: Therefore, Father, according to his command.

People: we remember his death, we proclaim his resurrection, we await his coming in glory;

Presider: and we offer our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving to you, Lord of all; presenting to you, from your creation, this bread and this wine. We pray you, gracious God, to send your Holy Spirit upon these gifts, that they may be the sacrament of the body of Christ and his blood of the new covenant. Unite us to your Son in his sacrifice, that we, made acceptable in him, may be sanctified + by the Holy Spirit. In the fullness of time, reconcile all things in Christ, and make them new, and bring us to that city of light where you dwell with all your sons and daughters; through Jesus Christ our Lord, the firstborn of all creation, the head of the Church, and the author of our salvation; by whom, and with whom, and in whom, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all honour and glory are yours, almighty Father, now and for ever. People: (sing) (Verse 5) Glory be to you O Lord! Glory now and evermore!

To you for evermore. Amen

The Lord’s Prayer BAS Page 211 Presider: And now, as our Saviour Christ has taught us, we are bold to pray, All: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen

The Breaking of the Bread Presider: “I am the bread of life” says the Lord. “Whoever comes to me will never be hungry; whoever believes in me will never thirst”

People: Taste and see that the Lord is good; happy are those who trust in him!

Song for the Breaking of Bread: Lamb of God

Presider: The gifts of God for the people of God. People: Thanks be to God.

The Communion All who are baptized are welcome to receive the sacrament of communion in the Anglican Church; those who are not yet baptized are encouraged to come forward to the altar for a blessing – simply fold your arms across your chest as an indication of your desire for a blessing. This invitation is extended to all – children and infants included.

Music During Communion: Hymn: This Is My Father’s World This is my Father's world, and to my listening ears All nature sings, and round me rings the music of the spheres. This is my Father's world: I rest me in the thought Of rocks and trees, of skies and seas--His hand the wonders wrought.

This is my Father's world: The birds their carols raise, The morning light, the lily white, declare their Maker's praise. This is my Father's world: He shines in all that's fair; In the rustling grass I hear Him pass, He speaks to me everywhere.

This is my Father's world: O let me ne'er forget That though the wrong seems oft so strong, God is the Ruler yet. This is my Father's world: Why should my heart be sad? The Lord is King: let the heavens ring! God reigns; let earth be glad!

Anthem: Panis AngelicusC. Franck

Prayer After Communion

PLEASE STAND AS YOU ARE ABLE

Doxology Presider: Glory to God, All: whose power, working in us, can do infinitely more than we can ask or imagine. Glory to God from generation to generation, in the church and in Christ Jesus, for ever and ever. Amen.

The BlessingI RememberRecessional Hymn # 565 Guide Me, O Thou Great Jehovah

Guide me, O thou great Jehovah, pilgrim through this barren land. I am weak, but thou art mighty; hold me with thy powerful hand. Bread of heaven, bread of heaven, feed me till I want no more, feed me till I want no more.

Open now the crystal fountain whence the healing stream doth flow; let the fire and cloudy pillar lead me all my journey through. Strong deliverer, strong deliverer, be thou still my strength and shield, be thou still my strength and shield.

When I tread the verge of Jordan, bid my anxious fears subside; death of death, and hell's destruction, land me safe on Canaan's side: songs of praises, songs of praises, I will ever give to thee, I will ever give to thee.

Dismissal Presider: Go in peace to love and serve the Lord.

People: Thanks be to God.
