I would also like to acknowledge the level of cooperation and goodwill which exists between ourselves and Clonard College, evident in the joint purchase of this site. I am grateful to Mr Damian McKew, Principal of Clonard College for his ongoing cooperation in the interests of Catholic education. The negotiations with the State Government around the purchase of this site were complex and protracted, and Damian and I were pleased with the level of support we received from the Catholic Education Office Melbourne. I would like to thank the builders who have undertaken the refurbishment of these facilities, especially Old Collegians, Mr Adam Gleeson and his brother Chris, who is also one of our trade training staff members.
Principal’s Report Dear Parents, Students and Friends of the College, Last Wednesday was the feast of St Joseph and therefore a most appropriate day to formally open our Year 9 Westcourt Campus. The following extract is from my address on that occasion. “Most reverend Bishop Long, distinguished guests, staff, students and families, It is fitting that today’s opening takes place on the feast day of St Joseph. Joseph like Edmund responded to God’s call. The naming of this campus Westcourt, as well as campus features such as New Street, The Waterford Centre and Callan Courts, are designed to encourage Year 9 students into a deeper understanding of the life of the founder of the Christian Brothers, Edmund Rice. We know that Edmund restored the dignity of poor boys in Waterford by educating, clothing and feeding them, and that Irish Nationalism evident in culture, dance, sport and language were some of the ways he achieved that. More important than any of those things however, was his commitment to evangelizing, so they experienced what St John describes as ‘having life and having it to the full’. The purpose of Catholic education has not changed over time. The Westcourt campus has been fortunate to have already established a strong working relationship with Fr Gerard Keith and Fr Mick Fitzpatrick from the Geelong Pastoral Cluster. The curriculum planning for this campus was undertaken by a group of staff members led by Mr Ashwin Pillai. The role of negotiation with contractors and the finance of the project has rested with our Business Manager, Mr Terry Fowler, and he has done an outstanding job in establishing the facilities that our boys enjoy. Our parents, as always, were supportive of this development, as were our staff, led by Campus Head, Mr Michael Timms and Deputy Principal Years 7 – 9, Ms Claire Brown. Thank you to all those parents and supporters who attended the celebration. We were very lucky with the weather for Edmund Rice Day which commenced with Eucharist and was followed by a cross country walkathon event, lunch and some afternoon entertainment. It is appropriate that this event takes place during the church season of lent where amongst other things, Pope Francis has encouraged Catholics to open their hearts to our brother and sisters. Thank you for your support of your son’s fundraising for this day. The total amount raised was in excess of $47,400, which is an outstanding amount. It was wonderful to see so many parents enjoying the trivia night held at the College last Saturday evening. Thank you once again for your support. Paul Tobias - Principal

Give them a clean then send them into the Mission Office at SJC. They will be donated through Diversitat and other organisations to refugee and disadvantaged children in Geelong. Sibling Enrolment - Year 7 2015 If you have younger sons who will be seeking enrolment for Year 7 at St Joseph’s in 2015, you need to submit your application by Friday 23 May 2014. Parents who fail to do so, even if they have older sons at the College, cannot be guaranteed a place.

News from the Deputies EDMUND RICE DAY We would like to thank all families for their tremendous support of Edmund Rice Day. The funds contributed will make an enormous difference to the lives of many children both here and in Africa who are living on the margins. The day itself saw staff and students celebrating the life of Blessed Edmund Rice, founder of the Christian Brothers, through the Eucharist, music, sport and numerous other organised activities. Our whole school assembly on Monday 24 March celebrated the achievements of Edmund Rice Day and made special mention of individuals and homerooms who put an extra effort into their fund raising efforts. As a result, it seems likely that the target of $50,000 may still be reached. WINTER UNIFORM The beginning of Term 2 signals the move into the winter uniform. All students will be expected to wear long trousers, winter shirts, ties and blazers from the first day back in second term which will be Tuesday 22 April. Students must not wear summer shirts with winter uniform as they don’t have a top button and look very untidy with a tie. Belts should be plain black leather or vinyl. Please note that the rugby top should never be worn with the winter uniform and beanies are never acceptable. Please use the holiday period to ensure winter uniforms are up to the expected standard. EASTER HOLIDAYS Finally we would like to wish all families a safe and happy Easter break. Term 1 has been very busy particularly with the trade training centre and Westcourt Campus operating for the first time. We would like to thank students and parents for their tremendous support throughout the term and look forward to this continuing throughout the remainder of the year. Sustainability Matters
Young Catholic Leaders The last few weeks have been busy ones for our senior and junior leaders as they have represented St Joseph’s College at a number of Diocesan and Deanery events. Michael McAuliffe, Darcy Barling and Ben Cazaly attended the Conversation with the Archbishop forum which gave them a chance to hear about faith from other young people, share ideas of leadership in schools and ask questions of Archbishop Denis Hart. The Archbishop responded to these questions while also telling something of his own story. The students enjoyed meeting leaders from other schools and valued the time the Archbishop gave to them by being with them for the whole day. One of the perks of the day was having their photo taken with the Archbishop! Four enthusiastic Year 10 leaders gave up their Edmund Rice Day activities to attend the Young Speakers’ Colloquium, as part of Catholic Education Week. The students who attended, Darcy Kiss, Jared Muraca, Chad Suphamongkol and Jack O’Neill, were inspired by our own past-student, Nick Maxwell, as well as a number of other speakers discussing the theme “Dare to Dream”. Each of the three speakers indicated that nothing is beyond reach if you put your mind to it and take the initiative to make it a reality. And most recently, Gabriel Hickey and Joseph Caruana both of Year 8 represented the College at the Deanery Mass held at St Mary’s Basilica on Sunday evening. They carried our school banner proudly and confidently. Father Gerard Keith spoke of the hope for the Church which is shown through all those who represented numerous organisations and schools at the Mass. We are very proud of these students for integrity they have shown and the sacrifices they have made to attend these events. Jo Hart - Director of Identity

Parents & friends Update The P&F held our first event for the year last Saturday night with a trivia night held in the gym. There was a fantastic turnout with over 280 people in attendance. Simon, our trivia man, was great and his approach of keeping the night moving whilst providing everyone the chance of answering the reasonable questions, provided a fun and interesting night for all. The night was primarily a social function, a chance for parents to have a relaxed night out. As it was so well patronised, we were able to raise around $3000 which will go towards the P&F’s yearly commitment of $6000 to the school’s bursary fund. The P&F are proud to support this fund, along with the Old Collegians and the Foundation, which enables boys to attend St Joseph’s who may not have had the opportunity otherwise. It was great to see so many staff members attend and we’d like to thank them and everyone who attended. Many thanks to the sub-committee for organising such a fantastic night. Our next meeting will be held on Tuesday 22 April in the staffroom and we will be discussing upcoming events for the remainder of the year. If you are unable to attend our meetings but would like to be kept informed and receive the minutes each month, please let David know and they can be emailed to you. Thanks for your ongoing support. Trivia Night The Parents and Friends Trivia Night held on Saturday 22 March was a huge success. Over 280 people attended the evening which was crammed with entertaining games and trivia. Community service news As the term draws to a close I would like to take the opportunity to thank all staff and students who have helped out with various community events and programs throughout the term. St Joseph’s has a wonderful tradition of helping others and this has been most evident this term with staff and students so willing to give up their time to assist others in need. With the holidays approaching it is an excellent time for students to complete community service hours. We have a number of community service opportunities for the boys. Studying for English I am often asked about tips for getting ahead in English or ways of overcoming some of the common problems students have in English. Here are some suggestions: • Read the text your son is studying in class and talk about it with him. • Reading is important to developing vocabulary and helping students to understand the effect purpose and audience have in shaping a text. Encourage your son to read and allow him plenty of choice in what he reads. These tips come from http://www.schoolatoz.nsw. edu.au/homework-and-study/english/my-book-club/ disgusting-ways-to-get-boys-to-read • A key to getting boys to read is finding subject matter that interests them. • Often young boys are interested in “rude things” because it allows them to laugh about it without having to do it themselves. • Boys can see reading as a feminine activity because it’s often women they see reading. • Hook boys into reading something they like and they will broaden their choices in time. • Books allow the reader to visit different worlds and dimensions; something many boys love. ACCENT ON MUSIC
ACC MUSIC SPECTACULAR HAMER HALL, ARTS CENTRE, MELBOURNE 7PM, 17 SEPTEMBER 2014 Following a successful f inaugural concert in 2008, Associated Catholic Colleges is proud to announce that we will return to Hamer Hall in September this year for our second combined schools concert, “ACCent on Music”. This music spectacular will feature the individual and collective musical talents of the eleven ACC member schools, as well as the legendary genius of one of Australia’s pre-eminent musicians, Mr. James Morrison. We are delighted that James has made himself available to perform with a selection of our ensembles, and he will also act as compere on the night. He is a strong supporter of music education and we look forward to welcoming him to our event. The aim of this concert is to provide an opportunity to showcase the variety and excellence of music programs within the ACC to our school communities and to the general public. It also provides our musicians and singers a potentially once-in-a-lifetime opportunity of performing high calibre works in a world-class concert hall. A wide variety of musicians and vocalists will be involved in this performance in a number of ways: • Several combined school items - Choir, Senior Concert Band, Junior Concert Band, Advanced Stage Band and Orchestra • Individual School items – each school will have an ensemble perform on the Hamer Hall stage, as well as several ensembles performing in the various foyers leading up to the event. Rehearsals for the massed items will be delivered within the scope of the usual ACC Music Workshop program to be held throughout 2014, as well as within the normal rehearsal program of each contributing school. The Directors of Music from our member colleges have been working hard in preparation for the concert, and will be working collaboratively to ensure that the concert is a great success. We ask the support of all students and families in attending the concert, which is to be held at Hamer Hall, Arts Centre Melbourne on Wednesday, 17th September. Ticket prices, whilst still to be finalised, will not be expensive they are expected to be in the vicinity of $15 per ticket. This event promises to be a memorable experience for performers and audience members alike. WHY COMMEMORATION? August 2014 marks 100 years since the commencement of the First World War. Across the globe, the Anzac Centenary (2014 – 2018) will be marked by millions of people, in places of special importance and in ways personally meaningful to them. In Victoria, local communities will have the opportunity to plan their own commemorations and to share in the stories of those who served. Commemoration is an act of community remembrance. Every year, at an appointed time and place, the people of a community gather together to remember the sacrifice of those who served and died in war. Ceremonies, with their set order of activities and their symbols of commemoration, enable a country or a community to pass on the act and meaning of remembrance from generation to generation. IN THE BR O S ADAMS CENTRE (GYM) The College is holding a special Mass in celebration of all of our SJC Mums, Grandmothers and Special Women who are welcome to join us in celebrating Mother’s Day. The Mass will be followed by light refreshments. All Year 7 students will attend the Mass and are welcome to invite guests - please RSVP via the College website by clicking on EVENTS. Students from other Year levels are also welcome to attend and invite their own Mother’s Day guests - providing they also RSVP via the online form. This will allow the College to arrange for those students to be absent from class during the Mass. The RSVP will also allow us to properly cater for the morning tea.
