Reflection by Rev. Leonard N. Peterson Ask any award-winning movie actor or celebrity athlete and they are bound to admit that their success has happened only with a heavy dose of perseverance. The same holds for every doctor, lawyer and Indian chief. It is also axiomatic that they might have given up at any time along their path but they were determined to succeed. For the most part, the same holds true for most of the people we call “saints.” Our Lady and John the Baptist are among the exceptions of course, and then there is that unnamed “Good Thief” whose last “theft,” that of entrance to Paradise, happened just by asking Jesus to remember him as they both were dying on their crosses. Sometimes prayer is the easiest thing for us to do. Times of thanksgiving. Times before a big test or an important appointment. Times of fear and anxiety before serious surgery. Times of mourning for persons we have loved as they near death. At other times, prayer is the most difficult thing to do. When we are angry at the crazed, violent or heartless behavior of our fellow human beings. Or when we know we are supposed to pray for those we consider our enemies. Easy or difficult, we know we have an obligation to pray. It springs from the fact that there is a God who created us out of nothing and that we are here on earth as His creatures. It is an obligation however that derives from love rather than law. It is worth the time and effort it takes for that reason alone. I wonder sometimes if prayer seems difficult and perseverance in it next to impossible because of certain attachments we make to it that have nothing to do with it. Take kneeling as the only “correct” posture for prayer. That may spring from childhood instruction to kneel by our bed at night to “say our prayers.” That’s fine for awhile, but when we get to the age when kneeling is physically difficult, there is a problem. That old guy named “Arthur Itis” can be tough when he settles in as our permanent companion. Another falsehood often attached to prayer is that it must be done early in the morning. This one may derive from orders of monks and consecrated religious who pray communally what is called “The Liturgy of the Hours.” Its old name was “The Divine Office, with “office” meaning “task” or “duty.” This beautiful prayer obviously has set times for its observance, with at least two parts specifically meant to be prayed in the morning. Practically speaking, many ordinary men and women, especially parents, are very busy in the morning with routines involving themselves and their children getting ready for their day. Or it may simply be that they or you are not “morning people.” We must note that prayer can be offered at any time, but make it at the best time for you. And do it at the same time every day. The main thing is for all of us to be praying people. To persevere as Abraham did when he nervously bargained with Yahweh. As all the saints did throughout their lives, so conscious were they that we have no lasting city here below. The greatest form of prayer is praise. We do not ask anything for ourselves, but simply praise God for who He is, and all He has done for us. First Reading: Genesis 18:20-32 Abraham persists in his discourse with Yahweh, despite realizing his unworthiness to do so. In his bargaining for the salvation of the city, he discovers Yahweh’s justice and mercy. Second Reading: Colossians 2:12-14 Paul urges the community to hold fast to the true teaching they were given and not to rush to different ideas being proclaimed among them. By baptism we “died” with Christ but then we were raised to new life as He was. Gospel: Luke 11:1-13 Luke encourages his Gentile readers to persevere in prayer, aware that they have only limited knowledge of the Old Testament and God as Father.
