November 29 2015 First Sunday of Advent THE SEASON OF ADVENT Advent is the liturgical season that always begins four Sundays before Christmas. The first Sunday of Advent, which also marks the beginning of the new liturgical year for the Church, could be as early as November 27 or as late as December 3rd. . The word “advent” , from the Latin, means “the coming” . When capitalized, “Advent” usually refers to “the coming of Christ into the world” or to “the liturgical period preceding Christmas”; it may also refer to the “Second Coming “ of Christ. Advent has probably been observed since the 4th century. Originally, it was a time when converts to Christianity readied themselves for baptism. During this preparation time Christians would spend 40 days in penance, prayer, and fasting to prepare for this celebration. Originally, there was little connection between Advent and Christmas.

The Advent Wreath is perhaps the most visible and common symbol of Advent and it is also one of the most popular Advent traditions for the home. Each part of the Advent wreath symbolizes our spiritual preparation for the birth of the world’s Messiah, Jesus Christ on Christmas day. The circular shape of the wreath symbolizes eternity; God who has no beginning and no end. The evergreens speak of the hope of newness or renewal of eternal life. The four candles , one for each week of Advent , symbolize the Light of God coming into our world at the birth of His Son, Jesus Christ. Usually there are three purple candles signifying repentance and waiting, and one pink or rose colored candle to symbolize joy. Sometimes a fifth candle is added, a white Candle in the center of the wreath representing Christ.

. By the 6th century, Roman Christians had tied Advent to the coming of Christ. But the coming they had in mind was not Christ’s first coming in the manager in Bethlehem, but his second coming in the clouds as the judge of the world. Many Christians still view Advent as a season to prepare for the Second Coming of Jesus.

The first candle is lit…... The first candle is called the Prophecy Candle. It reminds us of the prophets, those special persons who It was not until the Middle Ages that the Advent season was explicitly linked to Christ’s first spoke God's Word to the people during the hundreds of years before Jesus was born. The prophets told people coming at Christmas. The church today, looks what God was going to do, and they instructed the people back upon Christ’s coming in celebration while at on how to get ready. Over and over, the prophets warned the same time looking forward in eager anticipa- the people to repent their sins and to begin obeying God.

tion to the coming of Christ’s kingdom when he returns for his people.

The season of Advent is a season of hope and longing, of joyful expectation and of peaceful preparation. Many symbols and traditions are associated with Advent, such as Advent calendars, special Advent music, foods, processions and other traditions that may vary from one culture or region to the next. .

The first candle is also called the Candle of Hope. We can have hope because God is faithful and will keep the promises made to us. Our hope comes from God. As the prophet Isaiah says: “The root of Jesse will spring up, one who will arise to rule over the nations; the Gentiles will hope in him.” May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit. (Romans 15:12-13) 214-3

November 29, 2015 First Sunday of Advent Sunday Scripture Reflections Reading 1 Jeremiah 33:14-16 The voice of the prophet Jeremiah greets us as we enter the season of Advent. Called by God, Jeremiah preached a message of hope to the people. In today's reading we hear the promise that God will raise up, from the ancestors of King David, a ruler who will "do what is right and just." This message reminds us of Jesus our Savior. Advent is a season of hope. We prepare for the coming of God's kingdom and for Christmas. Don't delay. Begin today by praying that God will open your eyes to all the ways you can live as a person of hope. Reading 2 1 Thessalonians 3:12—4:2

No pierda tiempo. Empiece hoy rezando para que la voluntad de Dios abra sus ojos a todas las formas en que pueda vivir como una persona con esperanza.

Advent is a time of preparation for Jesus' final coming. Jesus, the just one, who will judge us in the Evangelio Lucas 21:25-28, 34-36 final days of human history, wants us to be able to stand up like true Christians when that time comes. La lectura del evangelio de hoy puede ser algo deprimente. Justamente al iniciar el año litúrgico, escuchamos que Jesús nos recuerda estar "atentos" y "orar". Gospel Luke 21:25-28, 34-36

Our Advent prayer is “Lord, come!” Lord, come — into our world! Lord, come — into our lives! Lord, come — and purify our longings! Lord, come — to free us from our compulsions and sins! Lord, come — into our relationships! Lord, come — into our work! Lord, come — into our sufferings! And into the darkness of our troubled world. Amen.

El Adviento es un tiempo de preparación para la segunda venida de Jesús, el justo, quien juzgará a todos al final de la historia humana, quiere que seamos capaces de estar de pie como verdaderos cristianos cuando el tiempo llegue.
