2010 VOLLEYBALLMEDIA GUIDE
2010 SEASON PREVIEW The 2010 Mercer volleyball campaign marks the conclusion of a four-year odyssey for three seniors, Libby Hansch, Krista Hurley and Erica Vrvilo. Mercer’s senior trio have collected 37 wins in Orange and Black, but this season the group aims to accomplish a goal that has proved elusive, the Atlantic Sun Championship. After a landmark 18-win season in 2008, last year’s Mercer team suffered a drop-off which was a direct result of a young, inexperienced roster. After winning just six of its first 23 matches last season, the team began to reach its potential late in the year, finishing 5-1 in its last six contests. Rooke expects the 2010 Bears to pick up where they left off last season and has high hopes for the team. One reason Rooke is confident is because she finds it easy to draw parallels between the 2008 squad and this year’s team. “From day one, I’ve noticed a strong resemblance to our 2008 team,” said Rooke. “Like in 2008, we have strong leadership from the top down and our seniors’ attitudes mirror the class of 2008.” Overall, Mercer returns nine key players from a season ago and welcomes the arrival of six newcomers. MIDDLE BLOCKER For the fourth consecutive season, Rooke returns the formidable combination of Hansch and Hurley at the middle blocker position. In their three seasons with Mercer, Hansch and Hurley have developed into arguably the league’s best one-two punch at the position.
Both Frutchey and Urbelis have shown flashes of brilliance during their careers with the Bears. Frutchey was named an All-Freshman team selection in 2008 after appearing in 100 sets and racking up 165 kills. Urbelis became an integral part of the Mercer roster last season, piling up 221 kills in just 87 sets. On Oct. 26 of

At the outside hitter position the Bears boast the triple-threat attack of juniors Amiee Frutchey, Rachel Urbelis and sophomore Jamie Duffy.

Becton arrives in Macon after a stellar four-year career as a high school player in Albuquerque, New Mexico. During her time at Del Norte High School, Becton racked up numerous accolades, including being named All-District player of the year and being featured among the American Volleyball Coaches’ Association’s “Top Players to Watch”.
BEARS
Joining the seniors at the middle blocker spot are returning junior Charlayna Braxton and incoming freshman Zoe Becton. Rooke insists Braxton has made huge strides since last fall and had a strong finish during the team’s spring season.
COACHES
Hansch and Hurley both enter the season ranked among the program’s top-five players in career attack percentage. In addition to their offensive prowess, the duo is known for disrupting the opponent’s attacking strategy as well. In each of their seasons with the Bears, the team has ranked among the league’s top-four teams in blocks per set.
PREVIEW
“Libby and Krista bring two different styles of play to the position, which adds versatility to our offense,” Rooke said. “It certainly makes us harder to scout and defend against.”

2010 SEASON PREVIEW
last season, Urbelis landed the Atlantic Sun Player of the Week selection after tallying an astounding 30 kills in the Bears’ 3-2 victory at Campbell. Competing for time at the outside hitter position this season will be freshmen Cassie Roy and Emily Rochefort. “Cassie and Emily are valuable because they will provide athleticism and a spark of energy off the bench,” said Rooke. RIGHTSIDE HITTERS Yet another position in which experience abounds is the rightside hitter position. Vrvilo and junior Anna Coursey will rotate at the spot for the third consecutive season. Between the two, Vrvilo and Coursey have combined for over 500 kills in the past two seasons. “It’ll be interesting to see who will take the reigns at the outside hitter position this season,” said Rooke. “Both Erica and Anna are hungry and absolutely capable of having an outstanding season.” Newcomer Lizzie Knapper joins the pair of upperclassmen on the rightside for the Bears in 2010. Knapper hails from Cleveland, Ohio where she helped lead her high school team to the AAAA Regional and State Championships in her senior season.

LIBERO
8
For the first time since 2008, Mercer enters the season with a clear-cut starter at the libero position. After winning the position midway through the 2009 season, Charlotte Harris returns for Rooke as the defensive leader in 2010. “Charlotte is extremely ambitious and confident in her role as our libero,” Rooke said. “The team rallies behind her at the position and 2010 should be a breakout season for her.” In 51 sets last season, Harris posted an impressive 4.61 digs per set average, ranking third among conference players in the category. SETTER As the 2010 season approaches, the role of setter remains a competition between freshmen Carly Iannarino and Bridget Sheerin. Rooke characterizes the pair as young, intelligent players who are quick learners. “Both of our setters are already showing signs that they can quarterback this offense,” Rooke said. Sheerin, who stands six-feet tall, attended Marist High School in Chicago, Ill. At Marist, Sheerin earned All-Conference honors as a senior captain of the Redhawks. Iannarino garnered All-Conference honors in her sophomore, junior and senior seasons at Southlake Christian Academy in Huntersville, N.C. Atlantic Sun schedule is a singleround of contests, a departure from the recent home-away format. Over the last two seasons, the A-Sun has used a double-round format for conference opponents, each school meeting its league opponents at home and on the road. This season, for the first time since 2007, Mercer has only one crack at each A-Sun foe. “The change in our conference schedule provides the additional opportunities for preseason tournaments and non-conference matchups,” Mercer head coach Noelle Rooke said. “In preparation for this year’s schedule, I attempted to put together a balanced schedule featur-
ing both elite teams and teams with comparable RPI’s to ours.” The season’s first contest pits Mercer against Eastern Washington at Washington’s Invitational on Aug. 27 in Seattle. The Bears are also slated to face Pac-10 powerhouse Washington, Portland State and Seattle University at the two-day event.
The final non-conference tournament comes at South Carolina State on Sept. 17-18. Mercer

Both Georgia Southern and Morehead State posted 21-win seasons in 2009 and seem poised to break into the nations’ top-100 teams this fall. NC State aims to improve upon last year’s 8-27 mark.
RECORDS
After the match with Georgia State, Mercer’s schedule includes two more non-conference tournaments before beginning conference play. On Sept. 10-11, the Bears participate in the North Carolina State Tournament with Morehead State, NC State and Georgia Southern.
REVIEW
Next up after the Bear Brawl is a mid-week test at in-state rival Georgia State on Wednesday, September 8. In 2008, Rooke guided her team to the program’s first win over Georgia State before falling to the Panthers last year. In 2010, Georgia State begins a new era under recently-hired head coach Tami Ores. Ores came from the University of Maryland, where she served as the associate head coach and recruiting coordinator for the Terrapins.
BEARS
On Sept. 3-4, Mercer hosts its annual Bear Brawl non-conference tournament. This year’s field includes Presbyterian, UT Martin and The Citadel.
COACHES
Following its trip to Seattle, Mercer returns to the southeast for a battle at Auburn on Sept. 1. The matchup with the Tigers marks the third-consecutive year Mercer has traveled to Auburn. The teams have split the last two contests.
PREVIEW
Last season, Washington rose as high as No. 3 in the AVCA Coaches Poll before falling in the second round of the NCAA tournament to Colorado State. Eastern Washington finished the season No. 116 in the national RPI rankings after compiling an 18-11 record in 2009. Seattle looks to rebound after last season’s 7-20 campaign.

also squares off with North Carolina Central and Hampton at the event.
Sandwiched in between the final non-conference tournaments is a trip to Florida A&M on Sept. 14. The road match against the Rattlers marks the first of a road-home, two-game set with the defending Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Champions. FAMU travels to Macon for a clash in the University Center on Oct. 23. Other non-conference opponents include Savannah State, UNC Asheville and UNC Wilmington. Mercer faces both Savannah State and UNC Asheville at home and on the road. Savannah State invades Macon on Sept. 18 while the Bears return the favor on Oct. 26 with a trip to Savannah. Mercer’s home match against UNC Asheville on Sept. 28 marks the final tune-up before conference play starts at Lipscomb on Oct. 2. Mercer tangles with the Bulldogs once more on Oct. 19 in Asheville.

Rooke’s 200th win came as a part of a five-match conference winning streak that was the defining moment for the 2009 squad. Facing the loss of four key seniors, the 2009 team battled its way to eleven wins, five of which came in the last six matches of the year.
12
In 2008, Rooke enjoyed her most successful season with the Bears and became the first volleyball coach in the school’s history to be named conference coach of the year. Rooke earned the honor after guiding the Bears to an 18-10 (13-7 A-Sun) regular season record. The 2008 season featured the highest win total for the program in 14 years and top league win total in program history. Under Rooke that season, Mercer was one of the top defensive teams in the nation, finishing the season ranked 16th in digs per set. Senior libero Claire Tucker, who was honored as an all-conference second-team player, finished the season 8th in the nation in digs per set (5.41). On the offensive front, senior setter Kelly Jansen finished her career as the program’s all-time leader in assists (3,196). Not only was Rooke’s squad effective on the court, they also excelled in the classroom. Nine members of the 2008 squad were named to the Atlantic Sun Honor Roll. In 2007, sophomore Jen Darty broke the school single-season record for blocks per game (1.14), and block assists (95) while her older sister, Julie Darty finished her career as the school’s all-time career leader in kills per game (3.18). In 2006, under Rooke, the Bears made their marks in the record books. Jen Darty garnered A-Sun Freshman of the Year accolades, becoming the first Bear to earn the honor since Katie Plummer in 2001. Chelsea Gebben earned a spot in the NCAA record books, serving 22 consecutive points in a match against Savannah State. Mercer also set several records in the A-Sun, including the three-game kill (68) and assists (67) records in a match against UNC Asheville. In 2006 Bears also made an impact on the school record books, breaking six records in the season and career books. In 2005, the Bears got off to a rocky start as they dropped 15 of their first 20 matches including five straight losses to open conference play. Rooke rallied her young team and challenged them to play better down the

stretch, and the Bears responded with six consecutive wins to close the regular season, including four straight in conference play. Mercer secured the No. 5 seed in the A-Sun Tourney, marking their third consecutive trip. In her first season with the Bears, Rooke’s guided her new squad to a 13-16 record and the sixth seed at the conference tournament. Rooke coached Katie Plummer as she finished her career at Mercer and became the first Bear to record over 1,000 kills and 1,000 digs in her career. Not only that, Rooke was responsible for moving Liz Kane to the libero position, which allowed her to rewrite the Mercer record books and go down as one of the best liberos in the program’s history. Taking over a program and raising the bar is nothing new for Rooke. Prior to arriving at Mercer, she served as head coach for six seasons at two different schools where she experienced considerable success. In her first head coaching position, Rooke took over at South Carolina Aiken and went 64-42 in three seasons. While at USC Aiken, she coached two players who earned academic All-America honors.

PREVIEW
Following her stint at USC Aiken, Rooke spent one season as an assistant coach at Rowan University before taking the helm of the Profs’ program. Once again, Rooke righted the ship and raised Rowan’s expectations. In three seasons at Rowan she went 65-27 and led the Profs to the NCAA Tournament for just the second time in school history. Her 2002 team finished with a 27-9 record and claimed the New Jersey Athletic Conference title for just the fifth time in school history, earning Rooke Coach of the Year honors.
ROOKE YEAR-BY-YEAR
An impressive student-athlete in her own right, Rooke was a four-year letterwinner in volleyball, soccer and track in high school, earning first-team all-conference honors in all three sports her junior and senior years. She was also named MVP and team captain of the volleyball team during her senior year.
COACHES
Following her stellar high school career, Rooke went on to star as a setter at Florida Southern. She was named team captain and MVP, as well as being named second-team all-conference her senior year.
BEARS
Rooke earned her bachelors degree in sociology from Florida Southern in 1996, where she took her first coaching job as a graduate assistant. She resides in Macon and is married to former Mercer soccer standout, Max Rooke.

THIS IS MERCE What distinguishes a good university from a great university extends far beyond the boundaries of its curriculum and its campus.
The competence and character of an institution’s graduates are, more often than not, the hallmarks by which its reputation is both earned and measured. As a private, co-educational institution, Mercer University has emerged as one of the premier universities in the Southeast and the nation. Mercer is truly a dynamic and comprehensive center of undergraduate, graduate and professional education. Mercer’s outstanding faculty take students beyond the rigors of academic programs to explore the challenges of reason, responsibility, compassion and character. Through learning, living and leading, Mercer students are prepared not only to confront, but also to embrace the challenges of their future. Under the leadership of prominent Georgia Baptist leader Jesse Mercer, Mercer University was founded in Penfield, Ga., in 1833 and later moved to Macon in 1871. From its humble beginnings as a small liberal arts college, Mercer now offers programs in 11 schools and colleges. Conveniently located in the middle of the state, Macon serves as the educational, medical, cultural and commercial hub of central Georgia. Located just one hour from Atlanta - one of
ER... the nation’s most popular international cities - and two hours from the Atlantic coast, Macon is easily accessible from two interstate highways - I-75 and I-16. Consistently ranked by U.S. News & World Report and The Princeton Review among the nation’s leading universities, Mercer considers one of its strengths to be its superior faculty, who “teach from the heart.” At Mercer, students benefit from learning experiences guided by caring faculty, not teaching assistants found at many universities as is the case at many universities. The Higher Education Research Institute at UCLA recently named Mercer as a “highly selective” university, and The Princeton Review has placed Mercer among the Best 351 Colleges in North America. The University is comprised of the College of Liberal Arts, the Walter F. George School of Law, the School of Pharmacy and Health Services, the School of Medicine, the Eugene W. Stetson School of Business and Economics, the School of Engineering, the James and Carolyn McAfee School of Theology, the Tift College of Education, the Georgia Baptist College of Nursing, the College of Continuing and Professional Studies, and the Townsend School of Music. The University also operates the Mercer University Press in Macon and the Mercer Engineering Research Center in Warner Robins. Mercer’s enrollment is nearly 8,100 students. While many students come from the Southeast, more than 38 states and 30 countries are represented among the student body. The average class size at Mercer is 21, with a student/faculty ratio of 13:1 - unusually low for a major university.
CAMPUS LIFE Even with its picturesque setting, the spirit of Mercer is not in the grandeur of its buildings, but in the graciousness of its people - a friendly, family-like community of faculty, staff and students who strive for excellence in all that they do. The University offers a wealth of fascinating experiences and activities both in and outside the classroom. From academic clubs and honor societies, to performing arts and special interest groups, to 16 national fraternities and sororities on campus, students can choose from more than 80 on-campus organizations to discover new talents and interests and to gain important leadership skills they will need for life after college.
RESIDENCE LIFE The benefits of campus living are numerous - the development l off life-long friendships, a sense of community, enhancing campus involvement and higher academic performance. For many new students, this is the first time they have lived away from home, and the community that develops on campus and in residence halls becomes a second family. All freshman and sophomores (first-year and/or transfer students) are required to live on campus, with the exception of married students, students above the age of 21, students with children and/or students who live at home with a parent or guardian within reasonable commuting distance. In each of Mercer’s residence halls, safety comes first and foremost. The exterior doors are locked at all times, and students use their identification cards to gain access into their residence hall.

MERCER UNIVERSITY PRESIDENT WILLIAM D. UNDERWOOD
Mercer during a period of dynamic growth and development for the University. Since his arrival as Mercer’s 18th President in 2006, enrollment has increased by 18 percent to more than 8,200 students. Mercer has launched a second medical school campus (in Savannah), initiated a master’slevel physician assistant program and a doctoral-level program in physical therapy and added Ph.D. programs in Educational Leadership, Curriculum and Instruction, and Nursing. Reflecting an increased emphasis on research, Mercer in 2009-10 met the criteria established by the Carnegie Foundation for reclassification as a research-doctoral university. Over the past three years, the number of Ph.D. students has increased from fewer than 25 to approximately 200, while the amount of externally funded research expenditures has grown to nearly $25 million. In addition to increased levels of funding from the National Institutes of Health and the National Science Foundation, Mercer scientists have for the first time been funded as eminent cancer scientists by the Georgia Cancer Coalition, while other Mercer scientists are now receiving funding to support their research through the Georgia Research Alliance. The University has intensified its longstanding commitment to service-learning and community engagement under President Underwood’s leadership. During the spring of 2009, Mercer announced a $5 million grant from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation to support continued revitalization of the College Hill Corridor between campus and downtown Macon. The groundbreaking Mercer On Mission pro-
gram, launched in 2007, has been recognized by the Clinton Global Initiative as “an exemplary approach to addressing a specific global challenge.” Mercer earned the highest federal recognition for community engagement by the Corporation for National and Community Service in 2009, and in 2008 became the only university in Georgia to receive the Carnegie Foundation’s designation for “Curricular Engagement and Outreach and Partnerships.” Prior to joining Mercer, President Underwood served at Baylor University as Interim President and held the prestigious Leon Jaworski Chair at the Baylor School of Law. President Underwood is an accomplished educator and scholar. He was designated a Master Teacher at Baylor in recognition of extraordinary classroom teaching over an extended period. He is an elected member of the American Law Institute and the American Bar Foundation. President Underwood was awarded the J.D. degree summa cum laude by the University of Illinois College of Law in 1985, where he graduated as class salutatorian and was an editor of the University of Illinois Law Review. Following graduation, he clerked for the Honorable Sam D. Johnson of the United States Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit, prior to practicing law for several years with a large law firm in Dallas. He also holds an undergraduate degree from Oklahoma Baptist University, where he met his spouse, Lesli. They have two children, Jessica and William

The Mercer Athletics Foundation was created in 2007 as the fundraising arm for Mercer University Athletics. Members of the Foundation annually set goals to raise funds which have been used to undertake such projects as hiring a full-time strength and conditioning coach, enhancing recruiting budgets, providing additional scholarships and to help increase salaries to attract and retain outstanding coaches. The MAF has many ways by which individuals and businesses alike can become involved and help keep the Bears’ athletics program at the forefront.
A Message from the Athletic Foundation President “As a former student-athlete and now as a Mercer alumna, I am excited about the future of the Mercer Athletics program. We are bringing to our campus some of the brightest and most talented student-athletes in the country. “As you can see, Mercer has had outstanding recent success, both in competition and in the classroom. Strength and Conditioning The strength and conditioning program at Mercer has three primary goals. These goals are to maximize athleticism, minimize injuries and increase mental/physical toughness. The way this is accomplished is by primarily utilizing ground based, multi-joint, triple extension, explosive exercises. Athletes will perform exercises of all types but focus is put on three main exercise styles: Olympic lifting, power lifting and plyometrics. The goal is to try and replicate the movements, velocities and forces that are experienced during competition of the athlete's sport. Served by a professional full-time strength and conditioning coach as well as an assistant coach, Mercer Athletics provides a full range of weight training and exercise equipment to assist Mercer’s approximately 226 student-athletes in reaching their athletic potential through strength training and conditioning. Easily accessible from anywhere in the University Center, the equipment includes the following: • three top of the line power lift full racks • over 3,000 pounds of plates • a line of variable resistant machines • three sets of Iron Grip dumbbells • five free standing adjustable benches
