Private investment in Conception Bay South, Newfoundland & Labrador has grown over the last decade as the population has grown to a level that can support a strong and diversified commercial, industrial and retail sector. Conception Bay South’s favorable climate, rural feel, and central location neighboring the city of St. John’s, as well as the offshore servicing and mining projects, have made it a prime location on the Avalon Peninsula for families.

Oh…and all meeting rooms, including the great ballroom, have an access to the outdoor patio overlooking the harbour.

Chair’s Message Mentoring Moments with Kevin King, President of KMK Capital Where do you see opportunity in NL? Opportunity lies in changing demographics and catering to the new demands of the bulk of the population. This is relevant across many sectors from health care, retail and residential real estate. Unfortunately, due to the population shift to the Avalon, most opportunities will be there. There will be others, but they will likely be fewer and riskier. The resource sector will provide opportunities for businesses. What do you see as the greatest challenges for business in NL and how can these challenges be addressed? We have a wage and production cost structure that escalated too high and too fast. Now, we have less people employed, less external business investment and less government spending, which means a slowdown, a downward market price pressure on everything, but production costs are still high. Because things heated up so fast, primarily driven by multiple government and multinational company mega projects there was not much pressure for work to be done efficiently. The pressure was to just get the work done. This spilled into the private sector because of the amount of disposable income, rate and amount of wage increases. Now we are in the opposite environment and we need to be more efficient to thrive – wage rates and productivity. If we can succeed, this will attract more private investment across all sectors. This combined with government policy making this place the best place to set-up shop from a cost

perspective, corporately and individually to attract employees, will go a long way. The government needs to be more decisive on a plan to tackle both the debt and deficit. The provincial balance sheet is a real deterrent for outside investment, which is a big problem for the province. Real measures need to be made, now, to tackle the province’s spending problem and a real action plan with dates put out and followedthrough. If investors see a clear plan to a stable provincial economic situation, even if it means short term pain, confidence will return. In the absence of this, the problem will persist. We must think long-term and not in short political cycles, which is a real problem when government spending, driven mainly by wages and benefits, is the largest challenge and a large portion of the electorate is employed by government or its boards and agencies. How would you describe your organization’s culture? We provide the utmost respect to everyone in the organization at all levels and show them they are valued. We give people responsibility and let them thrive. We believe it is important to listen to opinions and have an open door and flat structure policy. And lastly, we ensure everyone enjoys coming to work and the environment in which they work. Why are you in business in NL? Do you intend to continue to invest here? NL is where I was born and by default started here.

CHAIR

DOROTHY KEATING sustainability of NL and Canada. The current attack on businesses by the Government has to be curtailed or Canada will lose skilled entrepreneurs like never before seen in history and the resulting reduction in living standards will be significant. The politicians need to understand that Canada has a high standard of living as well as an expanding middle class because of capitalism. Until we see a well thought out long term plan, I would suggest that existing businesses look at the opportunity to invest outside NL and Canada for that matter and anyone considering starting a new business would be well advised to look at options outside NL as well to hedge their political and economic risks by diversifying to other areas of Canada and potentially the US. When and if conditions stabilize in NL, this diversification will make those businesses stronger.

We are investing elsewhere as typically there are more opportunities where there is a greater population and a stable economic environment. But, we will continue to invest in a very strategic manner here, as there are opportunities, given the changing dynamics in NL, that our existing capabilities and infrastructure can seize. However, we will and are investing less in NL on a percentage basis Remember that liquidity, or lack thereof, is and expanding to other areas of Canada and the primary reason many businesses fail so, closely monitor the cash available to the US. ride out the business cycles. of the most recognized and respected pleasure boat brokerage companies in Atlantic Canada. The company’s excellent reputation was a direct result of the hard work and integrity of owner John Roy. point of view

Opinions expressed in articles are not necessarily those as held by the St. John’s Board of Trade.

Time to Break Out of Newfoundland’s Political Leadership Prison Newfoundland and Labrador has long been blessed with numerous talented people who have been leaders in areas like politics, business, medicine, innovation, research, broadcasting, law and the arts. The list is almost exhaustive and for that we should be pleased. Today we still have many human resource riches yet we are not applying ourselves wisely enough in the political realm. We will all likely suffer as a consequence if we do not come up with a new maturity or model of political organization. Old school political partisanship and the type of governance it produces is not what our province needs now. Liberals, Progressive Conservatives, New Democrats, supporters of other parties and anyone who cares about the future of the province need to bravely collaborate to move forward or we may continue to decline. This is not an indictment against Dwight Ball, Ches Crosbie, and Gerri Rogers or anyone-else who has courageously put their hand up for provincial politics. I have no doubt these people and legions of others are legitimately trying their best. But, it seems, our political ecosystem is still one that caters to the bar room narrative. Feisty scrappy leaders looking for foes, real or imagined, to battle with for the hell of it because we the citizens are but victims who have been repeatedly screwed over! Are you tired of that? Certainly I am.

Island as well as Fogo/Change Islands. Neither community was happy that boats were being changed out from one community to the other. Neither liked the impact on their schedules. Both communities held aggressive protests stopping the ships from sailing until they got what they wanted. Politicians of different stripes weighed in about the right and wrong of the actual dispute as well as offering potential immediate term solutions. No elected official from any party dared address the real issue – how can we continue to afford to run a multi-billion ferry service to communities in decline? No political official publicly stated that we needed to discuss the reality of how long and how much public money should we continue to invest in places where fewer and fewer people live. The de facto political behavioral norm is fight, fight, fight, for what you have no matter the absurdity of the spend because if you don’t fight for a ferry to nowhere you will be cast adrift yourself. It is a learned behavior of Members of the House of

We are at a time in our history when we need to collaborate with each other at deep and real levels for the future of the province. Newfoundland and Labrador’s real problems be they economic, demographic and the futures of rural regions are not going to be solved if we continue to hold ourselves prisoner to the norms of our political culture. What is a winning formula for getting elected is not the gold standard for making a prosperous province. Let me give one sterling example from a recent stint guest hosting VOCM’s Openline program. In early November I was in the chair when the raging debate for days was about transferred ferries and subsequent service provision to Bell

Assembly of all stripes. They don’t ditch it because it benefits them. Our normative practices must change. We need our political leaders and aspirants to stop polarizing our own people to the degree that we do. Newfoundlanders and Labradoreans being pitted against fellow Newfoundland and Labradoreans in some other colored political jerseys is a historical tradition. Look where it has gotten us. We are at a time in our history when we need to collaborate with each other at

deep and real levels for the future of the province. That is not some naïve rhetorical flourish, it is a requirement. We cannot afford to isolate or ignore people and what they have to offer because they come from a different political tribe. We should also be unafraid to break away from our own political tribalism and the benefits some think it generates. We the broad public have to demand and in turn reinforce those who are brave enough to push the real conversations that must be had about our paralyzing economic malaise, our antiquated romanticism about rural regions, immigration challenges and recognize we are over governed. We must create the environment where the dialogue is grounded in reality not some bizarro world where the dominant debate of the day is my entitlement to ferry services. Please do not consider this a personal campaign manifesto. It is not. Rather it is the airing of many private conversations that we all for the good of our province need to unburden, push and stand by in public.

Making It Easy To Choose Local, Social, and Green A BDC Report released in 2013 set the tone for the next decade – consumers want to buy local, social, and healthy. All good news, because local, social and green bring economic, community, social, environmental and ethical benefits to the people who make up those communities. Guide to the Good is an online and outreach social enterprise of non-profit thegreenrock.ca ~ Live Sustainably NL, and it was built to make it easier for people to choose local, social and green for their daily lifestyle choices. It grew from a specific need, and is rooted in building relationships with the community, and the planet. The site went live in 2016, is piloting on the Northeast Avalon, and is looking forward to commercialization in 2018. Founder Kim Todd says, “Ten years ago when our three kids were young, they went to lots of birthday parties. We wanted to buy gifts at a reasonable price from local businesses that would not end up in the landfill, and I knew there were brilliant and creative entrepreneurs selling really cool things, but I didn’t know where they were, or how to access them. That was the problem I needed to solve, and the solution grew from there.” It turns out, she was wasn’t alone – 80% of respondents in a survey conducted by thegreenrock.ca ~ Live Sustainably NL said that local is a factor in their purchasing decisions, and 86.6% said they would spend more locally if they knew what was available and how to access it.

On the other side of the equation were the small local companies – business and organizations striving to make a living and striving to solve community problems – stuggling to capture market share. The Guide to the Good gives the two a place to meet. Online and through outreach, Guide to the Good promotes local companies (retail, kitchen table, manufacturing, non-profit organizations, et al), and publishes blogs that educate, celebrate and inform about great things going on in the community. It also serves as a tool for local business, social enterprises, and non-profit organizations to connect. All types of companies are coming together to build an ecosystem that help make the Northeast Avalon a strong, diverse, rich and thriving community. Along with providing an affordable platform for local companies to get contextual market presence, Guide to the Good revenues support thegreenrock.ca community programs, and a percentage

KIM TODD of sales revenue will be donated to local communities in developing countries. Currently there are approximately 70 local companies featured on the Guide to the Good, with a push on to get more companies involved in the pre-commercial phase. At commercialisation, revenue will be generated through profile fees and other promotional activities. working for you 2018 Advocacy Wish List Dear Santa, You must be getting tired of the same wish list from the St. John’s Board of Trade each year. However, we will continue to ask for the same gifts each year until the business community receives what is required to continue to grow and prosper in Newfoundland and Labrador. • Population growth: an entrepreneurship category under the Provincial Nominee Program (PNP) • A competitive and fair tax regime for all businesses • Increased partnerships between government and the private and community sectors • Fiscal accountability

Board urges Standing Senate Committee on National Finance for a Comprehensive Tax Review

In November, Chair Dorothy Keating had a chance to tell the Standing Senate Committee on National Finance the Board’s views on the federal government’s proposed tax changes.

Never in the history of the St. John’s Board of Trade have we heard such an outcry regarding taxation measures from our members as what we have heard this year. This is because the changes under consideration are broad and far-reaching with many unintended consequences. Keating urged the federal government to: • Take the current proposals off the table. • Launch a comprehensive tax review with meaningful consultations with the business community. • Establish a royal commission to undertake a comprehensive review of taxing statutes, guided by the principles of simplification and modernization.

Left to right, Senator Cools, Senator Marshal, Senator Mockler, Dorothy Keating, Bill Sterling, Senator Andreychuk, Senator Oh.

on the job Brendan Hagerty email: bhagerty@bot.nf.ca tel: 726-2961 ext. 116

In November, the St. John’s Board of Trade organized an event that focused on workplace culture, creativity and practices that enrich the people who matter most, your staff.

Whether we like it or not, our workplaces are changing at lightening speed. The values of young professionals are not necessarily the same as the older generations’, and that’s not a bad thing. It’s a good thing! Creativity is given a chance to flourish and people are taught that mistakes can lead to success.

company’s culture and how small, strategic changes can produce a workforce that leaves work each day not dreading the next. An early morning stretch, a healthy snack or a quiet room to clear the head can do a lot of good.

Creating a healthy, productive and efficient work culture starts with you. We can all create change, we just need to understand where change starts. Work and life can co-exist.

Non-traditional retention methods are now being noticed and embraced. If you want to keep young, bright and energetic talent, you must adapt to these changes. This underlying theme was evident throughout the Work Balance Life event. The good news is that many local businesses are adopting new and innovative approaches to retaining staff and keeping them motivated and happy. Our youth are demanding this, and it looks like they’re getting it. Gone are the days of working at a desk from 9-5. Productivity differs for everyone, if working from a coffee shop makes you happy and more productive then that’s fantastic. During our half day information session, five extremely talented BoT members proudly spoke about their respective

New York, Chicago… St. John’s? Wines of Bordeaux sampling event comes to St. John’s as part of an 8-city North American tour USA & Canada 2018 Tour Toronto: January 18 St. John’s: January 19 Montreal: January 20 New York: January 22 Chicago: January 23 Denver: January 24 San Francisco: January 25 Los Angeles: January 26

On January 19th, 2018, Newfoundland Labrador Liquor Corporation (NLC) hosts Wines of Bordeaux at the Sheraton Hotel, St. John’s. Guests to the one-night-only occasion will enjoy a truly intimate and educational wine tasting experience with many of the world’s most well established winemakers. Each year, members of the Union des Grands Crus de Bordeaux (UGCB) tour the globe, sharing the passion and quality of what are widely considered to be the world’s finest and most complex wines. From January 18th to 26th, UGCB will make 8 stops throughout the United States and Canada. Locations include some of North America’s largest metropolitan centres, including New York and Chicago, with St. John’s standing out as just the third Canadian city on the tour and the only Atlantic Canadian host for the event.

According to Steve Winter, President & CEO of NLC, the uniqueness of Bordeaux blends distinguishes these wines from global competitors. “The distinctiveness of these wines is that they are blends of grapes grown in the region. Instead of being singular varietals, it’s the blending of 3, 4 or 5 individual varietals to produce a wine unique to the vintage that makes Bordeaux so special. A different vintage from the same Chateau, more often than not, will have a different blend year over year. These slight changes produce wines that reflect both the terroir of the Chateau as well as the impact of the specific year.” With 47 Châteaux representing 2013 and 2014 vintages, guests will have an opportunity to taste from among 114 wines. These will be available to purchase at an on-site store staffed by NLC employees, and will be available on a limited time basis through select NLC Liquor Store locations. “Come discover your own taste and experience the best wine the area has to offer,” remarks Winter.

For additional information on Wines of Bordeaux, visit www.nlcevents.com. To learn more about UGCB and the Bordeaux wine-growing region of France, visit www.ugcb.net.

The New Age of Digital Marketing Gone are the days of extensive print media, costly billboard and radio advertising for the smaller businesses. Small businesses are recognizing the power of social media and the numerous low-cost benefits it brings. Social media is increasing brand recognition and improving brand loyalty resulting in higher brand authority, increased conversion rates and increased inbound traffic. Intelligent application of social media tools results in better search engine rankings, and richer customer experiences at an affordable price. It can result in revenue and profit gains only dreamed of by small companies even just a few years ago. Over few years, The Doctor’s House recognized and implemented a successful strategic social media plan. By taking an asset approach to content creation and reviewing customer engagement on syndicated posts through various social media platforms, we’ve been able to gauge our customer interests and build brand loyalty.

is an opportunity to authenticate your customer service standard, and relate on a person to person basis. This also sets a template for improved customer insight. It allows you to take inventory of exactly what your customers’ interests are as well as behavioural patterns. By doing this, you also create a path for higher conversion rates and more repeat business from old, present, and new customers. Search Engine Optimization (SEO) now relies on much more than blog posts, title tags, meta descriptions and distributed links pointing back to your site. It now incorporates your brand recognition through social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Pinterest, etc. How active you are on social media platforms impacts your legitimacy, credibility and trustworthiness to more

JERRY BRYNE CO-OWNER

What we have found is that it’s important to generate content that expresses the identity of your brand through human interaction. Customers already know what your business is about, but more importantly, they want to know about the people behind it. Through customer engagement on posts, images, videos or shares, an opportunity exists for your business to improve trust and repeat business through social verification. Every interaction you have with your customers

than just consumers. It significantly impacts how you are received by the hidden artificial intelligent engines which can significantly impact your business – good and bad.

For example, through Facebook Insights you can gather intelligent information on your posts traction. The number of posts per day, as well as timing of posts, will differ for each business and their target audience. What may work for some, may not necessarily work for others. At The Doctor’s House we’ve recognized that most of our previous and current customers react best to updates on the “daily life” within the organization; whether this is updates about the animals, gardens, trails, weddings, corporate events, community engagement posts, etc. They want to see more than what it is we offer, they want to see who we are and what we really represent as reiterated by our customers, not by the owners.

It’s important to understand that as humans, we value connection over anything else. We want to feel connected to a person, place or thing. By offering “insider insights,” that you wouldn’t find on our website or through other marketing channels – social media allows that connection. It builds mutually valuable relationships between the business and its customers.

About the SPCA St. John’s The SPCA St. John’s is an adoption-focused agency helping homeless cats and dogs find happy beginnings. The SPCA also works to encourage and assist with spaying and neutering across the Avalon Peninsula, helping make animal homelessness a thing of the past.

All work of the SPCA is based upon the Five Freedoms of Animal Welfare. This philosophy states that an animal’s primary welfare needs can be met if five basic freedoms are followed:

1

2

3

4

5

Freedom from hunger and thirst

Freedom from discomfort

Freedom from pain, injury or disease

Freedom to express normal behaviour

Freedom from fear and distress

The SPCA St. John’s provides very important animal welfare services to the community by offering temporary shelter to unwanted animals while seeking permanent homes, and educating and creating community awareness of animal welfare issues. The Animal Health and Protection Act recognizes the role of the SPCA in addressing animal cruelty. While the SPCA St. John’s does not have enforcement powers under the Animal Health and Protection Act, there are provisions concerning custody and care of seized animals that apply only to inspectors, a municipal authority, the Minister or the SPCA; not to any other person, group or agency. The value of these services is recognized by the public who support 97% of the SPCA St. John’s operational budget through financial and in-kind

VOLUME 32: #6

contributions. The role of the SPCA in assisting enforcement personnel by helping to arrange for transport, shelter and care of animals is significant. It is only through professional and confidential working relationships such as this that animals will be protected and removed from neglectful and abusive situations. The SPCA St. John’s is usually at or near maximum capacity. Between January 1, 2017 and November 27, 2017, the SPCA St. John’s took in 1,038 thousand animals, including: one bird; 850 cats; 168 dogs; one reptile; nine small and furry critters (e.g., hamsters); and nine rabbits. Each year, this number increases. The SPCA St. John’s works to curb pet overpopulation and homelessness. Cats can have up to three litters a year, and

dogs can have up to two. This leads to thousands of unwanted, homeless, suffering cats and dogs in our province. The SPCA St. John’s is committed to reducing this problem by offering spay and neuter assistance to those that need it. One hundred percent of the animals that are adopted out to new families by the SPCA St. John’s are spayed or neutered, in addition to being vet-checked, vaccinated, treated for fleas and worms and microchipped before going to their new homes. The SPCA’s Spay and Neuter Assistance Program (SNAP) program is geared towards pet owners on the Avalon Peninsula who are in financial difficulty or in a situation where their needs or their pet’s basic needs are compromised as a result of not being spayed/neutered.
