April 22, 2018 Fourth Sunday of Easter As we continue this Easter Season with the readings from the New Testament, we hear three of the many parables that Jesus uses to illustrate the Kingdom of God and how significant Jesus Christ is to forming our lives. In the First Reading from the Acts of the Apostles, we hear Peter talk about Jesus as the “stone rejected by you, the builders, which has become the cornerstone.” John tells us in the Second Reading that “we are God’s children now;..” and in the Gospel John tell us that Jesus is the “good shepherd.” Although many people rejected Jesus Christ, the analogy of Jesus being a cornerstone speaks of the necessity of a strong foundation. Without the proper foundation, the building will crumble and if we don’t have a strong foundation in both the knowledge and practice of our faith, our foundation also will crumble. Today’s Gospel uses the analogy as Jesus as a shepherd, laying down his life for his flock. Shepherds are not something we see everyday and most of us are unfamiliar of the precise role they play in the life of the sheep. The role may seem insignificant, but the reality is the shepherd will do everything possible to protect and nurture the sheep. This was a wonderful way for Jesus to talk to the people, who were familiar with shepherds, about his love for all people. He not only died for us but gives us the tools not to be led astray. Jesus tells us that the sheep hear his voice and no one can take them (sheep) out of his hands. We are the sheep and when we follow the teachings of Jesus Christ, the Shepherd, we will always be molded by the hands of Our Lord, Jesus Christ. Placing our lives in Jesus’ hands does not prevent us from violence and pain. It does assure us of protection in the midst of persecution and of eternal life. No one can take our faith away from us as long as we journey through life hand in hand with Jesus Christ.
