Reflection by Rev. Leonard N. Peterson The news came to me bunched together with an assortment of insignificant emails. My priest classmate had died. What a shock it was! He had been a generally jolly person who sat across the aisle of the seminary classroom from me for eight years. Like me, he went on from our initial assignments as parish assistant priests (now curiously known as “parochial vicars”) to more specialized jobs. He as a prison chaplain and yours truly as a high school teacher. In his case, the new task did not seem such a good fit. But he made it work. So well did he ply his task that he eventually rose to become chief of prison chaplains for my home state of Pennsylvania. In that foolishness we fall into, the shock most likely came because God’s plan did not coincide with my own. Our Scriptures this weekend speak to us of three different matters. First the focus is on faith; then of waiting, and finally of vigilance. There comes a point in life when gray hair usually arrives, combined with news of the deaths of friends that forces us to be more cognizant of matters like our own death. It is a whole different outlook that was never a part of our youth. The questions then arise as to how one is to maintain a youthful outlook in faith, and how one is to be vigilant about it. It seems to me that not only is youth not a matter of birthday count but also that it is a state of mind. I have known pessimists who seem to have died at 35, and optimists who remain so well into their 80’s. Our basically joy-based faith comes from the resurrected Jesus, still very much alive, and not in any way a prisoner of time. When He told His Apostles that He would be with them until the end of time, and certainly that includes you and me here in our time, then the only choice we have is to be sure in our faith, and glad of it.

As for vigilance, that certainly implies a certain attitude toward the material things of this world that frees us from being beholden to them. From overvaluing them. From identifying our self-worth with them. Certainly our vigilance is not to adopt a maudlin attitude. If the phrase “If I live that long” appears frequently in our conversation that is a signal to me that one has lost the taste for life, much less the gusto needed to enjoy it. Each new morning is either appreciated or not. How we say the words “O God, it’s morning” gives us away. We hear Jesus say today “Do not be afraid any longer, little flock, for your Father is pleased to give you the kingdom.” What a put down of our worst enemy at times, namely fear. Fear is the antithesis of the Gospel. It should have no place in a Christian’s heart. Once upon a time a boy and his father were traveling in a car when a bee flew through the open window. The boy was so highly allergic to bee stings that he and his father knew that his life was in danger. As the boy frantically jumped around and tried to avoid the agitated bee, the father calmly reached out and grabbed the bee. When he opened his hand, the bee began to fly again terrifying the boy once more. The father then said, “Look, son,” holding up a hand with an implanted stinger, “his stinger is gone; he can’t hurt you any longer.” As a bee loses its stinger when it stings, death lost its sting when it STUNG Jesus. Amen .
