Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Sunday Scripture Reflections

Reading 1

Isaiah 58: 7-10

The unknown prophet addresses Hebrews back from exile in Babylon. In their joy over newly found freedom, they have expected too much. God’s people must seek something deeper and more genuine than just the experiences of being free. The writer goes into details of sharing, with the promise ( also directed to us ) that “then...your wound shall quickly be healed.”

Reading 2

1 Corinthians 2: 1-5

The Christian philosophy of life is defined as a sharing (First Reading), Especially of self, a sharing that hurts and can be a cross (“Jesus Christ, and Him crucified” as your example!). This is a kind of “wisdom” that many do not accept. Paul is aware that there are members in the congregation of Corinth who do not accept it either. Hence, he emphasizes that “faith might rest not on human wisdom but on the power of God”. We should pray for it constantly.

Gospel

Matthew 5: 13-16

Domingo Reflexiones de las escrituras

Lectura 1

Somos el nuevo Israel (primera lectura ) y We are the new Israel (First Reading ) and with con nuestro conocimiento de la fe (Segunda lectura) our insight of faith (Second Reading) we Christians nosotros los cristianos debemos ser "sal de la tierra." are to be the “salt of the earth.” But only by being Pero sólo por ser disueltos en los alimentos no dan el dissolved in food does salt give it its taste. sabor de sal. “You are the light of the World.” Only by dif"Vosotros sois la luz del mundo." Solamente fusing itself in the darkness does light enlighten. difundiéndose en la oscuridad la luz ilumina. Only by losing ourselves (sharing of self!) Sólo perdiéndonos (compartir de si mismo!) can we give “taste” to the life of deprived persons and podemos dar "gusto” a la vida de las personas enlighten their path when they falter. necesitadas e iluminar su camino cuando vacilan. 214-3

February 5, 2017 Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time MOTHER BONIFACE SPIRITUALITY CENTER 3501 Solly Ave Philadelphia, P.A. 19136 INVITES YOU TO:

“Hearts on Fire” - A Women’s Retreat ...With Anne Trufant

Dear Friends, Hope, like Faith, is a gift from God. The poor, the sick, the homeless, the vulnerable can’t give themselves hope. But, as a disciple of Jesus Christ, you can. The 2017 Catholic Charities Appeal is a wonderful opportunity to share your blessings with the least fortunate among us. St. Paul, the co-patron of our archdiocesan basilica, tells us that the three most precious virtues are Faith, Hope and Love. They’re deeply interconnected. We live our Faith when we show Love to those most in need. And in showing that Love, we bring them Hope. Your past generosity gives me great confidence that Christ will once again bestow His grace on our community of Faith. And that your donation to the 2017 Catholic Charities Appeal, motivated by Love, may continue to GIVE HOPE. Gratefully yours in Christ Most. Rev. Rev. Charles J. Chaput, O. F. Cap Archbishop of Philadelphia

The Gospel today reminds us that our lives and our deeds must serve as examples to others, pointing the way to the Father. Not for our own benefit do we labor, but so that others may see our good works and give glory to our Father in heaven.
