2024 Board of Trade Annual Report

MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR & CEO

What a year it has been.

As we wrap up an incredible year, it’s evident that our business community thrives when we come together. Every conversation, every challenge, and every success has shown how collaborative, bold, and forward-thinking our members are.

This year, we didn’t just talk about change – we made it happen. From finally launching rideshare to pushing for policies that truly support businesses, to hosting events that brought our community together in a big way, 2024 was a year of collaboration in action, momentum, and plenty of shared successes.

One of our biggest milestones? Merging with the Newfoundland and Labrador Employers’ Council. By bringing together two strong voices, we’ve created an even bigger platform to champion businesses across the province. It’s a game-changer for advocacy, and we’re just getting started.

But beyond the wins and milestones, what stands out most is the people. Business is about more than transactions – it’s about relationships and coming together. Whether we were celebrating at the Business Awards, sharing ideas at our CEO Roundtables, or simply connecting at events, one thing was clear: we are in this together.

To our members—thank you. You are at the heart of everything we do. Your passion and innovation continue to inspire us. To our incredible board of directors and team – you are true rockstars and your dedication and drive makes all of this possible.

So, as we close out this year, we do so with deep gratitude and even bigger ambitions for the future. The momentum we’ve built is just the beginning. Let’s keep pushing forward, embracing new opportunities, and most importantly – enjoying the journey together.

Here’s to another amazing year ahead!

VISION

Establish Newfoundland and Labrador as the most sought-after place to do business.

MISSION

Helping business succeed.

VALUES

Our Brand Values reflect how we believe we should act and the principles we uphold; they are our collective moral compass. Values influence attitudes and behaviour and acting in conflict with our values can be detrimental.

Leadership

We are leaders because our members have placed their trust in us. Our leadership defines our reason for existing and is central to every choice we make. More than just a series of actions, it is a mindset. We embrace our role as a convenor of business and strive to inspire through innovation and advocacy. We are disciplined, consultative and, when necessary, outspoken.

Community

Everything we do is in service to our communities. Our membership is our primary focus, but community in all senses—our city, our friends and family, our province—are in our consideration set when developing programs. Local-first is not an afterthought, it’s a guiding principle. Also, ensuring that all diverse viewpoints in our communities are heard and respected is essential to being true leaders.

Prosperity

We are growth-focused for our members’ businesses, for the business community, for the city and for the province. A successful and prosperous business environment increases confidence for all our citizens and attracts investment in the region. We act to increase prosperity because the benefits to everyone are valuable and widespread.

Adaptability

We are innovative in our ideas and approach, driven to move business forward, and quick to adapt to new challenges and circumstances. We are inclusive, responding to the needs of our diverse membership. We recognize that ‘the way it’s always been done,’ is rarely the way it should be done now.

PILLARS

The very foundation of our purpose and focus–who we are and what we do–rests on three pillars: Engage, Empower, and Amplify. This report highlights how these pillars have guided every action the Board of Trade took in 2024, from advocacy efforts to events, member learning programs, networking opportunities and beyond.

Engage

The Board of Trade fosters active participation from both businesses and the people within our membership, facilitating connections and opportunities for members to contribute to legislative discussions, ultimately aiming for a stronger and more thriving business community in our province. Through events, sponsorships, and advocacy efforts, we prioritize meaningful engagement to ensure members feel heard and supported.

Empower

We work to equip our members with the tools and information necessary to enhance their businesses, achieved through interpreting complex reports, hosting expert sessions, and facilitating mentorship connections. By staying engaged with our members, we address their challenges, provide timely assistance, and deliver relevant opportunities, ultimately aiming to raise economic confidence and support success in Newfoundland and Labrador.

Amplify

We love to champion our community by inspiring our membership, promoting the business environment throughout the province, and communicating member achievements in the media and online. As advocates for our members to government, promoters of business news and success stories, and celebrators of achievements through awards, we aim to elevate the profiles of our members and strengthen the larger business community.

GOALS

During the development of our 2021-2024 Strategic Plan, 10 goals were identified with our pillars of Engage, Empower, and Amplify. Since 2021, the Board of Trade pursued each of these strategic goals as supported by key initiatives.

Engage

• Redefine and re-introduce the Board of Trade to the business community.

• Establish and/or strengthen effective and productive two-way relationships with industry and community partners throughout the province, including government, associations, postsecondary institutions, and chambers.

• Increase proactive outreach to current and prospective members, incorporating their voice and opinion into the work that we do and value we deliver.

• Create moments of connection between businesses, associations, members, government, etc. within our province.

Empower

• Create opportunities for members to share their expertise and knowledge to grow their business.

• Collect, interpret, and share information that can aid our members’ success in a timely manner.

• Set a tone of positivity and collaboration for the business community in Newfoundland and Labrador that balances reality with optimism.

• Amplify the stories and successes of members with our own unique, professional, and polished voice.

Amplify

• Increase the number of the Board of Trade members.

• Advance our position as the resource you rely on for up to date and accurate information relevant to business in Newfoundland and Labrador.

With 2025 underway, we are in the process of developing our 2025–2028 Strategic Plan, thoughtfully incorporating key aspects of the 2021–2024 plan to maintain continuity while addressing new priorities.

2024 IN REVIEW: A YEAR OF COLLABORATION

Over the past year, our 800+ members in Newfoundland and Labrador have shown what’s possible when businesses work together. They are more than just companies; they are leaders, innovators, suppliers, customers, mentors, and champions for one another. Through advocacy, networking, and support, we have helped businesses navigate challenges, seize new opportunities, and build a more collaborative, unified economy.

2024 was all about collaboration for the Board of Trade. Our merger with NLEC is now complete and our team is now bigger and better, with extra resources, more staff, and added expertise to serve employers even more effectively. As always, we brought our members together for our signature networking events like the Meet the Board Welcome Reception and Golf Classic, but we also had informative and engaging member events like Procurement Pathways: Accelerating Business Opportunities in NL, Taking Stock: Your Guide to Restaurant Inventory Management, and Working Together: Building a City of Opportunity with the City of St. John’s, to name a few.

We connected our members directly with policy makers to discuss and inform the conversations that matter most—like our annual State of the Province and Post-Budget Luncheon events and gained new insights on the critical role and competitive nature of our energy sector from Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers President & CEO Lisa Baiton.

We advocated strongly for a more connected business community—successfully launching rideshare in Newfoundland and Labrador, helping to increase flight options from St. John’s to Europe, and we ensured your voice was at the table in 2024 on issues that impact business including compounding financial pressures, potential tariffs, labour shortages, wage support and immigration cuts, among others.

By sharing knowledge and supporting one another, we created a powerful network that amplified our impact—helping the Board of Trade solve challenges, seize new opportunities, and advocate for positive change.

As we move into 2025, we’re still all about creating an environment where businesses can thrive, connect, and lead with confidence. Together, we’re building the future of Newfoundland and Labrador’s business community, and we’re excited to see what we can accomplish in the year ahead!

AGM and Meet the Board Welcome Reception

On February 27th, our members met virtually for our 2024 Annual General Meeting, where members came together to reflect on the year past, discuss important updates, and shape the direction for the year ahead.

Later that day, we hosted our 2024 Board of Directors Welcome Reception. It was a wonderful opportunity for everyone to connect, catch up with old friends, and meet our new Board of Directors. We also celebrated the appointment of our incoming Chair, Kevin Casey, who started day one of his chair duties, and it was clear that his leadership would bring fresh energy and vision to the year. The event was filled with great conversations, a lot of laughter, and a real sense of excitement for what was to come.

Taking Stock: Your Guide to Restaurant Inventory Management

The next day, we teamed up with Weston Bennett, Director of Operations for MBI Brands, to host a workshop focused on improving food and beverage businesses’ profitability through smart inventory management. The event focused on key topics like managing inventory, understanding food costs, using technology, and putting efficient processes in place. It was a fantastic session that gave attendees practical tools and insights to help take their business to the next level.

Procurement Pathways: Accelerating Business Opportunities in NL

In March, the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador launched two new procurement strategies to support local suppliers and promote sustainability. The Newfoundland and Labrador First Procurement Strategy aimed to increase access to government contracts by maintaining provincial preference discounts, raising open call thresholds, and offering training for new suppliers.

To help businesses navigate these changes, the Board of Trade hosted Procurement Pathways. The Hon. John Abbott, Minister Responsible for the Public Procurement Agency, and Chief Procurement Officer Heather Tizzard provided insights on how businesses could position themselves to secure government contracts.

Golf Classic

Sun, swings, and success! On August 15th, we hit the greens for our 2024 Golf Classic at The Wilds, and what a day it was! From themed holes to friendly competition and great networking, it was the perfect mix of fun and business. After a fantastic afternoon on the course, we wrapped up with dinner, live music, and plenty of laughs. A huge thank-you to everyone who joined us.

African Adventure with the Board of Trade

Early in September, a group of our members set off on a truly unforgettable trip to South Africa! From thrilling wildlife safaris to exploring the beauty and culture of Cape Town, every moment was filled with excitement, discovery, and incredible experiences.

Whether it was witnessing breathtaking landscapes, or soaking up the local food and history, this adventure was one for the books. A huge thank-you to everyone who joined us—your enthusiasm and love for exploration made the trip even more special!

Canada’s Energy Advantage: Luncheon with CAPP President & CEO Lisa Baiton

We were thrilled to host Lisa Baiton, President & CEO of CAPP on September 24th, for a discussion on Canada’s energy future. Lisa shared how Canada’s oil and natural gas resources can drive growth, particularly in Atlantic Canada’s offshore industry, and help build a more secure, prosperous future. It was an eye-opening discussion on how we can unlock the full potential of Canada’s energy resources to drive long-term growth and success for Newfoundland and Labrador and beyond.

State of the Province

On October 29th, we kicked off our annual State of the Province Address with The Hon. Dr. Andrew Furey, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador, who joined us to share his vision for the future and some of the province’s biggest plans for the year ahead.

Premier Furey dove into hot topics like the energy transition, recruitment and immigration, infrastructure, healthcare, and housing—issues that are crucial for businesses in our community. His insights sparked plenty of conversation and gave us all a clearer picture of the opportunities and challenges ahead for the province.

It was a fantastic opportunity for our members to come together, get informed, and network while learning about the exciting potential for the province. With so much to look forward to, it was the perfect way to set the stage for the year ahead!

A path forward means focusing on growing businesses and fueling the economy. We are always trying to help make things efficient, make things effective for business, and we hear their feedback loud and clear.

- The Honourable Andrew Furey, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador

Working Together: Building a City of Opportunity

On December 2nd, we brought together business leaders and city officials from St. John’s, including Mayor Danny Breen and Deputy City Manager Jason Sinyard (Planning, Engineering, and Regulatory Services) for an engaging and productive discussion on the future of growth and development. The conversation centered on how the city can better support businesses, simplify processes, and create a thriving business environment.

Over breakfast, attendees shared their experiences, voiced challenges, and presented ideas to help grow our local economy. It was a great opportunity to exchange insights, strengthen connections, and work together toward building a City of Opportunity.

2024 Member Socials

In August we had a blast at our Summer Social! Members came together for an afternoon of networking, laughs, and a little friendly competition on the golf simulators at Tee Box. Great connections, great vibes, and a perfect way to celebrate summer with our business community!

In December, we wrapped up the year with our annual Holiday Social at Piatto Pizzeria + Enoteca, bringing members together to celebrate the season and reflect on the year. It was a festive evening filled with great conversations, laughter, and holiday cheer.

Whether long-time members or new faces, everyone enjoyed the opportunity to connect throughout 2024.

Post-Budget Luncheon with Minister Coady

After the release of Budget 2024, we welcomed Deputy Premier and Minister of Finance, the Hon. Siobhan Coady, to our Post-Budget Luncheon on March 22nd at Bally Haly. As her first public engagement after delivering the budget in the House of Assembly, it was a great opportunity for our members to get firsthand insights into the province’s economic outlook and government priorities.

Minister Coady walked us through the key highlights, focusing on what mattered most to the business community. It was an informative and engaging afternoon, helping local businesses understand what Budget 2024 meant for them.

CEO Roundtables

Throughout the year, we hosted several CEO Roundtable events, creating a space for business leaders to come together, share insights, and tackle the big topics shaping our economy. These invite-only sessions offered a chance for open, candid conversations with public officials or decision makers—whether discussing challenges, exploring new opportunities, or simply learning from one another’s experiences.

The roundtables fostered valuable connections and fresh ideas, giving CEOs a supportive network to navigate an ever-changing business landscape.

Maximizing Your Membership

Our mission is to help business succeed. That’s why a Board of Trade membership comes with the tools and opportunities needed to Engage, Empower, and Amplify your business.

Throughout 2024, we hosted monthly Maximizing Your Membership sessions, ensuring our 800+ members could make the most of their benefits. From exclusive savings and Member-to-Member (M2M) programs, access to our signature events, and our portal and directory listing are what save you money and build invaluable connections.

BDC Small Business Week 2024

Did you know that 98% of the businesses in Newfoundland and Labrador are small businesses? That makes small businesses (1-99 employees) the heartbeat of our provincial economy and something worth celebrating!

From October 20-26, 2024, we celebrated Small Business Week, giving a big shoutout to the awesome entrepreneurs who keep our community thriving.

Starting a business takes a ton of courage, hard work, and determination, and we were pumped to share the stories of local small business owners who totally embody those qualities.

We spent the week chatting with local business owners, diving into what keeps them motivated, what drives them forward, and the lessons they’d pass along to others. Their stories were beyond inspiring, reminding us all just how amazing and resilient our small business community truly is!

Chamber of Commerce Executives of Canada (CCEC) Annual Conference & Canadian Chamber AGM

On October 7th and 8th, we attended the CCEC Annual Conference & Canadian Chamber AGM in beautiful Halifax—an amazing opportunity to connect with chamber professionals, discuss advocacy, business trends, and collaborate. As the only accredited Chamber of Commerce in Newfoundland and Labrador, we were proud to accept our re-accreditation certificate at the conference, certifying that we have again met the highest national standards of excellence in leadership, governance and operations.

A Sustainable Northern Cod Industry –A Stronger Newfoundland and Labrador

This year marked a historic moment for Newfoundland and Labrador as the commercial Northern Cod fishery reopened after more than 30 years. With the world watching, the big question was: how will this next chapter be defined?

Our December 5th event explored the future of Northern Cod—not just as a resource, but as an opportunity to focus on quality, set new standards for sustainability, and create jobs in rural communities. The discussion highlighted the fishery’s potential to drive economic growth while ensuring long-term sustainability.

It was an exciting and timely conversation about what’s next for one of our province’s most iconic industries!

•••

ADVOCACY IN 2024 • •••

Advocacy is a big part of what we do at the Board of Trade, helping us be a strong voice for our members and the local business community. Through our advocacy work, we aim to create an environment that supports economic growth and prosperity in our region. We’re all about working together with government and other partners to tackle challenges, encourage innovation, and create opportunities for sustainable development, while keeping in mind the diverse needs and concerns of our members.

Strengthening our Business Community

In 2024, the Board of Trade and the Newfoundland and Labrador Employers’ Council merged to become a stronger, more effective voice for businesses across the province. For years, both organizations worked tirelessly to advocate for policies that support business growth, reduce burdens, and make Newfoundland and Labrador an attractive place to invest and expand. By combining forces, we’re now even better positioned to deliver value and support to our members, ensuring they have the resources they need to succeed. With this merger, we are excited about the future and confident that our members will continue to receive the support, resources, and opportunities they need to thrive.

Minimum Wage Support

In 2024, and prior to our merger, we proudly partnered with the Newfoundland and Labrador Employers’ Council and the provincial government to launch the “Newfoundland and Labrador Wage Support Program.” Announced on April 19, the program provided financial assistance to small- and medium-sized businesses impacted by rising operational costs, particularly the recent minimum wage increase. Over $2 million was allocated to support approximately 600 businesses, offering one-time payments ranging from $2,500 to $5,000.

This initiative was a vital step in ensuring a resilient business environment, helping local businesses manage labour costs and continue contributing to the province’s economy.

Air Access

Air access is vital for business growth, enabling connections to global markets, attracting investment, and fostering economic development. Reliable air travel enhances tourism, streamlines supply chains, and supports talent attraction, all of which contribute to the competitiveness and prosperity of our region.

Air access remains a top priority for the Board of Trade, and we were thrilled to see significant progress in 2024. Following the success of WestJet’s direct St. John’s-London Gatwick route, the flight has been extended through 2027, and two additional direct routes to Dublin and Paris were added. With these routes operating from May to October, Newfoundland and Labrador now has direct access to Europe seven days a week.

Air transportation is crucial for business, tourism, and economic growth, and we’re proud to support efforts to enhance our province’s connectivity. We’ll continue to work with government, airport authorities, and airline partners to ensure even greater access in the future.

Ridesharing Launches in Newfoundland and Labrador

Beep beep! In 2024, after ongoing advocacy, we successfully championed the needs of our members, resulting in a positive change that will benefit businesses and the broader community for years to come. On April 25th, rideshare was officially launched and we welcomed Uber in Newfoundland and Labrador, providing residents, visitors, and businesses with a reliable, affordable additional transportation option.

Our members have been asking for additional transportation options for quite some time and we’re pleased to have been able to work collaboratively with government to bring ridesharing to our province.

City of St. John’s 2025 Municipal Budget

In response to the City of St. John’s 2025 Budget, the Board of Trade pushed for stronger collaboration with the business community. While tax rates remained unchanged, CEO AnnMarie Boudreau stressed that operating a business has never been more challenging. Members voiced concerns over rising costs and the need for open dialogue to shape balanced decisions.

Rising costs are a real concern, and we’re pushing for a more collaborative, proactive approach to help businesses thrive. We’re committed to working with the city to build a stronger, more sustainable business community together!
