COVID-19 RESPONSE
2020-21 Academic Year: St. Anne’s-Belfield School closed in early March 2020 in response to COVID-19. With little to no disruption to the school calendar, all classes migrated to a virtual platform and met online as regularly scheduled. Students received letter grades for their work. Domestic and international students had the option to fully enroll as in-person or virtual learners for a traditional academic experience. 2021-22 Academic Year: We returned to a fully immersive academic in-person experience for all students. 2022-23 Academic Year: While we continue to offer a fully immersive academic in-person experience, opportunites for extracurricular activities were severly curtailed in the 2020-22 years. As a result extracurricular activities for the class of 2023 are more limited.

Academic Highlights ACADEMIC DISTINCTION
We are the only high school in the nation with a federal license that allows seniors enrolled in the Environmental Studies Advanced Senior Seminar to work in consultation with the Virginia Department of Game and Wildlife to study, analyze, and gather data on the federally endangered James River Spinymussel. Seniors enrolled in our Biotechnology and Ethics Advanced Senior Seminar are developing an environmental DNA ACADEMIC CULTURE Research To promote intellectual rigor, students at St. Anne’s-Belfield engage in research at some point over the course of their high school career. Each year, approximately 45% of our student body is involved in an intensive research project. All eleventhgrade students undertake a major research paper. Students in good academic standing in grades 10-12 who either exhaust the course offerings within a given department or wish to pursue a particular idea or topic in significant depth may undertake an Independent Study Research Project, or students in Grade 12 may pursue a Capstone Thesis. In addition, all students enrolled in the Environmental Studies Advanced Senior Seminar participate in an ongoing research project with the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries. AP Senior Seminars: All students enrolled in a senior seminar may elect to pursue Advanced Placement Seminar credit. Students electing to follow this pathway will complete differentiated assessments including both individual and team presentations, two major written papers, and submit a portfolio of their work. • • • • •

Teaching Assistant Program Each year, a select number of students are invited by faculty to serve as Teaching Assistants (TA’s). They are treated by faculty as collaborators and play an active role in researching, planning, and teaching one or more mini-lessons. They curate, create, and help customize support materials for the course. They also help to steer their affiliated program having previously excelled in the course content. Humanities Curriculum Our Humanities program reflects a belief that the most significant way to prepare students for the demands of an increasingly global and complex world lies in interdisciplinary study. Our Humanities program emphasizes the fundamental skills of reading, writing, analysis, interpretation, problem solving, collaboration, and
sequence, a tool that will allow our student researchers to find new populations of endangered species in our ecosystem. Working collaboratively with academic experts, faculty, and students in our Biology, Biotechnology, and Computer Science departments work in our Zebrafish research lab and use contemporary biological and computer science techniques to answer novel questions about Zebrafish, a model organism for scientific research. Research findings will help us answer questions about how environmental toxins impact aquatic animal survival. persuasive communication as students interact with foundational texts in the broadest sense, works that include literature, history, art, architecture, philosophy, human geography, and the wisdom traditions. Our curriculum encourages students to become more informed, engaged, and empathetic citizens as they develop an understanding of and sensitivity to other cultures. Integrated Mathematics Curriculum In Integrated Mathematics 1 through Integrated Mathematics 4, students learn all of the concepts traditionally taught in Algebra 1, Geometry, and Algebra 2 with an introduction to trigonometry, Advanced Algebra/Pre-Calculus with Trigonometry, data analysis, analytic geometry, and introduction to Calculus. Successful completion of the integrated mathematics curriculum allows students to enroll in courses taught at or beyond the AP level. Computer Science The computer science program demands the collaborative creation of projects that use the source material of typical undergraduate courses as a basis for academic exploration, self-expression, and interdisciplinary synthesis. Over the course of three years, students in the program create web applications, dive into artificial intelligence, algorithmic analysis, and learn Agile engineering methodology. They also master recursion, set theory, counting, and further fundamentals of discrete mathematics. Senior Seminars Each senior is required to enroll in and pass one Senior Seminar. Many seniors elect to take two seminars. Students, with faculty, and experts in the field collaborate in a yearlong experience that emphasizes the exploration of multiple perspectives, research, critical thinking, and the creation of one or more works that contribute to the betterment of the field of study and the St. Anne’s-Belfield community. The seminars in each academic discipline listed below are modeled on college-level courses. • • • • • •
