November 22 2015 Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe CHRIST THE KING SUNDAY In the year 1925, Pope Pius XI instituted the Feast of Christ the King for the universal church. At that time, many Christians (including Catholics) began to doubt Christ’s authority and existence, as well as the Church’s power to continue Christ’s authority. Pope Pius hoped the institution of the feast would have various effects. They were: 1) That nations would see that the Church has the right to freedom, and immunity from the state. 2) That leaders and nations would see that they are bound to give respect to Christ. 3) That the faithful would gain strength and courage from the celebration of the feast , as we are reminded that Christ must reign in our hearts, minds, wills, and bodies. Today, the same distrust of authority exists., although the problem has gotten worse. Individualism has been embraced to such an extreme, that for many, the only authority is the individual self and the idea of Christ as ruler is rejected. Many balk at the idea of kings and queens, believing them to be antiquated and possibly oppressive. These individuals miss the point. Christ’s kingship is one of humility and service.
THANKSGIVING DAY Thanksgiving services have been celebrated in America as far back as the 16th Century. Usually they were special days set aside to give thanks and praise to the Lord for blessings received, such as an end to a drought, a good harvest or a military victory. These early thanksgiving celebrations were special church services rather than feasts. The event that Americans commonly call the “First Thanksgiving” was celebrated by the Pilgrims in 1621 at Plymouth Plantation after their first harvest in the New World. The feast lasted three days and it was attended by 90 Native Americans. The Pilgrims held a “true thanksgiving” celebration in 1623 following a large harvest. This 1623 thanksgiving was significant because the order to recognize the event was from civil authority, and not from the church, making it likely the first civil recognition of Thanksgiving in New England.
By the second half of the 1600s, thanksgiving after the harvest, became more common and started to become annual events. Celebrations took place at different times and in different communities and in some places there were more than one thanksgiving each year. In 1789 President George Washing proclaimed the first national Thanksgiving Day. It became a federal holiday in 1863 when, after the Civil War, President Lincoln proclaimed a national day of “Thanksgiving and Praise to our beneficent Father who dwelleth in the HeavJesus knew the oppressive nature of secular kings, and in contrast to them, he connected his role as ens”. November 22, 2015 Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe Sunday Scripture Reflections Reading 1 Daniel 7:13-14
Domingo Escritura Reflexions Primera lectura Daniel 7:13-14
Once again we share the visions of the prophet Daniel. He sees "one like a son of man" coming from the heavens into the presence of God. This Messiah king receives from God the Father power and kingship over all nations. His rule is universal and it lasts forever. No one can take it away from him.
"Son of Man" later became a title of the Messiah. Jesus applied this title to himself. The Messiah was also thought of as a king. When Jesus was on trial before the high priest, he quoted the vision of Daniel to describe himself.
Reading 2 Revelation 1:5-8 We are delighted whenever someone we love is honored. In this reading from the beginning of the Book of Revelation, the inspired author has a vision of the second coming of Jesus Christ. He comes in the clouds as the "ruler of the kings of earth." He is the "First and the Last, the Beginning and the End." He is the faithful witness to God's promises and the first to rise from the dead. Now he is honored as a crucified and risen King.
On this triumphant feast day we rejoice in Christ's kingship. And we give thanks that Jesus has made of us a En esta fiesta triunfante nos regocijamos en el royal priesthood to serve our God and Father. reinado de Cristo.
Gospel John 18:33b-37 What kind of king is Jesus? In this reading from the passion story in John's Gospel, Jesus provides us with his own answer. Pontius Pilate was the Roman official who held power in Palestine. He asks Jesus if he is the king of the Jews. Pilate really wants to know whether Jesus might be part of a Jewish revolt against Roman rule. Jesus assures Pilate that his kingdom is not of this world. He is not one who rules by force. However he is a king who came into the world to "testify to the truth." All who recognize him as "the way and the truth and the life" will hear his voice (John 14:6). As the Church year comes to a close, we are grateful for the ways in which we have heard our King's voice in the liturgy this year. We consider how to live the words of Jesus more faithfully as the circle of the new liturgical year begins.
