astonish Let the Stable Still
St. Luke’s 2022 Christmas Concerts
We live in what feels like an increasingly chaotic world with division, war, starvation, devastating storms, conflict, loss, worry, etc. We are pulled in six different directions at once, trying to balance our family time, personal time, work time, etc. Even in retirement we find our days full of activities and “not enough time.”
Of course, at Christmas we tend to be extra busy with shopping, parties, and contact with friends and family. The song of the angels that first Christmas gets harder for us to hear in our busy lives.
And yet, an incredible event brought God to earth in a newborn baby. Does the impact of that resonate within you, or might you be too busy to stop and feel astonished that God came to earth to be with us?
The people who came to that stable to see God born in a humble place must have been astonished at what they found. Mary and Joseph certainly must have been amazed at what they had been chosen to do. The shepherds must have been full of questions and wonder at hearing the angels sing.
We invite you to picture yourself at the manger. Does the manger still astonish you? We hope tonight’s concert doesn’t just bring you beautiful music and entertainment. Rather, we hope you will leave the outside world behind, join us at the manger, and be astonished at what God has done for us!

Luke’s Leaders
Luke’s Leaders is an after-school leadership development program with a justice-oriented, service-learning curriculum that is targeted to middle school students without access to other leadership development opportunities. We partner with MSDWT schools to identify students, and we partner with the YMCA and ProAct Indy to provide high quality, validated curricula and facilitation. St. Luke’s provides mentors, space, busing from school, a hot meal, and funding. At the end of the school year, many of our Luke’s Leaders will present ideas for Justice Projects to the Governor and State Legislators at the State House. We currently have nearly 50 middle-schoolers from WT schools participating, with plans to increase to 75 in 2023-24. Through this Outreach program, students develop leadership skills and a growth mindset. St. Luke’s forms connections with their families, and volunteers grow in understanding of various justice issues in our own community. Luke’s Leaders is a primary program helping St. Luke’s Outreach Ministry achieve impact in both Education and Justice pillars of focus.
Crooked Creek Food Pantry (CCFP)
CCFP is an important partner ministry of St. Luke’s Outreach Ministry, helping us achieve impact in our Food Insecurity pillar of focus. CCFP was founded seven years ago as a 501(c)(3) corporation, primarily with support from St. Luke’s and several other key partners, with the mission of fighting food insecurity in Northwest Indianapolis. CCFP has grown to become the third largest food pantry in central Indiana, distributing in excess of 280 tons of food each month. At least 20% of families in Marion County are food-insecure, and this is even higher in the area served by CCFP. Over 150 volunteers per week enable CCFP to serve about 3750 families each month. CCFP can always use donations of non-perishable food, money, and volunteers. The dramatic increase in the number of families being served by CCFP in the last year (up 65%) is making fund raising a top priority for CCFP this holiday season. Please join the fight against hunger in our community. For more information or to volunteer, visit ccfpindy.org.
Special Guests
Friday - Carmel High School Select Sound
Select Sound is Carmel High School’s elite acapella ensemble. This advanced group of 20 singers performs a wide variety of music ranging from classical and Renaissance, to vocal jazz and modern pop. Select Sound performs throughout the Carmel and Indianapolis area for many events throughout the year. This group is under the lead direction of Kathrine Kouns and they are honored to be a part of this year’s St. Luke’s Christmas Concert.
Saturday - Brownsburg High School Madrigals Singers
The BHS Madrigals Singers is a 50 member honors level choral ensemble, directed by Melissa Stainbrook and Chad Strasser. They have a rich history and tradition in creating choral music. Each year, they host a traditional Madrigal Dinner, perform as both a concert choir and show choir at various music invitationals, perform at numerous community events, and compete in the ISSMA concert and show choir competitions. The Madrigal Singers are currently state ranked in both divisions by the Indiana State School of Music Association. They are most honored to perform here this evening.

Groups
Are you looking to connect with others at St. Luke’s and grow in your faith? One of the best ways to do this is by joining a Steps Group. Steps is a six-week small group experience that will help you see your own faith story, understand how we live out our Christian faith at St. Luke’s, and find ways to grow in your faith in this church community. There are groups for all ages and stages of life, and there are online and in-person options.
After you’ve completed Steps, you can stay with your group or join a different small group. Small groups often form around life stage, but many are open to all. Groups choose their curriculum from a variety of studies and topics offered by St. Luke’s. Other ministry groups meet periodically to discuss books, serve together, and study the Bible. See a list of groups at stlukesumc.com/groups.
Classes and Book Studies
Throughout the year we offer a wide variety of classes and book studies that will help you grow in your understanding of Jesus, your own faith, biblical justice, and more. Our studies, like our church, are diverse in nature and let you explore topics like homosexuality and the Bible, world religions, gun control, leadership, relationships, grief, discipleship, and so much more. We have in-person, online, and hybrid options that will fit your schedule. Some classes and book studies are one time, while others meet for an extended time so you can choose what’s right for you. Here are a few classes and book studies coming up in the new year:
At St. Luke’s, we have ministries of care that offer support during times of physical, mental, and spiritual need. We are seeking to be a place that brings wholeness to everyone we serve. We offer Christian caregiving and support groups for: Learn
