Seventeenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Scripture Reflection: Today’s First Reading and the Gospel talk about physical nourishment. In the Second Reading, we hear Saint Paul, who was imprisoned for following Jesus Christ, write to the Ephesians urging them to “love in a manner worthy of the call (in Baptism.)” All three Readings from the Bible teach us about compassion, patience and trust in the Lord. The prophet Elisha, realizing that people were hungry, instructed his servant to share the barley loaves that were given to Elisha as a gift. His servant objected because he did not believe there was enough bread for everyone. In the end, everyone had their full and they even had leftovers. John’s Gospel also is about feeding the multitudes. There was a large gathering (5,000 men plus women and children) listening to Jesus. Realizing they were hungry, he instructed his disciples to find food for all to eat. They believed this to be an impossible task. Andrew saw a boy with five barley loaves and two fish but knew that would not be enough. Jesus said to have the people rest and he took the loaves, blessed and distributed them to the people as well as the fish. In the end, after everyone was full, they collected twelve baskets of leftover loaves and fish. HOW DID THIS HAPPEN? With Jesus anything can happen! Did the loaves and fish miraculously multiply? Did people, after hearing Jesus speak, share there food with people they did not know? The only thing we know for sure is that Jesus taught the people and then fed them. This story is a precursor to the Last Supper when Jesus took the bread blessed, broke and transformed it into his body and the wine into his blood. The story of the “loaves and fishes” is about Eucharist and the ability for all of us to be nourished by the Body of Christ and sustained by the Word of God. Jesus is always willing to feed us. We need only to ask. Saint Paul writes to the Ephesians about “bearing with one another through love.” He asks them to live humble and gentle lives and to be patient. Paul concludes by saying that we are part of “...one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all.” All three readings offer a road map of how we are to live as authentic disciples of Jesus Christ. When we place our trust in God and are patient in sharing the joy of the Gospel, we become compassionate and loving children of God. So we ask ourselves: • Do we ask the Lord to help us use the Gifts and Fruits of the Holy Spirit wisely and compassionately? • Do we view everyday as an opportunity to be Eucharist to others by living the Word of God and sharing what we have so that others may live in dignity and not hunger for anything?

The family which experiences the joy of faith communicates it naturally. That family is the salt of the earth and the light of the world; it is the leaven of society.

Please pray for the health and welfare of Pope Francis and all of those who will participate in the World Meeting of Families as well as all who live and work in the areas where he will be visiting Por favor, oren por la salud y el bienestar del papa San Francisco y todos aquellos que quieran participar en el Encuentro Mundial de las familias, así como todos los que viven y trabajan en las zonas donde se va a viajar. 214-3
