January 3, 2016 The Epiphany of The Lord THE FEAST OF EPIPHANY Epiphany is one of the oldest Christian feasts, dating back to the end of the second century. The observance had its origins in the eastern Christian Church, and included the birth of Jesus Christ, the visit of the three Magi who arrived in Bethlehem, and all of Jesus’ childhood events, up to his baptism in the Jordan by John the Baptist. Today Epiphany is celebrated on the Sunday between January 2 and January 8.

This Week We Celebrate: Monday, January 4—St. Elizabeth Ann Seton

Elizabeth Ann Seton was the charming “belle of the ball” as a young woman in New York City, linked to all the first families. At the age of 19, she fell in love and married the wealthy William Magee Seton. The two had a very happy marriage, raising five children but ten years later, William’s business and health both failed. Elizabeth was left a poor widow, alone with five children to care for.. Elizabeth was raised Episcopalian but her Epiphany is a complex feast which can be seen by the love of the Eucharist led her to convert to Catholifour main ideas/themes as follows: cism. The revelation of Christ to the three kings at Bethlehem is a symbol of His revelation to the whole of the Gentile world. The Epiphany presents to Tuesday, January 5—St. John Neumann, Bishop us the calling of not merely a chosen few, but all nations to Christianity. The Epiphany of The Lord

Sunday Scripture Reflections Reading 1 Isaiah 60:1-6 In this first reading God’s people hear words of encouragement. God is going to “shine on them” again and give them a new opportunity to keep their covenant and be faithful. If they do that, they will be filled with joy. The writer also hints of an even more joyous time when the Messiah, Jesus Christ, will come into the world and persons will come from afar “bearing gold and frankincense.” Like the Israelites, we often fail to keep our covenant with God. But God, who is always faithful, offers us another chance to fill our lives with the peace and joy of God’s love.

Reading 2 Ephesians 3:2-3a,5-6 In the second reading the people of Ephesus are told that the Good News of Jesus is meant not just for the Jews but for all people. We are called to be “co-heirs” in the promise of Jesus Christ. That means we share in his work of salvation by caring for others, by reaching out to those in need, and by being peacemakers.

A PRAYER FOR THE NEW YEAR Pope John XXIII—Pacem in Terris “May He banish from the hearts of all men and women whatever might endanger peace. May He transform them into witnesses of truth, justice and love. May He enkindle the rulers of peoples so that in addition to their solicitude for the proper welfare of their citizens, they may guarantee and defend the great gift of peace. May He enkindle the wills of all so that they may overcome the barriers that divide, cherish the bonds of mutual charity, understand others, and pardon those who have done them wrong. May all peoples of the earth become as brothers and sisters, and may the most longed-for peace blossom forth and reign always among men and women”. And to all this we say ………... Amen.

.EXCERPTS FROM THE BULL of INDICTION of the JUBILEE OF MERCY By Pope Francis “Mercy is the very foundation of the Church’s life. All of her pastoral activity should be caught up in the tenderness she makes present to believers; nothing in her preaching and in her witness to the world can be lacking in mercy. The Church’s very credibility is seen in how she shows merciful and compassionate love.

In the present day, as the Church is charged with the task of the new evangelization, the theme of mercy needs to be proposed again and again with new enthusiasm and renewed pastoral action. It is absolutely essential for the Church and for the credibility of her message that she herself live and testify to mercy. Her language and her gestures must transmit mercy, so as to touch the hearts of all people and inspire them once more to find the road that leads to the Father.” (The above paragraphs are from the opening introductory remarks of the Pope’s Indiction. Future bulletins will present the Pope’s Program for the Year of Mercy.) ==================================
