Third Sunday of Advent THE “O” ANTIPHONS
l
Thursday, December 17 of this week marks the beginning of the “O” Antiphons, the seven jewels of our liturgy, dating back to the 4th Century, one for each day until Christmas Eve. They are chanted or recited accompanying the Magnificat canticle of Evening Prayer and they appear currently, in the Gospel Acclamations of our liturgy. The antiphons beg God with mounting impatience to come and save His people. Their repeated use of the imperative “Come” embodies the longing of all for the Divine Messiah. The importance of the O Antiphons is twofold: Each one highlights a title for the Messiah and also, each one refers to the prophecy of Isaiah of the coming of the Messiah.
The third candle is lit …… The 3rd Candle (the pink one) is called The Shepherd Candle or The Candle of Joy. The angels sang a message of JOY! “… and she gave birth to her firstborn, a son. She wrapped him in cloths and placed him in a manager, because there was no room for them in the inn. And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. But the angel said to them, ‘Do not be afraid, I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is Christ the Lord. This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.’ Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying, ‘Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to men on whom his favor rests.’ When the angels had left and gone into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, ‘Let’s go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened which the Lord has told us about.” (Luke 2:7-15) GLORY TO GOD IN THE HIGHEST!
They are as follows: December 17 - O Wisdom of our God Most High, guiding creation with power and love: come to teach us the path of knowledge! December 18 - O Leader of the House of Israel, giver of the Law to Moses on Sinai: come to rescue us with your mighty power! December 19 - O Root of Jesse’s stem, sign of God’s love for all his people: come to save us without delay! December 20 - O Key of David, opening the gates of God’s eternal Kingdom: come and free the prisoners of darkness! December 21 - O Radiant Dawn, splendor of eternal light, sun of justice; come and shine on those who dwell in darkness and in the shadow of death. December 22 - O King of all nations and keystone of the Church: come and save man, whom you formed from the dust! December 23 -O Emmanuel, our King and Giver of Law: come to save us, Lord our God! ==================================== An interesting item -These antiphons were arranged with a definite purpose. If one starts with the last title in the Latin, and takes the first letter of each one (Emmanuel, Rex, Oriens, Clavis, Radix, Adonai, Sapientia ), the Latin words “ero cras” are spelled out, meaning “Tomorrow, I will come.” Therefore, the Lord Jesus, whose coming we have prepared for in Advent and whom we have addressed in these seven Messianic titles, now speaks to us, “Tomorrow, I will come,”. So the O Antiphons not only bring intensity to our Advent preparation, but bring it to a joyful conclusion. 214-3

Third Sunday of Advent
Sunday Scripture Reflections . Reading 1 Zephaniah 3:14-18a
Domingo Escritura Reflexions Primera lectura Sofonías 3:14-18a
We could really get into the spirit of this reading if we could sing it and accompany ourselves with musical instruments. Our song would celebrate a renewed relationship between God and God's people. The time of exile, or separation from God, is over. Now the people can once again feel good about themselves because they are living according to God's will. They sing out their joy, and God sings with them.
Joy is a gift of God. Sometimes we have to ask for it. Sometimes it takes an effort to set aside our worries or expectations of the future and to be happy in the present moment. Sometimes, to "get joy," we have to give joy first! . Reading 2 Philippians 4:4-7
This Third Sunday of Advent is sometimes called "Gaudete" Sunday. This is Latin for "Rejoice!" It comes from the first word of Saint Paul's letter for this Sunday. Paul reminds the Philippians that they should not merely rejoice that the Lord is near, and then go about their everyday business. They must also pray, be grateful, place their trust in God, and be unselfish in their relationships with others. Then they will experience "the peace of God." Gospel Luke 3:10-18 Imagine that you are there, listening to John the Baptist in today's gospel. You hear him advising the people who have already expressed their sorrow for their sins. They are about to be baptized as a sign of their repentance. But they realize that they must also change their lives and avoid sin in the future.
John tells them that they must look for someone greater than he. We know cambiar sus vidas y evitar el pecado en el futuro. that he was directing them to Jesus. Entonces la gente se pregunta si Juan es el We can be like John the Baptist when we help Mesías prometido de Dios. Juan les dice que deben others to find Jesus Christ in their lives. Pray today esperar por alguien superior a él. Sabemos que los esthat your joy in knowing Christ will help lead others taba dirigiendo a Jesús. to him.

Podemos ser como Juan el Bautista cuando ayudamos a otros a encontrar a Jesucristo en sus vidas. Reza hoy por tu gozo en saber que Cristo te ayudará a llevar a otros a él. 214-4

“Living Advent with Joy and Peace” Emmanuel, God-with-us, the calendar reminds me that I am moving closer to the celebration of your birth. How near you are, not simply as I approach the feast of Christmas, but at every moment of my life. May awareness of your presence help me to cast off anxiety. May your listening ear embolden me to pray with confidence. May I always know it is you, it is you, it is you, who are the source of joy in my heart, now and for all eternity. Amen, May it be so! This is what eternity will be: giving praise to God! And that will not be boring; it will be beautiful! This joy makes us free. Pope Francis
